We review the new 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander to discuss the pros and cons of making a family SUV safe and easy to use. We talk about the good and bad of usability, storage ride quality, and what is the right formula. Others to consider are the Honda Pilot, Kia Telluride, Mazda CX90, and Buick Enclave.

Enjoyed your review. Unconsciously, people really, really want minivans. They just don't think they do due to image insecurities and vanity. You are right. The Grand Highlander is basically a minivan made to look like a SUV. That's why you can't buy one because the demand is through the roof. On the other hand, big SUVs are today's minivans so that's why the most insecure reject these too and now buy giant 4 WD pickups with tiny beds to commute to their office jobs.

Indeed. Such small details are hard to notice (feels a bit uncomfortable at test drive, but can't figure out why). I got rid of my Opel minivan mostly because of seats. Some "genius" at GM had an idea to put tiny seats in a big minivan. Caused massive butt and back pain after a while, eventually made it impossible to drive that car. Got Forester instead and now I again can drive for hours in comfort. It is a bit smaller, has less storage space, but it is so comfortable. Driving it on gravel roads too, which I used to avoid.

There is one thing that reviewers always get wrong, in my opinion. It's the constant complaining that SUVs need to have some sort of firm sports suspension for some reason. That might be cool when you have a press vehicle for a week, but then you own the car for years it gets really tiresome really fast. I own a CX9, and the one thing i hate about it is its stiff suspension, to the point where it will be a major point on consideration for my next vehicle to have something softer. I will sacrifice the 10% of the time i want a sporty feel for the 90% where i want a softer comfortable ride

I’ve owned several iterations of both the Highlander and Sienna. The Sienna by far has superior room and better driving manners on highway where it spent most of its time. If you’ve got kids or dogs, the Sienna’s big sliding door is better for easy entry. Storage is better in Sienna too. Yes,it’s a minivan, but it’s better than a Highlander.

It looks more like a really large RAV 4 than a Highlander, IMO. Interior is standard Toyota. Mostly good. I like the RAV 4 ride better than the Highlander because the Highlander is more floaty so this car would be more floaty than the Highlander. Still, the ride quality of Toyotas in terms of impact harshness is superb. Ride motions are more felt in the crossovers than the sedans. This vehicle likely to sell quite well for Toyota.

To be fair, it honestly looks more like a super-sized 2022 Toyota Avanza, an MPV/Minivan that is sold mainly in Asia. Try go look it up. It has a similar kind of front fascia, similar stance and overall side profile, same 7 seat configuration, pretty much the design is similar to the Grand Highlander but in smaller form.

You comment about just getting a minivan is spot on. Save money save tons of gas money. There is zero benefit to getting a large SUV to haul people that has a high entry cost and a higher fuel cost for the life of the vehicle. We are out of the minivan stage, but back in 2008 we thought about a Honda Pilot for our five member family, but once we saw the Honda Odyssey and how much better it was as a people hauler plus how much better mpg it got, it was a no brainer. Ironically, I still have that van and two of my kiddos are learning to drive on it.

just bought GH hybrid limited. price/quality is so great, i can not ask for more. it has all the modern bells and whistles you can think of. 360 camera, active cruise control(which works amazingly well), ventilated/heated seats, wireless apple play, upgraded sound system.. i loaded it full with my buddies, 6 adult men were sitting perfectly fine, in all raws. and the trunk was full of food and beer. i personally do hit highway daily, avrg mpg is 33.3… thats your small sedan mpg on car size of a mountain. the only downside is lack of power, its 4 cylinders plus hybrid, but thats your trade off for good mpg. you want it be faster, buy hybrid max.. i personally don’t like to have turbine in my car, so im fine with it to a bit less powerful but less gas hungry on gas in return.

As always, great video as pertaining to the breakdown of the actual car. I take one small exception with the cringey jokes about having a family and actually needing a car this size - I am THE GUY you guys were poking fun at. I have 5 kids, ages 15 to 23, so only a couple are still at home. But this would have been the exact car I would have wanted when we needed a vehicle big enough to haul everyone in comfort. We never made the jump to a full-size SUV because a minivan was 10x more practical and a mid-size SUV was too small, but we always knew we'd look cooler in a SUV and life would be infinitely more interesting with some light off-road capability. But having a family, next to marrying the right person (which I did) was the single best decision of my life. Nothing has made me happier. These days my wife is driving a 2020 F150 Platinum which she loves and is the perfect car for hauling her ski's and snowboards + a couple kids and friends up into the UT mountains without having to worry about getting stuck. I have a Tesla, '22 M3P. My youngest is currently learning to drive and she wants a car with a manual transmission (did I do something right?). My son did laps around SpeedVegas in a GT500 and a 911 GT3RS for a graduation trip and I watched with tears in my eyes as he passed a timid Huracan driver. See? It can actually be fun. My kids all love or at least appreciate cars (my oldest daughter bought her own '22 Elantra N 8DCT a little over a year ago, her twin recently went for a '24 Outback Touring, we're still working on her haha), and we have the best times getting together on the weekends for BBQ's, the dog park, skiing, hiking, camping, etc. When the kids were younger we took them to the drag races whenever we could until they closed them down several years ago, unfortunately, but those were some of the best times together and they still talk about how fun it was. I'm sure the joking is somewhat in jest but I wanted to chime in with my .02 anyway, because I seriously don't get all the negativity around marriage and family and wanted to give my perspective. We've invested a lot in our kids and it's been amazing. I regret nothing. Peace ✌

