This video covers the installation of the hewitt-tech.com exhaust block off plates for all of our Secondary Air Injection System Bypass Kits. These are the same block off plates used for all Toyota and Lexus 5.7L vehicles, the Tundra, Sequoia, Landcruiser and LX570.
These are an integral part of all of our SAIS Kits, currently our V36, V54 and newly released Gen-II kits. These plates fit all years of 5.7L from 2007-2019 (current model year).
The air switching valves for the 5.7L vehicles are still currently behind the engine/intake manifold so we install the block off plates at the exhaust manifold air tube flanges. You will see in the video the easiest way to access this location is to remove the front wheels and go through the fender.
The block off plates are needed with the bypass kit to prevent the air switching valves from leaking exhaust and causing valve stuck open codes. Regardless of which bypass kit you are using from us it is recommended to always install them so you don't have to worry about it later or misplace them if you need them later.
You can find all of our bypass kits at Hewitt-tech.com as well as PDF copies of the installation instructions that come with the kits.
If you have any questions or would like to order, please give us a call Toll-Free 844-307-7671 or email us @ support@hewitt-tech.com You can find all of our products and more information at hewitt-tech.com

This was done on my 08 5.7 Tundra. 190k miles The passenger side went in relatively easily using a wooden stick to hold open for the plate to slide in. However, the driver's side was impossibly hard. I was at it 3-4 hrs before giving in for the day. Finally got it in the next day after much blood and sweat. Having a decent light helps. What worked for me was I wedged a small flathead screwdriver in the gap when pushing on the wooden stick, to the left of where you slide the plate in. Then using the leverage of the screwdriver to pry open the gap just a little more. The plates are a very tight fit. After all the effort yesterday I even thought of how to shave a mm off to get it to fit. The plates are 1/8" - 3.175mm thick. It did smoke after I fired up to check for leaks, but that was the bucket load of pb blaster burning off.. :) This would be easier with two people like others have mentioned, but that was a bear of a job. The Gen II SAIS works like a charm though. No more P2442 and limp mode.. Cheers

Hey A L, I am glad you were able to get it all installed and its all working as it should even though you had some trouble with the plates. Unfortunately, the job to get the plates is simply what it is and there certainly seems to be some variation in difficulty vehicle to vehicle. Good Job. If we can help with anything else just let us know. Paul

Not gonna lie, I struggled a little with these. Actually didn’t get them the first day, had to come back a second day with fresh ideas. Wouldn’t have been able to do it without a second set of hands too. I held strong pressure against the bolts with a long broom handle. We also had it on a lift, but the second set of hands using pressure should work on ground too. This allowed us to finally get enough gap for my friend to slide them in while I held pressure.

Just got done installing on my 2010 5.7 tundra. Thanks you so much for the detailed tutorial and the product in general. I struggled with the installl, in particular the block off plates. I ended up using a full length broom stick on the one nut and ratchet strap at the end of the stick to gain enough room to slide the block off plates in. Picture a bow and arrow. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment, we are glad installation went well! If you disconnect the battery during installation as we suggest, or for at least 3-5 min, this will hard reset the ECM. After that, the ECM needs to relearn idle and fuel trims. This is perfectly normal behavior after a hard reset. Once the engine is running, we recommend letting it idle for at least 5 - 10 minutes before driving. If you have a moment we would really appreciate if you could leave a google review. g.page/r/CYkk2OeC9CgvEB0/review as well as a product review on our website.

Thanks for the video - the install of these block off plates on my 07 Tundra 5.7 was such a fun job. Started on passenger side 1st - it's the easier practice run. I backed off both nuts to about the end and then placed repeated pressure on the stud bolts alternately - whacked it about 3 dozen times with a long narrow hard wooden board with a big plastic impact hammer to loosen everything up and widen the gap as best I could; then while pushing on one of the studs I slipped the plate into place with very fine hand/finger coordination after dropping it a few times. Then I repeated on the driver side with another obstacle thrown in my way - surprise! Easy as that! FYI, I did find cheap replacement OEM splash shield on Amazon - search: Splash Shield Guard Flap Compatible with 2007-2020 Tundra & Sequoia Fender Liner Apron Replacement for 537360C030 537370C030. Of course, I've only used the kit for all of my "off road" driving - wink.

