I retired from a Toyota plant in the southern United States. Was there for 25 years. Worked in off-line repair for a couple of years. When you made a repair, you documented it on the computer, which tracked how often the same repair was made over time. Come to find out, once the computer counted a repair 'x' amount of times, it simply would stop counting them, making it appear the defect and repair weren't happening nearly as often as it actually was. Complaining about this to bosses was wasted breath. This is just ONE example of many.

Japan is cutting back its work force, you can see the lack of safety markings from inspectors in all their new vehicles made in Japan. After parts are made and assembled, an inspector comes by and marks that part with a magic marker, they used to have 2-3 inspectors for the same part, now just one. In case you ever wondered why tires would have 2-3 different color dots/marks on them and places under the hood. Each inspector would have a different color marker.

It's not necessarily the size of the engine, but the efficiency of the engine. It's how you choose to control the unwanted emissions that is the key. So far engineers are using smaller engines with turbos in an attempt to lower unwanted emissions. Remember the pollution control devices in the 70's? The automotive engineers have to come up with better solutions. The EPA has historically pushed legislation that mandated less emissions & better gas mileage. Without those requirements we may be back in the good old days with cars going super fast, but polluting more as well. Ever hear of Global Warming? That what pollution does to the atmosphere - traps the heat that we are feeling now.

I have a 2000 F350 Crewcab Dually with a 6.8l V10 and I get 11.3mpg while towing my 16k pound camper and I have pulled that camper with a brand new Ford 3.5 eco boost and Chevy 5.3l and both return 6 to 7 mpg. It just goes to show the efficiency of motors while not towing has gotten much better 24 mpg hwy but while towing it's still far worse than a vehicle specifically built to tow from 24 years ago an using a giant V10 returns an amazing 11.3mpg hwy making it extremely efficient while towing yet if your not towing it is extremely inefficient at 11.3mpg hwy unloaded. Makes me wonder if we strapped a modern 10 speed trans to an old V10 that it would not upset the industry with mpg numbers so much better than what we get now proving they make modern motors much less efficient on purpose as a result of the transmissions getting so much more efficient.

I've owned a few Toyotas over the years, and they have always put customers first. They are the only manufacturer I have dealt with that did. Imagine a manufacturer who pays for a repair on a vehicle with close to 100,000 miles on the odometer. They covered the cost to get a stripped exhaust manifold stud repaired with a Heli Coil and a new exhaust manifold. I didn't even have to ask for the repair. I went to the dealer to get an idea of how difficult it would be for me to do the repair and the service manager took care of everything. It was a $650 repair.

They don't have the problem with the Atkinson cycle engines but they do with the others? It seems to me that any engine manufacturer is going to have to clean out debris from the machining process regardless. So what are the other engine assembly lines doing that is escaping the twin turbo V6 assembly line? It makes no sense.