Personally, I like my 2023 Honda Odyssey Elite. It has a 'sporty' ride, is very maneuverable, gets an honest 28 mpg, has manual controls for HVAC, decent tunes, and supportive seats. In the minivan segment, most give you chair-like seating in the front two rows which is important for sitting on long hauls. Ingress/egress is great. I just turn my ass towards the seat, plop down, and swing my legs in. There's plenty of room for us. If I needs more space, I find a contractor with a pickup.

Solid product, just seems like it could be greatly improved by being a couple inches lower, and replacing the traditional rear doors with some kind of doors on perhaps a sliding mechanism for superior ingress/egress, especially when you have to buckle in kids in a tight parking lot stall. If someone were to make a vehicle like that, that perhaps got a 36/36/36 EPA mpg rating, I think tons of people would love it, as long as they didn't let some kind of moronic imagined social stigma stop them from choosing it.

That his videos aren't sterile-scripted is the salt in the soup. It is a worthy price for speaking long segments kinda freely. His statement there reminded me of that one time when an avian aficionado said "Birds are like angels with wings".

So true about the Enclave interior. I sat in the latest generation a few years ago as it was styled nicely outside and I had carryover good feelings about Buicks from my past, albeit a very distant past. I couldn't wait to get out of it. How it might drive was irrelevant. If unspecial is a word, that interior was the definition of it.

Mark, I appreciate your rebuttal to Jack. It echoes what I have to think about right now. Of course I'd like to go back to my 20s and make better decisions but alas I'm here and this may be the vehicle that fits. Jack, you helped stay true to the spirit of the channel while reviewing a family hauler. I appreciate you both!

We got ours sept 1st. It’s great for our family that constantly changes from 5-8. Outgrew the ‘16 Highlander. And, we still tow a 4000 lb trailer and commute 1000km per week. Meets all our needs, including the ability to get the canoes to rough gravel road locations. It handles better than the old HL that’s for sure.

@@gosman949 because choosing to pay more now to get what you want now while demand remains high and supply is low (artificially or otherwise) makes someone foolish? Some people just don't care about that as much as others. You obviously value money over time... many of us find time way more valuable than money. I will gladly throw away an extra $5k or so to get something I want now instead of waiting a couple years to see if demand/supply trade places. Tomorrow isn't guaranteed.

Love all the physical controls on the grand highlander, especially the ac. Are they going to bring this design to the regular highlander? I have a 2020 limited highlander and hate how heat and cool buttons are in infotainment system. That’s my biggest gripe.

Wow, I am impressed. Not just one or two token s bombs but four! Also, I enjoy most of your videos and especially admire the video production values. Many of your videos, as well, possess a brilliant post modern artistic twist. Agreed that Toyota has the best hybrid technology with Honda maybe a close second. Really, though, if you max out a Sienna minivan, hybrid with AWD then you’re definitely at or above the 50k mark. If you need a large SUV, then a lot of your options get like 14-15 MPG city costing 150 dollars plus to fill up. I have not seen too many grand Highlanders, however, a work colleague had a regular Highlander hybrid which is a really beautiful car. Then there’s the Telluride which seems to give you a lot of car for its price, although I wouldn’t want to be stuck with one after 7-10 years.

Is your gas $6/gal? Our 2nd gen Sequoia does only get 14-15 mpg city but to fill the 26 gal tank it costs me about $80 where I live.

Great video. Sure we think its boring, but they did a bang up job on this and it replaces what the Traverse and Enclave were and improves the formula. Going to recommend this to my sister when she replaces her Enclave and wants to keep something for 10 years. PS: Car reviewers always say buy a minivan instead, but when it comes down to it none of them do. Stop recommending minivans!

Great review guys. Ultimately I think this is a luxury minivan. If you need to tow: Sequoia for $60k. If you don't need to tow: Sienna for $36k. I suppose this thing is a middle ground at $44k but it's really only for those that want the utility of a minivan but want to look like they're driving a truck/SUV (that can't tow).

I rented cars for a couple years rode 7 seaters and the enclave was a really nice ride! The woman at the rental said they were hands down loved by those renting in my same class. I agree, it was awesome. 2019-2021 it was the most luxurious ride. Felt like a Mercedes without the muscle.

great review as always, I wanted GH initially but due to high dealer unreasonable markups in my area, I ended up choosing the Mazda CX 90, The compromise on a few cubic feet of space will be easily outweighed by the I6 performance. And yes, no motion sickness for my kids with the CX 90. Keep up the good work and looking forward to your future reviews.