Just finished this installation on my 2012 sequoia with the 5.7 engine. The driver side block off plate was hardest for me. Even though i got it moving like in the video it was not enough to slip it in. I used a ratchet strap around the exhaust pipe from the top through the engine. Then I used a long wooden rod/handle that was thick. I pushed down on the handle like a lever with one end through strap loop and across the bar in front of the radiator so i didn't scratch any paint on the body. I pushed down hard on the other end of the rod and my wife slipped the plate in as i made more clearence. It was easier than anything else i tried. The passenger side was easier and went like the video. I was able to do it myself. She's driving great so fa, and there are no codes. Torqued the bolts to 7 ft pounds like he said in the video. So far so good. Hopefully I don't have to deal with this ever again.

Thanks for posting this, it was very helpful. The drivers side actually went quicker for me than the passengers side since it was the 2nd one I did. Using a piece of wood and a mallet did the trick, took several whacks, but left a opening to easily slide the blocking plate in. 4 years ago, I had installed the Gen 1 kit as a preventative but did not do the blocking plates because I thought that was unnecessary since everything worked fine. Bad idea, I should’ve listened to Hewitt Technologies advice to install the plates anyway! Had to drive 700 miles with my check engine light/limp mode popping up all day long. I took a big gamble clearing the codes and pushing on, but I had no choice but to get home.
@Hewitt-tech
@Hewitt-tech Год назад
No fun driving any distance in limp mode like that but we are glad you were able to make it home without damaging anything else. We tell people about this all the time. Other than the risks of driving the vehicle in limp mode (no power etc..) the main risk is the leaking exhaust damaging the pressure sensors in the air switching valves. Hopefully, more people will see your comment and it will help them understand why we always recommend installing the block off plates with the module. Thank you for taking the time to share!

@Hewitt-tech
@Hewitt-tech 2 года назад
Installing for prevention is a good idea and I would say that something like 10-20% of our customers are installing for prevention. The 2015 and later systems have some design improvements to help reduce failures but they are still failing. The Gen2 kit is the most comprehensive solution to ideally never deal with the problem. The main benefit of installing for prevention is the kit is easily removed if you ever sell/trade the vehicle and the secondary air system remains intact.

That sounds like you may have an air switching valve completely stuck open and did not install the block off plates. What you are describing is essentially an open exhaust through the air switching valves back to the secondary air system's air intake. Clear the trouble codes and if/when the CEL comes back on, get the codes scanned and give us a call with them.

Just got the gen II for a 07 Tundra 4.7L, I am wondering how to install the block off plates. The diagram only shows a big pic of the engine bay but not sure where the plates go. Are they accessible without going thru the wheel wells?
@Hewitt-tech
@Hewitt-tech Год назад
You are in luck. The 2007-2009 Tundra 4.7L and 2008-2009 Sequoia 4.7 both have a newer style of SAIS layout where the air switching valves are located on the top of each valve cover. On your truck, the plates install between the air switching valves which are shown circled red in the instruction and the metal air tube flange that connects to them. This makes it much easier to install the plates. On ALL other 4.7L Lexus/Toyota vehicles the plates install through the fender wells at the air tub connections on the exhaust manifold. On these vehicles the entire SAIS is located underneath the intake manifold so the exhaust manifold is the only accessible location to install the plates.

@Hewitt-tech
@Hewitt-tech Месяц назад
The block off plates (BOP) are an integral part of the solution and always recommended to be installed with the kit. When the block off plates are not installed, the valves can and do, leak later on down the road. Normally this would cause a valve stuck open code to let you know. However, when you are using the Pressure Sensor Replacement, if you do not have the block off plates installed and they leak you will not have a direct indicator. This can cause problems for your air/fuel ratios as you would essentially have an exhaust leak you wouldn't know about. It is always just best to install the BOP and not worry about it.

This could just be coincidental and seeing SAIS codes because the Bank #2 Air Switching Valve has failed. SAIS failure is pretty common of its own. Usually with a valve stuck open and pump stuck off code, the Gen2 kit is all that you would need. Especially if the problem just started and you haven't been driving around with the valve stuck open. When the valves get physically stuck open, exhaust leaks backwards through the air valves and can damage the pressure sensors. When this happens we have pressure sensor addons that may be needed. No, you do not need to the Air Pumps or the Air Switching Valves when installing the Hewitt Tech Bypass Kit. The only that you need to remove is one of the Air Injection Drivers by the Fuse box to mount the Bypass Module.

