CAT V8s are legendary. I've driven a K900 with a 3408, about 5 mpg, but no hill is too steep and no load is too heavy. Over 600hp out of the box. I met another driver that said he drove a Pete with a 3208 that was better on fuel at 9.5 mpg and he said that if you were able to be in the right gear, it pulled really nice. Can't imagine an engine that big in a Landcruiser, I bet if you sneeze it breaks the tires loose.

Well, my experience with the 3208 is that it was very reliable in the naturally aspirated form. With only 210 horsepower it lived a long time pulling big loads. The single f9000 axle broke eventually from those loads. And there was a day when we replaced the spicer 5 speed transmission with a fuller rto6610. That day, the OM366T mercedes benz trucks stopped laughing at this engine. Now for the land cruiser, the 3208 weighs over 1600lbs. That can't be good for the axles, bearings, differential, and handling. Just imagine going from a hard left to a hard right, the engine will want to keep going left. Anyway, it's cool for the gentleman or lady who built it but it is not for anybody.

The 3208 has its share of people who don’t like it... lots of them are Cummins fanboys whose only experiences are in Dodge pickups. Occasionally you’ll get someone with enough Caterpillar experience to have an intelligent conversation about them.

Might only have 200hp but they are torque kings at 900 to 1000lbs there is alot you can do to reduce weight on that engine custom headers aluminum intake etc.. might be a parent bore engine but still good for 1million miles plus

Only reason it is hated is because it doesn't have cylinder liners has to be done in a machine shop got one in my dump truck 900k on it and highift 23years service has out lasted my cummins been great engine I've only had to change 1 turbo and fluids...

Tim I need you follow up story on lifting Toyota Tundra blowing rack & pinion out. Toyota want blaming lift or fail equipment?

Hmm... I feel like I’ve done this story before. Many manufacturers don’t really stand behind their product when you lift it or modify it a lot beyond stock. You will also find dealers who are reluctant to do warranty work since it involves non-Toyota parts. I’m assuming you have or have someone you know with an issue. Good luck to you/them. I can’t really help.

Yes. But I have one in a hydraulic crawler excavator. Works good powering a hydraulic pump. A cat 225blc excavator. I guess a hydraulic pump turning fluid with a propeller in a pump is similar to a prop turning water! Reliable. Never had an issue. Had one in a dump truck. Turbo version. Did ok. But had no engine brake. Had a tick for a day or so and thought it was exhaust leak…no….slung a rod through block coming off a big mountain overloaded holding back in gear!
