The 4th generation Toyota Hybrid System in the corolla and prius is electronically limited to 117mph because of the max rpm rating of the traction motor. It would overspeed and damage the hybrid transaxle to spin the wheels faster than this, regardless of power, conditions, incline etc. You can hear the system lower the power to keep under speed at 9:21

For Everyone who is complaining about revs and noise, that’s because the way the car is driven in this vid. This is not the way a hybrid cvt should be driven at all. If you floor it all the time it will have the highest revs possible and of course will have more noise. At normal cruising speeds this car has pretty low revs and almost no engine noise at all and therefore also is very comfortable for driving long distances. Just do not floor it al the time!

It lacks the test at constant 120km / h to get an idea of normal conditions of use. Here you are just speeding up and making it seem like it's still noisy.

thanks for the video and test. I'm considering this car and was worried that it was underpowered and would struggle to get up to uk motorway speeds 70mph but judging from yor video it should handle motorway driving fairly easily despite having to go high on the revs

This car is not made for Highspeedracing. This video shows this. Well done and thanks for it. But however, the Toyota Corolla Hybrid is an amazig car. When you know how to drive it. Otherwise, there are many other cars for racing.

I have booked 2.0l hybrid in Germany. Main reason I have chose this car was the rapid acceleration and very good fuel economy. The big engines last longer so the Toyota. When I tried 1.4 turbo hybrids they lack the smoothness. The average speed I drive on autobahn is 140 to 150 kmph which is for the safe side. I go above 160 to over take only. It’s too stressful to keep driving at 200 Kmph as it requires immense amount of attention. I thought this car would be great for autobahn. All the above Toyota promises 10 years warranty.

Diesel is dying brothers in wheels, there's no doubt about it. Our only choice is petrol, hybrid, electric. The last one is still too expensive, slow to charge, with few charge ports available. Modern direct injection petrol with turbo is perfect, when new and above 1.5l minimum, however if you follow the news the EU wants to tax diesel, petrol, even more, around 40%. So if you're looking ahead, hybrid is the way to go. With Toyota (Corolla), yes the 2.0 is stronger, but it also consumes more for a bit more oomf, real numbers around 6.5l-7l/100km city driving, while 1.8 users report steady 4.5l-5l/100km, them 60 more horses don't come for free. In total the 1.8l HSD system has 210 NM of torque which is more than enough for normal driving, and considering the 10 year warranty, it's a deal. In 10 years we'll go full electric anyway. Until then, my opinion is you buy conventional vehicle now you risk getting nailed with fuel prices in 5 years max. I almost got a Mazda 3, but reverted back to the 1.8 HSD Corolla.

I got the same car , I hit 190 km/h , it wont go more than that .. consumption , 6.5l winter ( combined ) 5,2l summer . Nice car , quiet , economic , great design , but the tank is small ( 40 liters )

These are limited to 120mph , i have the 2.0VVTI with 177bhp , bit more performance than with the 1.8. The 2.0 also has paddle shifters but mated to a CVT gearbox they are a bit pointless. Off the line these hybrids use the electric motor and the petrol engine and quicker than any comparable diesel.

It is using electric motor anytime it needs (and when battery is charged enough). In lower speeds or when going with low torq need it can go on electric up to 100 km/h. Btw. driving a hybrid 150-180km/h on highway is not ideal. This car is not build for it. It si primarily made for cities and countryside roads.

I did not remove any speed limiter. This car was a rental and I therefore doubt the rental company spent any money for removing some limiters. Maybe there isn't any electronic limitation for the German market in the first place? EDIT: Ah, now I get your question. I don't know off the top of my head how to remove a speed limiter in a 20 Corolla Hybrid. I'd have to do some internet research.

Only thing I love about CVT and eCVT transmissions is that constant revving when flat out. Sounds so nice feels like the car is humming into my ears. Not like that regular automatic which changes gears and due to that sounds like someone having sex. It's not my fault that RPMs drop when it changes up.

This car is base on Prius 4. It is suposed to be the slowest car, wich it is clear is not. A lot of stupid people talk here about how bat the eCVT feels, about a shit car from '90 having a lower consumption at this speeds and so on. This is all stupid things from a very stupid people. This car, as shown in the video, could do 1000km of highway with adaptative cruise set at 140 km/h and a medium consumption of 5-5.3. Could a diesel be better? Doesn't matter, this car was designed to shine in a urban area... It is very comfotable, very economical and very easy to mantain. And very pleasing to drive. A lot more then previous Auris or Prius. The haters will be haters, no matter what...

@@FluppKey The low max speed is not because of the eCVT (not regular cvt), it's because the electric motor is limited and cannot spin faster. I guess Toyota didn't go for a more powerful electric motor for cooling and batteries weight/space issues. And yes the 2.0l version is a lot better. But still the max speed is limited for the same reason. But hey...not all the world lives next to an autobahn :)). On any other motorway a nice policemen will eventually take your license away if you're doing 180 kph.

