Don't kid yourself. That was definitely a giant ad. There's a reason they're sponsored by toyota and you just know Toyota wrote or at least reviewed her script beforehand.

Ever since as a high school senior I read an article in a magazine about a 1971 Toyota Corolla that was converted to hydrogen. That was 1973 and I have been a whole hearted proponent of using hydrogen as a fuel. But when you're just a small voice you have to wait for the bigger voices to find theirs. I was heartened in 1998 when during the Clinton era CNN produced a news story about fuel cell vehicles but the disappointing fact was that the Auto Industry R&D shops were working with the Oil Industry to figure out how to limit fuel cells to use gasoline as the hydrogen source. They did not want you to be able to pour in water to the fuel cell and get hydrogen that was since there are two molecules of hydrogen to one of oxygen. And if the power package was in internal combustion engine one of the byproducts is water from the heat of the exhaust condensing. It has always been my thought of creating a closed loop internal combustion power train that would only need "Topping Off".

I presume Shannon got paid so much to avoid mentioning all the problems with Hydrogen based cars? - that most hydrogen is obtained by splitting natural gas - so it is still hydrocarbon based - the power needed to produce the hydrogen is about the same as that needed to run an electric car - no mention of the pressure that the gas is under within the car's tank and the filling station (with one hydrogen filling station already blowing up in 2010 - Rochester, NY) - that at the end of filling the car's system, the hose vents some pressurized hydrogen into the air - that they have not found any way to accurately measure the hydrogen dispensed into the car - To stay a liquid, hydrogen must be super-cooled - when not using fuel the tank starts to warm and the hydrogen starts to vaporize. Once the tank’s internal pressure peaks at roughly 17 hours of non-use, the tank will vent the pressure. Over two weeks it will completely lose the contents of the tank.

I wish I was paid that much. I reviewed everything they discussed in the press event. Your other questions are the same ones I had, so I did other videos with some Toyota reps to really dig deeper into the technology. More to come.

Not a very intelligent attack Roy. A hydrogen filling station blew up?? Wow, that's never happened to a petrol station or an LPG tank. Why would you accuse Shannon of being a shill for Toyota without any proof. It's more likely that you are a shill for the opposition. You also sound like one of those sort of people who complained about replacing a perfectly good horse with an automobile. Fuel cells are the future but you stick to your horse Roy.
@experimental0000
@experimental0000 9 лет назад
hawkesworth1712 Is correct on all points.. Not only that but there are many other ways to generate Hydrogen besides splitting Natural Gas.
@MrRoyRichardson
@MrRoyRichardson 9 лет назад
hawkesworth1712 Yes petroleum stations have had fires which on occasion eventually led to an explosion, but usually as a result of a member of the public doing something really stupid like crashing at high speed into a pump, but I am unaware of any such station ever blowing up through normal operation by a skilled technician (as occurred in this case). Clearly Shannon got money for the piece - why else would it be headed by the "brought to you by" comment? Normally Shannon's pieces are good pieces of journalism where the pros and cons are discussed which is why I subscribe to her channel - I look forward to her more in depth review promised, should she be truly free to express such questions. No I have no connection whatsoever with any form of propulsion, and am open to new forms like electric and fuel cell - I am all for fuel cells provided we get a rational review of how the problems with Hydrogen will be tackled. Yes there are other ways of generating Hydrogen than by splitting natural gas (where most hydrogen comes from today) - but electrolysis for example uses massive amounts of electricity to generate that hydrogen (such that an electric car could run further on the electricity used than a fuel cell car on the hydrogen created) - if hydrogen is really the future and widely adopted then the method of production and other issues needs to be clearly identified - if we are just swapping natural gas for petroleum then it is fairly pointless.

Once we have Fusion Reactors figured out either Hydrogen and or Electric are indeed the path for the future. Tesla recently released their patents in much the same way Toyota just did and for the auto industry this is indeed a forward direction. Kudos to both companies. To my understanding we have approximately 25 years of fossil fuels that can be readily used in cars and the clock is ticking.

Yes, there is hydrogen everywhere, however it is currently attached to another molecule. Separating these molecules requires energy. This is currently done with fossil fuels. I don't see this as the future right now because of this. Electricity must be produced by fossil or nuclear power but, the amount of electricity we produce from that fuel is so much greater. This is why I feel electric vehicles are the way of the future.

one thing i want to know is how much is the refill gonna be. my tank fills up for 27 dollars as of today's $1.80 a gallon pricing. and when are we just gonna get cars we put water in and it separates the oxygen and lets it go in the air and takes the hydrogen to power it.????

