The content we have at our fingertips is crazy. Just 10 years ago videos like this were rare. If you wanted to learn what it's like to be in the field, you had to go in the field. As someone who's just a few weeks away from starting work as a technician, these videos are invaluable. I'm starting out with a much greater knowledge base to draw on than any beginner you'd typically see, and that will be instrumental in my success early on. You, Ivan, Keith, ScannerDanner and EricTheCarGuy are a big reason I have successfully diagnosed countless problems with friends and family vehicles, as well as my own. And the knowledge I've gleaned from all these channels is only going to get more valuable when I start doing this for a living. Thank you.

What an excellent review of how to do things properly and efficiently. Good diagnostics don't have to be slow, and you don't need a lot of fancy tools. Regarding the antiseize, most of the O2 sensors I've put on come with their own little packet or have it on already. Maybe it's becoming an urban myth, but I've read a few times that the wrong antiseize can mess up the O2 sensor, presumably by mucking up the sensor end in some way. Does anybody know more about how that happens? I suppose when it gets really hot, you could change the local oxygen concentration around the outside of the sensor, changing readings. Or, maybe when really hot the wrong antiseize could drip down onto the end of the sensor, covering the end that needs to sample the exhaust gas.

@johnaclark1
@johnaclark1 7 лет назад
A friend brought me his 05 Accord 2.4L the other day that was setting the MIL intermittently. When I scanned it it was showing P0141 (B1S2 heater code) stored but not turning on the MIL at the moment. I did these same tests, expecting to see an open or real high resistance but got around 8-9 ohms on the heater which comes to only about 1.5 - 1.7 amps. I backprobed the heater wires, connected my Vantage meter, and saw a nice PWM square wave for the heater from 0-14 volts while the engine was running, so obviously PCM and wiring to the sensor check out. I thought the heaters always failed open but it seems they can go intermittent or just slightly high, too. I found a spec in my 07-10 Odyssey factory service manual (assuming they're the same) for the rear O2 heater and it gives 5.4 - 6.6 ohms. I can only assume the heater is either failing intermittently or just going high enough resistance to set the code when the engine is cold. Will find out after I put the new sensor in on Friday.
@SouthMainAuto
@SouthMainAuto 7 лет назад
I have seen them fail intermittently for sure. Eventually it will go open
@johnaclark1
@johnaclark1 7 лет назад
First time I've seen it intermittent. It's always been open when I've checked one with a heater code. Thanks for the confirmation of that! I couldn't 100% verify the bad sensor, since heater resistance can change with heat, other than ruling everything else out.
@InsideOfMyOwnMind
@InsideOfMyOwnMind 7 лет назад
johnaclark1 Big huge major thing to point out with the repair of anything electrical, mechanical or even biological, every possible failure type can and does often present as intermittant unless of course you're talking about catastrophic failure of a given component. Anyone with experience will treat every diag process as potentiality intermittant in the way they handle things like harnesses, connectors, sensors, etc. If you were to try (and why would you) you could turn 80% of those "sure deals" into intermittant nightmares.

Thanks for taking the time to make this great video. The Toyota OEM part number for this sensor is 89467-08070. It will cost about $223 plus tax at your local Toyota dealer. I bought my part on Amazon from a Toyota dealer in Daytona Beach Florida for $155, no tax, no shipping. Toyota gets this part from Denso so another option if you don't want to order the part over the Internet is to go to Advance Auto Parts. They sell Denso #234-9049 for $159 plus tax.

G'day, Mr. O! I am Sharing... A very useful tool! (Actron - CP9690) "The tool use is very straight forward and intuitive. Within 10 minutes of playing with it you have most of its function down. I used it to read a check engine light. Read P0420 which is catalyst inefficiency. I let the car warm up and then selected live diagnostics. You can see all the PID's or you can create your own custom list. I like that feature. I selected the PID's relevant that I needed to see to confirm a diagnosis. Short and long term fuel trim shows me that the engine is running rich (too much fuel in the mixture). Coolant temp is spot on. Voltage feedback from the O2 sensors showed me what I needed to see. Then I recorded a short 5 min drive, and graphed the data. Downstream O2 sensor is all over the place. Verified that the O2 sensor is working properly. P0420 in my case is a bad catalytic converter." Plus, the scanners troubleshooting is a nice feature as well. Useful for Veterans, and inexperienced wrench turners alike, It gives you a checklist so you know where to start and where you should start searching next. It certainly help to save money by not throwing parts at a vehicle. Thank you! Cheers! :-)

I am anxious for you review ! Your old one was a CP9580. That is a CP9690. The only down side to that model is the current software only handles ABS and SRS up through 2013. It would be nice if it handled tire pressure monitors. 4 years is a long time without updating the software. Actron is now owned by Bosch and that model looks identical to the Bosch OBD 1350. I also think Mac resells the same one. Bosch also owns OTC now.

Ok EricO, thing is I am soon to move to BC Canada, in UK right now, I am 63 yrs old and retiring, what you have shown here is how honest and trustworthy you are, I have learned lots about North American vehicles from watching your vids, (I did 20 yrs as a mechanic here in UK when younger) if I were closer when I moved to BC I would come to you for all my vehicle needs, which made me think, your next step could be featuring customers who travel just to get you to fix their vehicle, as I think that will be pretty common soon, in fact maybe buy yourself an old Motel to put them all up, I would happily be one of those customers, either way, another great logical fix top work, Dave

I still use my nearly 20 year old Actron to do quick checks and resets. You can't beat their reliability.

What bulb did you use to check heater control from ecm? Is it a regular 194 bulb?

What I'd like to know is why I need a heater circuit. What happened to if the heat gauge says warm cut the heater on?

If you happen to know, out of curiosity I was wondering if this sienna is a 3.3L?
@khoayeuha

what's the part number and what model sienna this work for? My 2009 sienna got a check engine, VSC, trac off lights and Autozone scan threw the P0051 code. Is this situation the same issue?
