For large families, corporate use and corporate shuttles there are very few choices on the SA market. Possibly unfortunately for Toyota, the Quantum is immediately identified and associated with the taxi industry.
Well, this is the Quantum with a difference. Starting with the defined front grille with lots of chrome and LED headlights, this bus bears a closer look. Its also the LONG wheelbase version which does make it a touch unwieldy in shopping centre parking areas.
The VX provides a true luxury experience. From the cream coloured quilted leather on the seats, active cruise control and lane departure warning to the special seats as you move into the rear. Immediately behind the front seats are a pair of individual seats that wouldn't look out of place in the first class cabin of a Boeing 747. Offering powered adjustment to the footrests, backrests and fore and aft movement so you can decide how much legroom you need.
Behind are another 2 individual seats more like the drivers pew and then, finally 3 "cheap seats"right at the back. Moving from the powered side doors past the executive seats does require a bit of twisting and contortion but once ensconced, all nine passengers are provided with plenty of air-con vents for comfort.
Typically of all similar vehicles, boot space is non-existent with all 9 seats in use. Either make use of a trailer or remove the rearmost 3 seats and this becomes an ultra-luxury 6 seater with enormous luggage capacity.
The familiar 2.8 GD-6 4 cylinder diesel engine is rated at 115kW and 420Nm through the rear wheels. On paper this may not sound like too much but it is deceptive on the road. Cruising all day at 120km/ hour is this vehicles forte. The 6 speed automatic transmission is smooth and unflustered, again contributing to the overall smoothness.
Our fuel consumption for a full week was 9.8l/100km, perfectly acceptable for a big vehicle of this sort.
As tested, the current price is R966 300 and this includes the Toyota 9 service/ 90 000km service plan.