@@AkritidesAK Yes but only two times. I live in Germany and I drive every week 200km to my Girlfriend on the Autobahn. There I have quite 2-5km straight where you can go as fast as you can. And at the end of the Straight the line goes quite 10% down for like 2km. So I ran with my Vmax of 160km/h to 190 km/h. But you feel the car is not made for. It's very loud and you think the engine could explode every second😂

I two words - damn slow. Acceleration is poor after 120kmh , you can hear only engine , how it useless uses power (5k rpm ) . It’s similar to Toyota Prius Alpha (aka Prius plus)

Das war bei Vollgas, da bringt der Hybridantrieb nicht viel. Bei konstanter Geschwindigkeit und in der Stadt beim Stop & Go zeigt der Hybrid seine Stärken.

Auf der Autobahn macht es keinen großen Unterschied aber auf der Landstraße und im Stadtverkehr schon, deshalb fahren auch so viele Uber und Taxis mit Hybridautos von Toyota.

Check your engines stats. This corolla is a whole new thing, starting from the engine. It's made from the scratch. Sorry to tell u that. Others Auris are 136hp not 122

@@sic22l probably. But not by a huge margin. Golfs use quieter timing belt which need replacement every five years while Toyota Corolla still use timing chains that outlast the engine life.

122 PS ist ja nur die Systemleistung. Ich glaube, dass bei höheren Geschwindigkeiten eigentlich nur noch die 100 PS des Benziners arbeiten.. Meine ich zumindest mal gehört zu haben. Kann aber auch falsch sein.

This car sucks at high speed. Which I got 70 It fells like 100 on my Land Rover evoque . When I go 90 I fells like 120 mph . It to light it shakes to much going high speed . I have 2020 version nonhybrids

This is a perfect way of driving, if you have a death wish, and want to take with you several other innocent people... Worst way of driving, ever, even for the sake of chronoing that damn thing. But ... for such a reckless way of driving, 9,2 l/km is a small price. For buttheads complaining that the cabin is noisy, remember that this is a car in 22-26k EURO segment, not a bloody Phaeton, Audi A6, BMW 5 either 7 series. It is a cheap car, a hybrid one, for people wanting to live more that this reckless driver. If something is happening at those speeds, neither a herd of angels can save you, nevermind car safety features.

I have driven American and European cars, including torque converter types, VAG group DSGs, an earlier Honda Jazz with CVT gearbox, as well as offering from Renault over several decades. The torque converter gearbox is rated by many as inefficient and certainly costs you in terms of mpg, the VAG Group’s much vaunted DSG gearbox has its critics and faults as I can vouch for having given had two Golf diesels and a 1.4 litre petrol Touran, each over three years. Driving both someone else’s car and now having taken delivery of my own Corolla 2.0 litre Sports Touring I disagree. The strength of this is easy relaxed urban driving with near diesel fuel consumption at petrol prices with, of course, zero emissions in stop-start driving conditions. It doesn’t remind me much of my three years with the Jazz’s CVT transmission that I wasn’t sold on either. However I am satisfied that when I do need to shift it, for example joining traffic at a busy motorway junction or needing to overtake the 2 litre provides ample acceleration for safe overtaking.

Automatic transmission and CVT is still rough, noisy and less effective than a good torque converter etc. Very small instrument panel and digital display not customizable and with quite old-fashioned technology, here if you should take note of Mercedes Benz, and change that box instruments for something more cheerful and configurable, the taillights in that horrible color plastic glass color not only look worse especially during the day and also give a much better inferior car image the taillights in amber red color, some Japanese manufacturers have that stupid and absurd mania of abusing the transparent plastic glass color in the taillights etc, luckily the front bumper has the front fog optics installed, something that many brands ignore and prefer to put cheap plastic holes and false air outlets not even precious ones led daytime running lights on the front skirt, brands like mercedes benz audi etc They prefer to save on quality and safety and instead of mounting the front fog lights they abuse the plastic grilles holes etc and that is nothing positive, fewer patches and more quality etc, the Corolla should be a little more attractive and with a more aggressive design and Different. and the usual in toyota lexus hybrids, the automatic transmission is not up to the performance and power of the engine, the day they solve this problem and improve the quality of the batteries, few brands will overshadow it, etc. Nothing bad could be more cheerful body colors, orange green yellows, and more quality etc ,,

More reliable by far than Mercedes for a start, and a number of other luxury makes according to Which?. Hybrids are not efficient at high speed, this is a car for driving in urban areas. In the 2 litre acoustic glass reduces that noise. I note to that one of the reviewers from Two Chaps has after considerable research bought a 2 litre Estate/Station Wagon Excel and is very happy with it. A lot less money too than a Mercedes.

OMG that dashboard looks terrible,so many lines and sharp edges,just why? And the screen that pops out from dash is very ugly. Performance is very bad,i sure know that Toyota does not make cars for autobahns but still. Well this is another good reminder that Toyota makes boring cars for grannys
