This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the Toyota RAV4 Prime plug-in versus the Hyundai Sonata Fe PHEV, also a plug-in hybrid SUV.The Toyota RAV4 Prime has a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine with Toyota’s hybrid system and an ECVT, 302 horsepower and 68 km/ 42 miles of EV range and standard AWD. It has an 18.8 kWh battery and you can put regular fuel in this RAV4 Prime. The Santa Fe PHEV has a 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor, a 6-speed automatic transmission and a combined 261 horsepower. It offers standard AWD and 50 km/30 miles of EV range. It has a 13.8 kWh battery and you can put regular fuel in this Santa Fe PHEV. For EV rebates in Canada, the RAV4 Prime with an 18.8 kWh battery qualifies for the full Federal rebate of $5,000. The Santa Fe with a 13.8 kWh battery qualifies for half, $2,500. Electrified vehicles need to have a battery that is 15 kWh or larger to qualify for the full Federal EV rebate. There are also Provincial rebates available in most Provinces but there are some that don't participate, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario. In the US, the Santa Fe qualifies for a tax credit up to $6,587 and the RAV4 Prime $7,500. The RAV4 Prime comes standard with a 6.6 kW onboard charger in Canada. In the US, you get a 3.3 kW charger but a 6.6 kW charger is available in a package. With a 3.3kW charger and a 120-volt outlet, your charging time is 12 hours and with a 240 volt outlet, it’s 4.5 hours. With a 6.6kW charger and a 240-volt outlet, your charging time is 2.5 hours The Santa Fe comes with a 3.3 kW onboard charger. With a 120-volt outlet, your charging time is 10.5 hours and with a 240-volt outlet, it’s 3.4 hours. The RAV4 Prime has a comfortable, practical and versatile interior with plenty of storage with the battery mounted underneath the floor. Standard features include, an 8-inch touchscreen, a 7-inch multi-information display, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, heated front and rear cloth seats, 8-way power driver’s seat and a heated steering wheel. In the US, a heated steering wheel is not standard, packages are available to add extra features. The top trim is where you’ll find the larger 9” touchscreen, a wireless charger and mixed Softtex and fabric seats. Add the Technology package to get driver seat memory, a power passenger seat, ventilated front seats, a head-up display and an 11-speaker JBL Audio system.
Hyundai vehicles are becoming more upscale and you can see it in this interior with quilted leather seats, a 12.3” digital driver display, a convenient and practical floating centre console with lots of storage. There are plenty of physical buttons in the cabin including a button shifter and you will find it to be open, spacious and comfortable. The battery pack is located under the front passenger seat, so it has no impact on cabin or cargo space.
Some standard features include, an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, leather-seating surfaces, heated front seats, a leather wrapped heated steering wheel and 8 way power driver and passenger seats. The top trim is where you’ll find ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a wireless charger, the digital driver display, 4-way power driver’s lumbar support, a panoramic sunroof and proximity activated smart liftgate. There is no head-up display available in this PHEV or the option of the larger 10.25” touchscreen in Canada, it is available in the US.

I drove the Rav4, Venza, Tucson and Santa Fe. Hands down, the Santa Fe had more room, better options than the Rav4 or Venza. We do lots of driving and comfort is prime. The Rav4 and Venza have a much harder drive. When we went across the railroad tracks, you felt the clunk. I went faster in the Santa Fe and Tucson and it was much smoother of a ride. The panoramic moon roof is much nicer than the moon roof on the Rav4. No moonroof on the Venza except in the Limited edition. For us, the Tucson didn't have the cargo room so that was a no. The Venza and Rav4 do not have the cargo space the Santa Fe has. Overall, (and also being a Toyota owner for 35 years), the Santa Fe will be my next purchase.

I’m the follower from Texas that Andrea mentioned in the video. I placed my deposit down on 12/4 and just told them what I wanted ( Prime SE, with or without weather package is fine, color doesn’t matter) as I read before it is easier to get one if you’re not very specific. Several hours later, got a call that THREE SE’s were being allocated, one was spoken for and two were not. I put my name on one and it’ll be here hopefully within the next week. As Zack mentioned in the video, us being in Texas could be why we got one. TMNA headquarters are in Plano, TX (about a 3 hour drive from where I live in Austin) and I have visited Toyota of Plano a few times while in Dallas, and when I inquired about Prime’s and their proximity to headquarters, they said it doesn’t matter, because Texas is not a ZEV state, so the allocations will go mostly to the ZEV states instead. In this case, I just got lucky. Hope this helps anyone else.

I was at the Toyota dealership in North Vancouver last week and the salesperson told me it was now a 3 to 4 year wait for a new RAV4 Prime. Yikes! So glad we bought our Venza Limited when we did. No dealerships had the one we wanted but there was one on a ship on it's way to Vancouver. So we bought that one off the boat. And we love it!

