The bain of MR2 ownership! This Video is the last part of the footage I shot last year when I completed by brake caliper/pads/discs upgrade.
This is a simple job and takes about ten minutes...or quicker if you use the blue tak/putty method (watch the video....you'll see!).

Enjoyed your video, just one thing , before you tighten up the cable , first slacken it off, then start your engine , pump the brake peddle 20 times , then repeat, this is to maximize to pad contact on the rear disc, then tighten it all up, this is per workshop manual . i have one of these cars 04 reg and with the help of people like your self on You Tube have rebuilt the engine , suspension, brakes etc.Thanks Again

Hey David thanks for watching and for your great feedback. When I first started the channel I couldn't find hardly anything on the MK3 MR2 so thought I'd make some, glad they are useful. Some top tips there for everyone...thanks :) 👍

Great little vid showing something useful that can be done in 15 minutes and could mean the difference between passing the MOT or not. Also, this could go on the annual maintenance list as a 'good to do' it's that easy. Keep them coming buddy, really helpful.

+John Walsh thanks John. I think the handbrake issues these MR2'S have could probably be avoided with more use (most are weekend cars) and a bit of careful maintenance like you say. The design isn't the greatest at the caliper end with the boots which aren't available separately. I've been looking into motorbike cable gaiters etc to try and find a replacement for people to source but finding one that fits the ends snugly is proving difficult. Thanks for watching and commenting...much appreciated. Lets me know how things are being received :)

The problem on most marques of MR2 is - as you say - the boots on the handbrake joints. Once split water/dirt ingress causes partial failure or full seizure. Good luck with the cable research, keep us posted.

Thanks for this video my man, recently took on an MR2 and the handbrake has been annoying me since purchase. Your guide made it super simple so thank you so much! 👍

No problem, glad it helped. If there is anything I might be able to cover in a vid that I haven't already give me a shout 👍

Its easier to take the handbrake cover off if you pop the little plastic cover just below the hanbrake lever, it gives you a bit more space for the lever to move... Great video! :)

Thank you, will try this - when parking on a hill I have to put the handbrake on, get passengers out, then slide out myself with my foot on the brake until I'm out. Not very graceful!

Leave it in gear, your car is dangerous left like that. And get the hb sorted.

As Keto says... foot on brake, clutch down engine off, put in gear. Much less of a problem and safer...just remember its in gear and take it out and into neutral before starting!

How did you fix the stuck cable at 2:36? I removed console and discovered exact same situation. Thanks for helping.

If the cable is stuck and not moving when the end at the caliper is disconnected the it's likely they are seized or seizing and need to be replaced. The fuel tank need to be lowered to be able to do this and from the experience learned from other owners buy the Toyota handbrake cables....everyone else's have failed pretty quickly...seizing up and it's not a job you want to do twice in a hurry. If you are in the UK get in touch with TCB performance in Cornwall, they stock OEM parts cheaper than the dealer.

So my hand brake doesn’t hold my car in place on my driveway. I found it in the street today. Will this tighten the handbrake so the car doesn’t roll?

The rear calipers are a pain on the MR2 and a poor handbrake could be needing adjustment but it is more likely to be either seizing handbrake cables or calipers. Before you adjust get the rear of the car on axle stands, take off the rear wheels and see if the cables pull the caliper levers when you operate the handbrake, if they don't move disconnect the cables and then see if the cables move when operated. If they don't the cables are likely seized and need replacing, if they do move the calipers may be seized or seizing. Could be just one side is a problem, could be both. If you haven't worked on brakes before get someone competent to help you or take to a garage. I have another video on the problems I had with the rear calipers / handbrake. 👍🙂

could use a 90degrees bent or a flexi screw driver to undo the two front screws?
@DadDiaries
@DadDiaries 6 лет назад
Absolutely!....a 90 degree screwdriver is what I used :)
@vinzanity68

how did u remove the front screws from the housing? the seats get in the way.
@DadDiaries
@DadDiaries 7 лет назад
+vinzanity68 I had a small right angled screwdriver which I undid them with...not the easiest....it is much easier to remove the seats.. four bolts and unclip the pad sensor and it lifts straight out. You'll find it A LOT easier that way.
@Dalek355
@Dalek355 7 лет назад
Yes it really is that easy to remove the seats, it takes around 10 minutes to do both.
