TOYOTA LAND CRUISER TIMING BELT FAILURE! ENGINE DESTROYED? 😭😭😭😭

Toyota Land Cruiser broken timing belt and water pump is the worst thing any Land Cruiser owner wants to experience.
My 1999 Toyota Land Cruiser 100 developed a very small and difficult to locate coolant leak, this leak lead to a catastrophic mechanical failure!
Luckily my Land Cruiser survived, but questions still remain.
Is the 2UZ-FE an interference or non interference engine?
What happens when your Land Cruiser Timing belt breaks?
Are the 2UZ-FE VVT motors better than the non VVT ?
Is the 2UZ-FE true greatest engine ever made?
Every one thought my engine was destroyed, intact she lived to see another day!

Just watched Peter on "Toyota Maintenance" this week with a failed Lexus with 2UZ and broken timing belt and it too survived, he installed a new belt and engine started and ran fine. So, apparently the 2UZ is NOT an interference engine.

I have an 05 Tundra w the same engine & 180k on it. I changed my timing belt, water pump and serpentine belt in my driveway over a weekend for less than $400, including miscellaneous supplies & tools. Parts were from Aisin and meet OEM specs.

Fingers and toes crossed hopefully it does! While they got it apart I would recommend swapping all the hoses and serpentine belts. I wanted mine done but the shop didn’t do it for what ever reason.

@@KRTLyfe the new timing belt did the trick! It had jumped timing and that’s why it wouldn’t start. We did the serpentine and a few other things while we were in there. Runs like new now 💪🏼

Certain things on my vehicle, I will do myself, but when my timing belt and water pump needed to be replaced, i took it to the dealership. It was costly, but I was confident after leaving the dealership, that my vehicle was properly serviced. Having said that, i checked all the hoses, clamps, and screws to make sure they were tight. BTW, I will be deleting my air ride suspension when it starts to fail! Oh, my wife drives a 2008 GX470. Great video

Great video! Fortunately, the 2UZ-FE engine isn't an interference engine and the timing belt exploding won't cause any internal damage. They also tend to last much longer than the factory suggests replacement, but having said that I just replaced mine for the second time at 200,000 miles, so I'm definately good for awhile. I also had a serpentine belt go and discovered that the belt tensioner had completely seized. This put a lot of strain on the harmonic balancer (crankshaft pulley) and caused the rubber damping material between the inner and outer ring to weaken, something I didn't find out until after I had completed the rest of the job and drove the truck for about a 150 miles. The pulley then completely failed and the grenading serpentine belt took out the camshaft position sensor harness along the way. Lesson learned! Inspect, Inspect, Inspect!!! Again, great job on the videos and keep 'em coming.

Non vvti engine FTW! My 02 belt broke while driving last January. Dash lights came on the engine shut off, had it towed and got it repaired with OE parts in a few days. Assumed it was changed by 108K when I got it, failure was at 203K when I was actually getting parts for a TB job coincidentally. Lesson learned

Awesome, glad your LC survived this failure as well! For some reason there is a lot of confusion and conflicting information about this. Every shop I called said my engine was toast before even looking into it.

Awesome that you lucked out. Your right, more attention to detail should have given to the job they did, they should have ran it for 15 or 20 minutes to check for leaks, not to mention the other things they forgot. 1300$ for that job sounds pretty cheap. I just did mine on a 2004 Sequoia, the kit was 180$ for the Aisin, serpentine belt and the idler pullies was over a 100$ and the cooling fan support bracket was 150$. Its not a hard job, just time consuming. I am sure next time you will do it yourself, make sure you get the tool for holding the crankshaft pully from ebay before you do and take photos as you go as well as bag and tag the bolts. Get pretty confusing trying to figure out what screws and bolts go where.

I did my timing belt job and it was a big learning step for me, but even though I had some issues, I know in the end it was done properly. I've been burned too many times. Hopefully, yours is all good and no issues. This is my video of my the ups and downs of doing my timing job on my 100 series. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oiNuzEdlYT4.html

First let me say GREAT video! I know how hard it is to do a major job like this and film it… over the course of several days and then another few days to edit it and do your day job😂. Wow man you knocked this one off the park! Broken screws, missing screws, specialty tools, but you still got the job done! I don’t even think my torque wrench goes up to 180ftlbs LOL. The great thing is you know it is done right, mine on the other hand… I have very low confidence that mine is done as well as I would have done it. There are a few parts I would have replaced that the shop didn’t replace on mine. I have to ask you how many days/ hours did you put into the job alone minus filming and editing? Thanks for sharing your video!
@TheNonnell
@TheNonnell Год назад
@@KRTLyfe thanks! I appreciate it. I would say a solid 3-4 days. Obviously, some setbacks and waiting on parts made it longer, but it’s a very doable job. By the time it was said and done I could take everything apart that I needed to do the timing job and put it back together within 5 hours(because I had to go in and out several times). When I do this job again, I am confident it will take me less than a day. Also, I’m not a mechanic, obviously, so having someone with mechanical experience would be very beneficial.

You are right on to be frustrated that the job wasn’t done correctly. Why did USAA fight you on towing the car, was it because it didn’t die while you were stranded on a trip?
@KRTLyfe
@KRTLyfe Год назад
They didn’t fight me on the tow however, it took forever for a tow truck to arrive they rescheduled the tow truck 5 times it took 7 hours until a truck finally arrived. The worst part was, they recommended I park the vehicle on the street with the key in it and go about my day… I was like okay so my insurance company is telling me to leave my vehicle on the road unattended… with the key in it ??? WTF

You can call a Toyota dealership and tell them what engine you have or give them your Vin number and they will tell you yes or no if it is an interference

@@KRTLyfe Not trying to be smart but how can you give that assurance? Do you have any information from Toyota that states that for a fact? I like you have been looking all over and the Car Care Nut, and heaps of people on Mud have said definitely it is an interference engine.....THEN....there are just as many who say it is a non-interference. Like I said not trying to be smart, just wondering if you have stumbled on some information that I have missed other than your own story and i assume other stories as well. I am fully aware there have been documented cases of TB failures that have not resulted in engine failure, but as of yet it's still a probably a 70/30 split in favour of the 2uz being an interference engine. At least that's where I put it from my own exhausting searches on this topic. Cheers mate and i hope she gets to the million forya!

Honestly, I can’t say definitely in everyone’s situation globally that they will have the same results as my 100. However what seems to be the case as far as models shipped to the US the older 100s appear to be non interface. I don’t know what vin numbers correlate to what engine etc. That might be a great project for someone with more free time than I. All I can say is do your TB early and mitigate the risk as best you can. Like I said in the video, I thought I had at least another 30-40k before mine needed to be done. Unfortunately the belt was fine it was the WP that caused the failure. Best of luck to you and I sincerely appreciate the question!
