Toyota Prius Prime PHEV Charge Controller works on 240 volts AC, save thousands

The included charger controller for the 2019 Toyota Prius Prime Plug in Hybrid seems to work for me on 240 Volts AC as well as the 120 volts AC Toyota recommends. On 240 VAC the charge time is significantly reduced.

just an update. I now have a new 2023 Prius Prime PHEV and it came with the exact same charging cord so I'm using the same method and it works flawlessly with the 2023 model as well

Thanks for the hack! I already have a welding plug with a 50 amp breaker in my garage. Cheers!

Thank you so much! I purchased a Japanese second hand 2014 Prius PHV yesterday and I had to change the Japanese 200V plug into an Australian one. Once I opened the Japanese plug, I realised that their neutral (white) wire is corresponding to the Australian live (brown) wire. So, I was really struggling online to find relevant info till I realise Japan uses similar split-phase as US and Canada; I then found your video which further confirms that there isn't really a neutral wire in such a split-phase plug. So, my Australian plug is working fine now.

Good stuff. I own a 2022 Prime slow charging on 120V so will give this a try on 240V but not with extension cords. Will wire up a separate wall receptacle with 2 hots. Thanks.

Ya I cleaned mine up to a better setup, still working great

I might also try this. I've been trying to find a video that talks about the Toyota OEM charger and what it can handle. I also own the 2022 Rav4 Prime with the 6.6KWh ob charger. For now, I just charge the unit from my 120 and it takes around 12hrs to fully charge from 0 to 100. I've been looking to buy the EV Doubler from Amazon that serves the same purpose as demonstrated in the video. It takes power from to separate outlets to produce the 240v. The ev doubler is around 100$ on Amazon.

It shows the llarge $1500 charger is just an empty box doing the same as a tiny cheap charge controller. Maybe it supports larger current but for small prius battery it makes no difference.

Friendly reminder- this is bypassing the low amp fuses and the only fuse is the main. Drop the cord into salty water on the floor or mess something up and this could kill you. Do this the right way- with proper fuses.

Hmm not too sure what you are referring to. Both of the separate 120volt branch circuits are protected by 15 amp breakers. This does not degrade the protection for these branch circuits in any way

Humm, firstly, I'm so very glad that little pup isn't a big licker. Loads of exposed conductors with current. One touch could mean death for him/her........... So, another reason to cancel our order for the Prime. The fact we were told the car could be charged with 220 volts without buying a separate charger is yet one more detraction. Where we live, even though most power is generated by hydro, the cost to consumers is excessive. Been waiting 17 months already for the thing to land, the dealer Rep. didn't even know the car could be plugged in !. Now, they are telling us it will be at least another 3 months before it arrives ! @@waltersavonian7551

How's this been for you in the long run everything working just fine? Also pro tip. You can always get your dedicated outlet in the garage and throw a two pole breaker and turn it into a 240v and label it so no one plugs anything in.

So I can plug my charger into my dryer outlet and get a faster charge?
@waltersavonian7551
@waltersavonian7551 Год назад
What I can tell you is that I routinely plug my factory supplied Toyota charger into 240volts and charge my 2019 Prius Prime in 2 hours instead of the 5 hours it takes to charge when plugged into a standard 120volt outlet

There are actually "kits" that double your dryer outlet to charge your car at 220 volts. Just can't use the dryer and charge the car at the same time. Basically 220 is using both "hot" incoming wires, where as 120 is one of the hot wires and a neutral. Plus, like anything, chargers are made for a certain amps output. Remember, you are watching a RU-vid person.

@@MrMikebutkus yes there are several ways to make it work, if in doubt contact a certified electrician

What you're saying doesn't make any sense. The electricity costs the same whether it's 120 volt or 240 volt.
@waltersavonian7551
@waltersavonian7551 2 месяца назад
yes its costs the same to charge your car on 120 or 240 since the watt hours used are the same in either case. The cost saving are from not having to buy a dedicated 240v charger for the car and instead using the one supplied by Toyota when you buy the car and feeding it 240v instead of 120v.

Do you know if you’re pulling 15amps on your 240v charger? Just got a level 2 240V 40amp charger but the display shows it peaking at 14.5 amps. So it’s taking longer to do a full charge. Like 2 hr 40 min.
@waltersavonian7551
@waltersavonian7551 Год назад
Hmm, mine takes the 2hours 10mins as mentioned in the manual for the car on 240 volts. However I have found if I plug into 2 into volt outlets at a commercial building that has 3 phase power then there is only 208 volts between phases and I take more than the 2:10 prolly more like 2:40

yes I've since refined the final solution but the video was mostly just to get the idea out there so people would understand the concept and be able to come up with a solution that works in their particular situation

I actually ended up putting a 240 plug in and then made an adapter from 240 plug to 120v plug but 240v on the 120v so now I can just use 120v or 240v Thanks for the video
