DIY video! Performing an Automatic Transmission service on my 1994 Toyota Land Cruiser 80 Series with the A442F transmission. Procedure may also work on a A343F Automatic transmissions, but always reference the Toyota FSM. Cheers!

Excellent video! I need to drop the pan on my A442F equipped HDJ81 when I do the next ATF change. I have done an ATF change, no flush. Very informative. Saved for reference.

I am blown away by the quality of your work! That level of conscientiousness and detail to care for something you love and proud to work on. If only garages had the same mentality working on customers cars, then I personally would feel the fear of taking my proud possessions with fear of not being worked on like this. Thank you for the inspiration, I actually chose an 80 series knowing there is passionate people like yourself out there to guide and help me do the work myself. Gratitude from Melbourne, Australia 🏆

that heat shrink, is that on every 80 series?
@trackcalledquest

No it is not. Their is an “O” ring which is suppose to seal the two tubes. But I noticed it’s not much of use. I added the shrink tube for extra reassurance, water crossings are no joke. Cheers!

The beginning of the video had me thinking you pulled the tranny to change the fluid 😜. When was the last time you changed it? I have over 280K and I bet mine has never been changed. I'm always leary of messing with automatic transmissions. It seems they always F up after. haha

First fluid change since the rebuild and that was right around 3500miles ago. If you haven't change your fluid then you might want to run a Magnefine transmission filter they are top notch. Cheers

Will it mess mine up if it’s never been changed? Little bit skeptical to mess with my trans but I feel as if I should. I Ordered the parts from Toyota to do a full service just like you did. Is it safe ?

If I were you I would proceed. When I first got my Land Cruiser I was real nervous about changing out my automatic transmission fluid, because of all the myths of ruining the transmission. Either way damn if you do or don’t sooner or later it will fail if you don’t service it. The fluid that I drained was so dirty. But I was so glad I did do it the truck ran like a champ ever since then.

@TRACKCALLEDQUEST In your opinion is the A442F a superior transmission compared to a A343F? I am in the market for a land cruiser 93-97 and somehow came across your video. Thank you for your content.

@@nsh040909 the A442F & A343 are both great transmissions. But I’ve read that the A442F is a really robust heavy duty transmission that Toyota went to for most of their manufactured fleet vehicles, which were offered with either a A442F automatic transmission or the manual transmission. The emissions regulations had a big impact on introducing the A343 here in the state’s. Cheers

Quick note when I did my ATF change……make sure you keep track of how much fluid is drained out. You do not want to over fill! I had to siphon about 1 quart out due to overfill.