All of the 5.7L block off plates install exactly as shown in this video. Some of the other engine engines will have the block off plates install at the air switching valves if the valves are mounted on the top or side of the engine. Please give us a call or check on our website for your specific vehicle's installation instructions.

Can you install the bypass kit, then come back and install the blockoff plates another time or does it all have to be done at the same time?
@Hewitt-tech
@Hewitt-tech Год назад
They can be done separately. However, we do not recommend waiting to long to install the Block off Plates, especially if you have a "Valve Stuck Open" fault code. Driving with an open valve and expose the Pressure Sensor inside the Air Switching Valve to exhaust. If the Exhaust damages the pressure sensor you will need the Pressure Sensor Kit Addon in addition to the Bypass Kit.

After installing the kit is it ok to remove the lines under the intake that go to the pump in the fender well? I’m OCD about stuff like that and would rather remove them.
@Hewitt-tech
@Hewitt-tech Год назад
Yes, you can remove the air pump line that runs from the Fender to Air Switching Valve. These components are no longer operating and no air is being passed through this line. It is up to you, you can remove or leave on. Please us know if you have any additional question.

For a 2007 5.7l do you still recommend the Gen 2 kit or will the Gen 1 work fine for it?
@Hewitt-tech
@Hewitt-tech Год назад
Cody it all depends on what codes you are tripping. Or recommended solution is the Gen 2 because it is the most comprehensive solution. However, if you are only tripping Mechanical SAIS fault codes the Gen 1 could also be a viable option.

Will my truck still be ok to pass inspection after the bypass kit is installed? Thanks
@Hewitt-tech
@Hewitt-tech 4 года назад
Christopher, We only sell them for off road use or emissions exempt use only. It is illegal to bypass or otherwise make inoperable an emissions system that is required to be on the vehicle. Having said that what you decide to do with it is entirely up to you. As long as you don't have any other issues with the vehicle and can clear all the codes and get enough drive cycles on it for all the other emissions monitors to complete; it will pass if your off-road only vehicle was to be smog tested.

Any other benefits besides clearing codes/faults?
@Hewitt-tech
@Hewitt-tech Год назад
Our Bypass Kits can be installed as a reactive or proactive measure for SAIS fault codes. The most beneficial aspect would be to avoid "Limp Mode" which can be caused by SAIS failure. Limp Mode can put the vehicle into reduced power mode and limit acceleration, often time the vehicles speed is governed and will not get above 35 MPH. Additionally, the SAIS only impact emissions and there no gain in performance or fuel economy when the system is Bypassed.

Do you have to install the plates with the bypass module? Or will the module work without the plate?
@Hewitt-tech
@Hewitt-tech 2 года назад
The module will work without the plates but for certain codes/issues you must get them installed. "The block off plates are needed with the bypass kit to prevent the air switching valves from leaking exhaust and causing valve stuck open codes. Regardless of which bypass kit you are using from us, it is recommended to always install them so you don't have to worry about it later or misplace them if you need them later. You can find all of our bypass kits at Hewitt-tech.com as well as PDF copies of the installation instructions that come with the kits."

Can we just remove the pumps, valves, tubing and whatnot with the bypass kit to clean the engine up a bit and lose some weight/complexity? Would we need the optional add-on to make that happen without CEL's?
@Hewitt-tech
@Hewitt-tech Год назад
It depends on which kit you go with. The Gen1 kits would require addons to remove most of the components depending on vehicle. The Gen 2 kits will allow you to remove most of the system without addons except the air switching valves. To remove those, you would need the Pressure Sensor Addons. That is a "Full" kit. Please do not hesitate to give us a call if you have any additional questions.

@@dustindavis5445 Make sure you are not hitting the flange itself and only then ends of the studs. Once you get them knocked loose just push inward on the stud. It is best to have someone help by pushing them with something like a broom stick. You can also wedge the stick against the brake caliper and use the power steering the VERY CAREFULLY push the stud towards the center of the engine. **DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS METHOD UNLESS THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE IS COMPLETELY OFF THE GROUND AND COMPLETELY SECURED ON SAFETY STANDS** The plates are an integral part of the bypass kit solutions and are required if you have valve stuck open codes that come back on after installing the module only.
