@Da1Apprentice
@Da1Apprentice 5 лет назад
@@Jimmieadamsp I do not think that is the reason. There is not enough demand for it in the US. Even if otherwise, Jeep/Fiat/Chrysler would not allow it as there is the Wrangler already. Is it a coincidence that the US does not even have a Suzuki Jimmy? How about the boxy LR Defender? I am from Haiti, and I can assure you that you will not find any of these cars in junkyards for they do not break down. In terms of a crash, I would rather find myself in any of the above-mentioned cars than any other ones that are available in the US. This is to say, once more, I do not think safety is an issue. Lived and worked overseas for 10 years (Civilian DOD Pilot), these awesome Japanese designed, Japanese engineered, Japanese built vehicles were indestructible and sold everywhere worldwide, except the USA of course. Even a lot of foreign Military branches have these as their vehicles, built tough and built to last and reliable as all Hell. Thanks to LBJ and that friggan chicken tax (25% tax / tariff on foreign trucks) plus the fact that here in the USA we're stuck with American designed / built Toyotas, we'll never see these here again like we did back in the 60s and 70s. You CAN order the Top of the Line Land Cruiser still but not these rough and tumble ones. Even the FJ Cruiser was still being built up to 2018 but they stop sending and selling them in the USA in 2016. One of the reasons I'll never part with mine. So, we'll never have these babies but if you look closely at the VIN numbers on Toyotas in the dealerships, you can see a few with a VIN number that starts with a "J" and a sticker that says, made in Japan. Good news is the 4Runner is made in Japan (for now) but still not as cool and tough as this model above. As far as safety goes, I had one of these in the Middle East and was rear ended by an American made Nissan Titan. The Titan was totaled, the front end was pushed all the way into the engine compartment and my vehicle had a dented hatch and bumper, heck, the rear hatch door still worked. Got it fixed and was a happy unit! One thing I miss about being overseas, besides eating food with no chemicals in it, it the abundance of vehicles with distinct personalities instead of the cookie cutter jelly bean wanna be vehicles here. Sure, BIG BIG BIG engines and HP but the quality and fit and finish will never be up to par. In my own opinion that is. Love what you drive, drive what you love I always say.

Correction: That is NOT a snorkel, that is a cyclonic air filter. As it sucks in air, it cycles around the top, throwing any dust to the sides and allowing clean air to flow to the engine. Unlike a snorkel, it is not watertight, and it will ingest water if it is submerged. However, someone driving it in a dry, dusty environment, such as a mine, will be better off with this over a traditional snorkel. If you want a proper snorkel, it has to be fitted aftermarket. Interior buttons guide: Left of steering wheel: Traction control off, demister, radio antenna raise and lower. Right of steering wheel top: Hand throttle, increases idle speed. Right bottom: Manual Diesel Particulate Filter switch. This is a emissions control device that captures carcinogenic soot particles, that must be burned off, that normally happens around highway speeds. If you are not driving at highway speeds, it cannot burn the particulate matter off and if left too long, it will clog the filter and enjoy your several thousand dollar repair bill. So after a while of no highway travel, or stop-start traffic, or short trips, it'll automatically start a burn by using a little extra fuel to raise the exhaust temperature, which burns it off. But if this happens in a remote area in, say, dry bushland, it creates a major fire hazard. So you use this button to start the burn early and prevent clog filter or a bushfire. There's a little warning label on the driver's door detailing this better. All the rest are blank switches. Some versions may have factory features that will use them, but otherwise they're great to have to allow aftermarket electronics to have buttons in easy reach without drilling into the dash.

I had a LJ 78 in 1996 for about 4 years they look just like this I think they are basically the same vehicle it looks like it hasn’t changed very much at all they are basic like this because they can take lots of abuse and still go on. The newer 4x4s are full of electronics and just give you lots of hassle plus you can’t do much with them when they go wrong in the middle of nowhere with these you can still get going with a basic tool kit. Very nice vehicle and very reliable.

