A self recovery in White Hills Beach using only the Toyota FJ Cruiser A-Trac system.
First, I bogged the rear tyres by driving on soft sand on 4x2, then switched to 4x4 and sank the front tyres till the car is fully bellied out. Tyre pressure was 12psi both front and rear.
I then switched to 4 low, enabled the FJ Cruiser A-trac system, accelerate at a constant slow speed while continuously turning the steering wheel both sides and the FJ Cruiser just drove out of the bog situation without any external help.
Tried the self recovery several times and noticed that it works under the following conditions:
1. When turning the steering wheel both sides
2. The correct tyre pressure - Mine works at any tyre pressure below 12 psi (Tyre pressure will depend on sand condition, tyre types etc)

Why is this truck so good? I love it so much! I can just stand and stare at my one for hours. Can get behind the wheel and drive nowhere just enjoying the process of driving it. There's no way modern cars can give you that

You've nailed it! That's exactly the kind of passion FJ owners have. They're just FUN. It's that classic look, the rugged capability, and that feeling of freedom they give you. It's more than a car, it's an adventure buddy. I completely understand wanting to just cruise around and enjoy the drive - it's a feeling that's hard to match! 🙌

This is where crawl control is actually very handy. Works a treat

Yes crawl control will definitely make the job a lot easier as we can maintain a constant low speed but my FJ don't have this option, so unfortunately I need to do without it..

This is good to see. Thanks for taking time to do the demo. My 4runner has just A-trac, and I've often wondered if it could work as a poor man's crawl control by using a light touch on the throttle. Now I know.

You must, it's a lot of fun and excitement. Don't forget, correct tyre pressure, speed, turning both sides and A-Trac is important.

This only works for humid almost wet sand. In case of very dry sand like in Sahara it gets you moving closer to the center of the earth .
@Laval1
@Laval1 Год назад
Can't say if it will work in very dry sand in the Sahara. Generally when I drive on sand, the drier or softer it is, the lower tyre pressure I go. One time I even needed to lower the tyre pressure to 5 psi for the self recovery to work but after the recovery I aired up to 10 psi before continuing my route. Try it one day with very low tyre pressure and let us know if it works but bring someone with you to recover you in case you get stuck.

This has been my experience as well. The transmission overheats and it never pulls out before gaining traction.

Its critical to have some moist sand underneath, otherwise this will never work.

We use crawl control here in the middle east , comes on the 2016+ i think or 15 , digs the car out from some serious stuff let me tell yeah 😂

Was that using crawl control? What type size and pressure? Awesome work
@Laval1
@Laval1 2 года назад
By using A-trac only. Tyre pressure was 12psi both front and rear when I bellied out the FJ. I then switched to 4 low, enabled the FJ Cruiser A-trac system, accelerate at a constant slow speed while continuously turning the steering wheel both sides and the FJ Cruiser just drove out of the bog situation without any external help. Be mindful that A-trac works only at a maximum speed of 6 kph, above that it will disable. Tried the self recovery several times and noticed that it works under the following conditions: 1. When turning the steering wheel both sides 2. The correct tyre pressure - Mine works at any tyre pressure below 12 psi (Tyre pressure will depend on sand condition, tyre types etc)