2022 car shopping, you can't buy what they don't have, and most manufacturers can't make enough cars, Ford Lightning, Ford Maverick Hybrid, VW ID4, Kia Sorrento PHEV, Hyundai Tucson PHEV, Ionic 5 EV, Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV, there all in short supply.

Hands down the Santa Fe PHEV. The RAV4 is outdated and the interior and tech really shows it. Less room on the inside as well and not even seatback pockets in the backseat area? Talk about shaving the pennies. The Santa Fe is a new generation SUV built on an all new platform so the benefits really show with its space interior. The configurable backseat and underfloor storage are absolute musts for us and our growing family. The ONLY thing going for the RAV4 is the hybrid powertrain and their "reliability" depending on who you talk to. Talk to my aunt who owns a 16' Highlander and you'll hear how Toyota is not everything they used to be. As the Hyundai ads say- they've come "a long long way"

I have the Santa Fe PHEV and I am very satisfied with it. Works perfectly for the commute to work and not missing any of the things Prime have to offer over this, + enjoying all the little extras that the Santa Fe offers over Prime. It may not be as efficient or have as much range as the Prime, but for us it works out just fine.

Good choice! I own a Santa Fe Hybrid Limited and I have enjoyed it since ownership. I drove the RAV 4 Prime last year August when we were car shopping for the family, but once I entered and drove the Santa Fe, I knew I was completely done with Toyota. I am trying to trade in my Santa Fe Hybrid Limited, which I have owned and enjoyed for 4months to a Plug-in Hybrid. Hopefully, that would be a good move.

Honda needs to get with the program and offer a plug-in hybrid variant of the CR-V that competes with the range of the RAV4 Prime. Not a fan of Hyundai's designs (Kia does it better) so it's not even a contest for me.

I really appreciate your reviews & the comparisons. Toyota has a great long term reputation but may have peaked while Hyundai's star is still rising. Love your reviews but your repeated comments about the ROI from Bank O Toyota is starting to sound like a Toyota advertisement . It isn't yet written what the resale value will be on these two models in 5 years -- if the SF proves to be reliable, they may match the R4 value. It will be really interesting to see what the resale. Of course that doesn't help today's buyer I Speaking of resale, I have a CarMax offer on my 7 yr old 2015 Subaru Outback for 69% of its original value (WA state). Bank of Subaru! But Subaru needs get in gear & jump into the Hybrid pool bigtime soon if its gonna continue to compete.
@johnjames7712
@johnjames7712 2 года назад
You’re gonna get that much for your 7 year old Subaru because of how crazy the used market is right now. And you can make a good educated guess on the resale of the RAV4 Prime if you look at Toyota resale historically, like in the case of the 4Runner and Tacoma.

Nice review and appreciate the insight. My family already has a 2020 Rav4 which has probably biased my opinion because the extra power and weight of the Prime likely makes it a very different driving experience. I'm picking up a Santa Fe PHEV Limited on 12/26 and am really looking forward to it but I've owned two Chevy Volts so the bar for plug-in hybrid performance is pretty high by comparison (i.e., the Volt runs equally well on gas as electric.) I suspect the extra room and luxury features or the Santa Fe will be great but curious overall how it performs as an PHEV.

From another channel comments, there is one key information that keeps Toyota stand out. That's the presence of heat pump. For Hyundai, if you want to keep heat on, the engine kicks in even if you are in EV mode. Similarly, when you press the pedal hard, engine kicks in. I heard that Toyota has enough power to keep it moving with EV mode alone. However, Santa Fe interior and build quality make up for these negatives. It's a vehicle to stay relaxed. It's also worth noting the driver assistance systems in Hyundai is almost comparable to Tesla Autopilot.
@smokynagata88
@smokynagata88 2 года назад
This is correct. Toyota had 4 iterations of hybrid engines. This was also an issue with Toyota’s first hybrid Prius in the 90s, which they addressed with the clever heat pump system in their second generation Prius. More efficiency, less stress on the engine, etc. The engineering on the inverter tech/overall engine is much more clever and efficient on the Toyota.
@nevco8774
@nevco8774 2 года назад
In fact even prior generations of PHEVs from Hyundai like Ioniq PHEV needed to kick on the engine to heat the cabin not having even resistive heater like Toyota Prius Prime. Also the pure EV driving is difficult since engine starts in pure EV mode in each instance of acceleration not having a stable threshold like in Toyota RAV4 Prime. Also Hyudai/Kia has minimal powered internal charger of 3.2 kW. Those are main drawback issues in Hyundai/Kia.