LOL Hydrogen as a fuel energy storage. 0.08988 grams per Litre @ STP. Terrible Idea. It's just oil companies resorting to the easiest fuel to synthesise. Sad that truly advance fuel cells based on bigger molecules e.g. SOFC Ethane (1.28 grams per Litre @ STP) get soo little attention & development. I still think fuel cells are the future just not the tiny weak & unstable molecule that is H2.

How big is the tank? because natural gas tanks are huge and take half the space that would be for your trunk. Also, can't wait for the Mirai Kuriyama version from Japan.

Toyota seems to be investing a lot of money in this car, and it costs heaps, Toyota shouldn't expect it to kick off in the first year of launch and possibly even after two years, we will just have to wait and see.

Nice Roy. Ya I'm still not sold on this either. I have to say I am still far more impressed with Elon Musk and his Tesla vehicles. Soon he will have a Vehicle on the road pushing 500 miles on a charge. Not only that its a great looking car that can out perform most cars on the road. Also note that this hydrogen fuel cell vehicle will cost around $50 to fill up. Gas is led than $40.00, electric is around $4.00. That's right Four dollars . So let me get this straight you're going to spend about $50,000 for the vehicle and you're going to spend more to fill the tank up then you would for gasoline and way more than electric. How is this good for the consumer. Big thumbs down for this technology.

Now we have to know who gets more per mile, electric or hydrogen. Could we use that hydrogen to produce power for the electric car and get more range than hydrogen alone? I can understand that Toyota is closing the gap for alternative fuels but i want the math answered. Maybe we could even use the hydrogen to replace coal plants and produce the energy needed for electric cars.
@MrRoyRichardson
@MrRoyRichardson 9 лет назад
The electricity needed to generate the Hydrogen from natural gas (where most of it comes from) is about the same as used by an electric car - so it is still a hydrocarbon car

Shannon Morse Hydrogen is not the future. It is abundant on Earth but not in the form you need it and you need to put in lots of energy to make it. It takes around 300kWh to create hydrogen needed to fill up Toyota Mirai (5 kgs), and Mirai can do 300 miles. With 300kWh, electric car can do 900 miles. Alternative is to make hydrogen from natural gas (95% of hydrogen is created today this way), so technically hydrogen is fossil fuel, and this process releases huge amounts of CO2. Natural gas mostly comes from fracking. So hydrogen does not solve environment issues.

Yup. Stuff is everywhere. Look at water: H2O. Yep, 70% of the planet is covered in stuff that is 1/3 Hydrogen. Planets like Jupiter have insane amounts of hydrogen, and the Sun is a giant Hydrogen fueled reactor.
@Serbo-Greek

So we can find hydrogen in sun or in Jupiter tu fill our vehicles... Oh, I see :P
@comradeklar5749

Karadjordje Trkulja right now, we can just take it out of ocean water. Hurts nothing, and it's effectively infinitely cleaner than fossil fuels, but eventually, yes, a century or so from now atmospheric mining on Jupiter will most likely be very lucrative.

tesla is more plausible as the car for the future once they put in the charging into the road like they are trying out in europe you will never have to recharge your electric car, so this hydrogen thing mite be cool and all i dont think its the future, plus Volkswagen is about to reveal there electric can with new battery tech and who knows maybe their charge can go 1000 milles before recharge is needed

Ha ha ha ha...... and where do you think they get that Hydrogen from? It's too expensive to split water, so they are reprocessing hydrocarbons..... IE crude oil or natural gas. I love the idea of hydrogen, but unless you build a bunch of nuclear power plants to generate the massive amount of electricity needed to split the water molecule (electrolysis) efficiently. That would be a hell no in California and or nationwide with this administration!!!! This is still a car that runs of "Fossil Fuels"... and gasoline already has the infrastructure in place. The dirty little secret is it takes 1 gallon (at $3/gal) of gasoline to move a normal car 20 miles, Hydrogen is about $8 per unit/volume to move the same size car 20 miles. Are you really going to pay that extra $5 per equivalent gallon of reprocessed natural gas......... by the way, we don't have the refining capability to do it in mass anyway without building more refineries and that's another hell no in California and the other 49 States too (last new refinery built was 1976)! This is dead on arrival, I'm sad to say! In a perfect world (with far less uneducated liberals) we would have breeder reactors generating 95% of our electric needs (like France), and very cheap hydrogen could be used for all our heating/air conditioning and cooking needs. You could either power your car lie a Tesla with very cheap electricity or with hydrogen like this. Fossil fuels would only be used for making plastic, lubrication, fueling aircraft and powering rockets. 1/500 of what we used today! This is what you get when the liberals control education in your country.... millions of uneducated people who can't think!
