Ray, it's great to see a good mechanic getting the respect they deserve in the comments on your videos. Not so long ago I remember when my son went into tech school for automotive work, people were "suggesting" that he could do better with his life. I'm proud of my son and he loves your videos... he's even admitted to watching you and SMA to get tips on hard to do jobs he has to work on. Love you work, keep it up.

22:15 Which is why, on those rare occasions I have to bring my truck to a shop--the big stuff I just don't have the tools or space for, typically--and I expect to have to wait while they work, I bring something to read or work on (I'm an illustrator, so I usually have drawing supplies with me, anyway). Keeps me from being bored while I wait, and it removes undue pressure from everyone else to "hurry up." I care more about the job being done right and within my budget than I do about it being done as fast as possible (don't get me wrong, I'm still pleased when it can be done quickly, but done right is _so much more important)._ Sorta already made my choice between "Done right, done cheap, and done fast. Pick any two."

@@fusionsportdaily1650 My brother is an actor and people often ask him, "How do you remember all those lines?", to which he replies while trying not to roll his eyes too much, "Well because that is what I DO." If he didn't he wouldn't be an actor for very long. Mechanics (and anyone who deals with complex assemblies of parts) remember where all that stuff goes because that is what they DO. If he didn't Ray wouldn't be a mechanic for very long. A good mechanic, like a good actor, can remember how it all goes together even years later. They can scan an engine compartment for a few seconds and spot things that "ain't right" because that is what they do. Quite possibly most professions are like that... lawyers, doctors, musicians, artists, programmers, cooks, real estate agents, cops, farmers, sailors, DJs, whatever.

Beautiful SUV. I loved how you actually remembered how to put it all back together. I may have had a few bolts left over on that one. Not important ones of course. You are an amazing mechanic Rainman Ray. A small oil leak and you are disassembling a half a car. You are thorough and because of you I started going to my NAPA Auto Pro again. They are good people to deal with. Quick diagnostics, and right one too, and quick service with a lot of care on detail. Any other problems are listed and left to my discretion as to whether a repair is to be scheduled. I know you are not advertising a shop name but I assume that is where you work too. Have a great day, and remember, when somebody tries to make you have a bad day, walk away and keep having a great day.

Fun fact about grounding straps; there's usually more than one to include redundancy in case of failure, but can often cause warning lamps to come on (in later model years) when the system detects increased resistance in the affected circuits. Older ones, not so much.... I had an old Volvo that drove around like that for like a year before I noticed it because of how and where it had broken.

I got mine out using some penetrating fluid, an angled pry bar and a screwdriver under it.

Question from a guy who loves Rays videos but I am not a car mechanic but feel like I can find a repair guy better because of the content. Question: why does the customer bring their own parts vs having the shop get what they need? Do shops typically charge more for customer brought parts similar to a restaurant charging a corkage fee?
@spaceflight1019
@spaceflight1019 Год назад
We had this discussion in Part One of this saga. The customer may have purchased the parts at the shop but had to wait for a service appointment. When my 2001 Ram died the dealer called me and said that I could wait 2 weeks for the OEM part or they could get one from the Auto Zone next door. My neighbor's family has owned a tire shop for 3 generations now. He gets really frosted when people bring Tire Rack tires and insist that he mount and balance them. When you buy his tires that's included in the price. Mail order tires pay $50 per wheel. He has to pay for the machines, he has to pay to maintain the machines, he has to provide shop space, compressed air, calibrated torque wrenches, and labor.