There is so much to like for each. I think the Rav4 looks better from the front but the Santa Fe looks better from the side IMO. :) The Santa Fe has such a nice interior and I sure do dig the extra space. A few years ago I made the mistake of leaving Toyota and getting a 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe. In the first three months, I had so many issues with it, with more to come, so I traded it in on an older Toyota. I'm not in the market for a plug in hybrid, but if I were, I'd definitely go with Toyota for the excellent reliability and resale value. Plus, Toyota was the pioneer in hybrid technology back in the late 1990s. They may not have the fanciest, cutting edge features, but at least what they put out is reliable.

In some places like for instance in Northern Idaho Kia and Hyundai dealerships propose free lifetime warranty for free. Considering RAV4 Prime is not available for regular consumers without connections then Hyundai might have better sales especially for folks not rotating cars each 2 years worried about resale value but planning to keep the car for a while. On this channel Andrea admitted several days ago that interior of Kia Sorento PHEV is better than a similarly sized BMW they tested a while ago. Great review! I honestly feel hesitant about owning a Hyundai. Hyundai/Genesis as well as Kia had to recall hundreds of thousands of their vehicles again this year because of engine problems. This is nothing new as this brand has had the issue before. Even professional mechanics and car enthusiasts have admitted that Hyundai tried too hard to push for a luxury brand to compete with its German and Japanese competitors. The result was a disastrous auto engineering, hence, why it has a 10-year warrant for its cars. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in November of 2020 that Hyundai and Kia would have to pay $137 million to cover fines and safety improvements so they remedy the engine issue.

Can't talk about numbers without going back to dealer markups. I purchased a PHEV in October and markups on the RAV4 Prime in the US are RIDICULOUS. All efficiency, resale, even reliability arguments are out the window when dealers are asking up to $40k over MSRP. No amount of gas savings or residual value will make up for that. I ended up getting an Escape PHEV which I've been pretty happy with. Bland looks aside, I am getting over 1000mi to an 11gal tank thanks to free charging at work. You may have mentioned it and I wasn't paying attention, but the eCVT system used by Ford and Toyota (maybe the Pacifica minivan too?) is a discriminator. It's excellent and unlike regular CVTs.

We are lucky in Canada, markups over msrp aren’t allowed. Maybe that’s why more products go to USA where a dealer can make 40k profit on one of these. 😂

In my experience Hyundai PHEV reliability is awful. I own a 2017 Hyundai Sonata PHEV, which experienced hybrid system failure on i95 (nearly causing an accident) on Aug 31, 2021. Two months later, during which time the Hyundai dealer made two unsuccessful repair attempts, I picked up my car only to have Hybrid system failure occur for the third time before I even made it to the first traffic light. The service center then told me the car (under warranty) needs a new battery pack, which I have been waiting for over the past FIVE months. The car has been out of service for SEVEN months and Hyundai has refused all buyback attempts. I bought a new Rav4 Prime in Feb…..If I ever get my Hyundai back it will be sold.

“Bank of Toyota”… The RAV4 will retain 62% of its value after 5 years. Top trim purchase price is $57k CDN. After 5 years, vehicle is worth $35.34k. Depreciation cost is $57k - $34.34k = $21.66k. The Santa Fe will retain 50% of its value after 5 years. Top trim purchase price is $49k. After 5 years, vehicle is worth $24.5k. Depreciation cost is $49k - $24.5k = $24.5k Another way to look at it… If I start with $57k and purchase the RAV4, after 5 years I will have a vehicle worth $35.4K If I start with $57k and purchase the Santa Fe, after 5 years I will have a vehicle worth $24.5k, plus $8k (and interest) from the lower purchase price. Total assets = $24.5k + $8k = $32.5k (plus interest on $8k compounded over 5 years)

If you're going to keep your vehicle for longer than 5 years then who cares about the Bank of Toyota? If you're getting rid of your vehicle in 4 years or less than leasing may be the preferred way to go since you shouldn't be financing the residual value. From most of the comparisons this channel does the residual after 5 years is around the 50% mark, give or take a few percentage points. Anything longer and the residual value becomes less relevant.

@@robertduklus6555 The eCVT found on the Toyota Prius and other hybrids differs from CVTs found in other vehicles, such as the 2013 Nissan Altima or 2012 Scion iQ, because it does not use a belt or chain connected to a pair of variable pulleys. Instead, an eCVT uses electric motor/ generators to control the speeds of planetary gearset components. This allows the eCVT to continuously change the gear ratio, keeping the engine’s rpm in the sweet spot. Just like when driving other CVT-equipped vehicles, drivers of vehicles with eCVTs don’t feel the step change common to traditional automatic transmissions, yet the mechanisms (planetary gears) to achieve acceleration are largely the same.
