It's nice to be Toyota and have all the leverage in the world with your suppliers, but JIT doesn't work for 99% of the world's companies. They simply don't have the leverage required in their supply chain to have complete control over their supplier's businesses and how they will be run. That's necessary of JIT in purest form is to work. Theory Of Constraints is a much better more realistic approach.
JIT requires discipline. If you don't have that in your company, you won't be able to do it. We "try" to do it in our company, but only in certain aspects. JIT is hard and requires everyone to be on the same page. When you do JIT right, your operating costs diminish significantly.
