Toyota's SkyDrive - the 1st human piloted "drone" is here

Tokyo-based SkyDrive, showed off a test flight of its SD-03 flying car model earlier this month in the Japanese city of Toyota.
We call it "drone" as it looks like one, but it's actually a human piloted flying machine.
The single-seat car, powered by a battery and four pairs of propellers, was lifted to six feet above the ground and hovered in a netted test area for about five minutes. Most significantly, the car had a pilot on board.
It was SkyDrive’s first manned flight with the SD-03 model. The company, backed by Toyota (the automaker), aims to turn the prototype into a two-seater commercial model by 2023. It’s the same timeline targeted by the Japanese government to roll out flying taxi service in dense cities like Tokyo and Osaka.
Right now, the SkyDrive model can fly for only five to ten minutes at a low speed of several miles per hour. The next step is to raise its speed up to 60 kilometers per hour (40 mph) and extend flight duration to 30 minutes. That would mean a capacity to fly nonstop for 20 miles, making the car a suitable candidate for exporting to other countries, CEO Tomohiro Fukuzawa said.
Toyota Skydrive is a VTOL.

Actually there have been a couple of flying cars in the states , since i think the 60's . But none have been commercially viable . They are full of problems , mainly concerns over maintenance , and the question of licencing . In the past a full PPL was required , but many never achieved certification to fly . Those that did gain certification , only two as i recall , had severe restrictions placed upon them regarding weather and airspace . I wouldn't get your hopes up to much , my guess is should they enter the market place , they would be priced beyond the reach of the majority of people . Cheaper versions simply wouldn't get certification .

"Human piloted drone" Something is wrong in that statement
@musikSkool
@musikSkool 3 года назад
Yes. Remote controlled quad-copters started to be called drones because the military was using them to kill people in Afghanistan. What made the military quadcopters "drones" was they were automated and flew for hours without a person touching the joystick. It would be more accurate to call this vehicle an octa-copter because it has 8 rotors. But if it has a pilot and its autopilot system is used far less of the time than human control, then it is absolutely not a drone in any way, shape or form. It would be more accurate to call commercial flights "drones" because they fly themselves for 99% of the flight, than it would be to call quad-copters "drones", when 99% of the time there is a human controlling them. Rant over.

Always interesting to see new concepts being developed. A time when we can truly see flying cars as a common sight, will be somewhere in the next 50 years or so I am guessing. Will require a lot of R&D but will eventually happen. I still remember the star trek series from 50 years ago, where Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock used to call out to Scotty to beam them up via the Transporter device. Going by the current waves of technology, I think that too might be a possibility in the next 100 years or so. :)

@nickybritain4900
@nickybritain4900 3 года назад
If there is an engine failure on a helicopter it can usually land relatively safely by ‘auto rotation’. If one motor fails on a six or even an eight engined drone the imbalance would not allow a stable landing. The thing would go out of control and probably land sideways.

You know I noticed something about aircraft in general... they tend to "sink" to the bottom of Earth's air ocean very rapidly because air is much thinner than water and humans and craft don't float on it very well. Only balloons and clouds. So.. those old fashioned "wings-and-tail" appendages they had on those original aircrafts really can't be done away with quite yet.

I hope that one day in the future, this is the new type of car. Meaning a larger version of this that you can put stuff in a boot area at the back, you basically get in and fly yourself into town to the supermarket or something, and car parks are basically just a bunch of these mini helipads. Of course for safety you need to also implement an ejector system in case a person loses control, they can eject and survive. You would also have to have some semblance of a virtual highway in the sky, where you fly on the right side or something like this, and oncoming fly on your left side. You could even have little floating light virtual road markers up in the sky, that basically run off a solar panel and a batter and just hover in place to indicate the virtual road you should be on.
@thedudeabides3138
@thedudeabides3138 3 года назад
Once the ejection has triggered, the now “about to crash land” coptor deploys an all encompassing inflatable shield (like what NASA have already done and if you’re not familiar, you’d have seen it in that naff Val Kilmer movie where he was on Mars), thus mitigating casualties on impact.

Nice. It's a quad copter, not a drone. :) I've been flying RC model versions for years (and they can exceed 180kph). For suburban/confined usage it needs some bump protection on the outside of the props (partial guards). Also it has to have MUCH stronger landing gear. Not the first, there's also others under development.