The 70 series was introduced in the early 1984 as the workhorse successor to the dated 40 series. The larger 60 series was introduced four years earlier. In subsequent years, the successors to both the 70 and 60 series increasingly came to emphasize comfort with the huge popularity of 4WD vehicles in the 90s. Toyota replaced leaf springs with coil springs and introduced independent suspension up front among other things. The 70 series became the basis for the Prado and the Lexus GX. The larger 60 series became the iconic 80 series, the 100 series and today's Land Cruiser 200 and the Lexus LX. During this whole time, however, the 70 series continued to live on in some parts of the world as the no nonsense workhorse utility truck, manual hub locks et al. More recently, it appears the 70 series has found a new following among aficiandos in developed countries who find "luxurious" and dumb-downed "SUVs" as paradoxical. - Tim

My 200 series is used other than for the highway. I enjoy its 5.7 liter engine. Emission requirements would hamper this 70 series performance. Although my 200 series has lots of bells and whistles it is a formidable rig off road. I am truly pleased with my purchase. Cheers!

My guess is that the main purpose of the snorkel is to reduce the amount of dust drawn into the air filters. I understand that these vehicles are commonly used in the mining industry in Australia and so would be driven on dusty roads frequently. Especially when they are driven behind another vehicle that is kicking up a lot of dust, the snorkel, being up high, would cut down substantially on the amount of dust that the air filters need to deal with. There is also what appears to be some kind of dust separator on top of the snorkel. This is a work vehicle. Nothing fancy about it at all. Built for heavy usage in harsh conditions and reliability. I wish I had one.

Snorkel also helps with dust as well, get you cleaner air and cooler air up top.

The factory Toyota snorkel is no good for water crossings. It's inadequately sealed against water ingress. For dusty roads or bulldust, it's barely adequate. It's pretty much a given here in Australia that if you're gonna be doing serious offroading with deep creek crossings and notorious bulldust filled tracks, you'll have to get rid of the factory snorkel and put in an aftermarket, reputable branded snorkel e.g. Safari. Also a good idea to silicone the airbox joins in order fully dust and waterproof it.

@@eaglen00b Thank you for that note. I wasn't referring to that exact snorkel but snorkel in general. But am pretty surprised Toyota engineers made the snorkel that unusable. And yes, I live in the US and I actually purchased the ARB Safari for my 4runner and I can't complain. Happy trails! =)

@Dave D That's good to hear Dave, phew~. I'm pretty sure Toyota Engineers know what they are doing. Unfortunately my 4runner does not come with stock snorkel so I purchased the after market product. Happy trails Dave! =)

Land Cruiser 70 series vehicles are legendary, which is an overused term in many contexts. However, in the case of the Land Cruiser 70 series, the usage of the term is perfectly justifiable. 30 years after its introduction, the Land Cruiser 70 series can still lay claim to being the most durable, most dependable vehicle capable of withstanding the roughest circumstances and the most difficult scenarios that life can throw at it.

I have a 1995 HZJ75RV from new. It's done an extremely reliable 470,000km on the original factory 1HZ normally aspirated straight six diesel. Still the original driveline and radiator. Still fires up at the first crank (unless battery is on its way out). Fuel consumption is around 11.9 L/100 km, which by today's standards is pretty thirsty of course. But EVERYTHING still works like the day drove it brand new off the dealer's lot. With any luck, I won't need to even consider a rebuild of the engine until 750,000kms or later. This thing is heavy AF but geez it's solid. Seats 10 people including driver. I've moved sofas, beds, fridges, gym sets, paving bricks etc. The amount of room you get when you fold and lift up the middle row of seats and the two side rows of seats is unbelievable. It just opens up to be a huge cavernous square useable cargo area. I've slept outstretched in the back on camping trips with great comfort and space. It is an incredibly versatile and capable vehicle. With twin 90L tanks on board, I can safely do at least 1,300km from the 180L or so on board. It's not a rocket, but will happily do 100km/h all day without an issue. Gearing is a bit high though. 100km/h in 5th is about 2400rpm and the engine redlines at 4000 rpm.

5-speed manual is the golden part of these vehicle. And here is my story about these cruisers: Although I have no experiences with the 70 series, I do have a close relative who owns an `99 ver 100 series with 5 speed mt in China. That thing, ofmg that thing, drives like a literal blast, I absolutely loves it. The name 'land cruiser' make sense because it DON`T GIVE A FUCK about what kind of ground surface below and just runs like nothing. I am actually a lightweight sports car person who usually into miata and lotus, but this big boi gave me a totally different kind of joy. That relative of mine was almost about to get rid of it because he think it`s too old, but I told him how rare a manual with only 50k kliometers is, and he has changed his mind. I think I will buy that vehicle from him later when I got my money up because it`s gonna be nearly impossible to find another one of these in China again!
