For the record, this extra complexity is worth about an extra 40 horsepower and 2000rpm to the power band, which is huge on a 110ci (1.8L) engine.

Two cams in one engine has been the dream of Hot Rodgers since modern Valve Timing was introduced to modern engines. TČhe first attempt was made by Rhoads Lifter company that made special hydraulic valve lifters that bled off pressure at lower RPMs allowing thend came the varicammsystem which changed the advance or retardation of the timing the came to provide different duration as the RPM. Now we have this system which changes the timing events of the camshaft by advancing or retarding of the valve lift under different Rpm Ranges the engine will see during its changes in speed. If you put all of this together and you’ve got electronically actuated valves. What a great system from a performance standpoint and koninsegg already uses. Soon other exotica super cool cars will too!

VTEC was there first and is utilised in far more models than Toyota's VVTLi. Toyota doesn't have many engines like the 2ZZ-GE whereas Honda has lots of modern performance engines, all using the VTEC system.

@@bradcogan8588 Yamaha left the VVTL-i system and went to VVT-i on the 3SGE BEAMS. And as you know, the BEAMS is boss when it comes to Toyota 4 cylinder engines. But nothing comes close to the K series motors from the Honda motor corp. The K head design is something to behold and can withstand a significantly higher lift cam than any other 4 cylinder engine. Honda is best for 4 cylinder Toyota is best for 6 cylinder or 8 cylinder.

@bradcogan8588 3 года назад
@@razeenmeyer9728 ye although those BEAMS engines were later than the 2ZZ-GE, it is a 3S-GE which was a bit of a dinosaur at that time and I think implementing a lift system would be too difficult. Toyota and Yamaha didn't abandon it as they've implemented it on engines since, just didn't make sense to completely redesign the 3S-GE for the sake of lift whoch the engine wouldn't benefit greatly from anyway.

I have a 2006 corolla xrs with this 2zz engine. Whata a good maintenance list that I should have besides the engine/transmission oil?
@SVSportscars
@SVSportscars 4 года назад
We advise to check the liftbolts every major service or around the 40k miles. And replace if signs of wear. The later models don't wear as fast/bad as he old version. But it's a cheap insurance. Also while the valve cover is off, check for wear on the high lobes of the cams. The valve cover has a oil supply that sprays oil on the cams. Check if the line is not blocked (by blowing some air through the line and see if all holes are open.) and replace the little o ring on the oil feed line on the valve cover. Hope it helps.

@SVSportscars

Yes it's possible, mechanically it all fits without any problem. The main issue is that the ecu is of a different style compared to a ts. So you eighter need to rewire the harnesses in engine back and dashboard. Or rewire the wires for the ecu and get only the engine harness. Both are time consuming options. Unless you are attached to your Corolla it's better to just trade it in for a TS.

Yeison Alvarez what model is your '99 corolla? E11 or E12? If it's E12 it's an easy fit and should match all engine mount points as any other zz engine, if it's a E11 you might hav an issue with mount points as some E11's had a leanburn engine as opposed to the vvti zz engines even E11's with a zz engine might be different as the engine bay isn't the same as a E12 but it still may fit in. @nvl2691
@nvl2691 4 года назад
@@frasermate4729 Definitely worth selling the Lancer for. All of the knowledge I I comes from the internet - I have no experience with them whatsoever IRL so some facts may be wrong. As far as tuneability, just like the Honda B18 these are pretty highly strung from the factory. Fitting an intake, full exhaust and remap might grant you 5 hp. The most gains come from camshafts. With MWR Stage 3 camshafts, valve springs, high compression pistons revving to 9000+ rpm, you might see 240 to 250 crank hp. Add individual throttle bodies, and a 2.0L stroker and top of that, you could be pushing above 280 hp. These engines are expensive to tune naturally aspirated: just like the Honda B or K series. They sound great though. These aren't easy to boost either: the cylinder liners aren't made for boost and anything above 500 to 600 crank hp (obviously with forged jnternals) becomes risky. If you wish to go above 600 crank hp, close the deck. Conclusion: if you plan on doing just some mild modifications, this might not be the engine for you. If you have a few thousands to spend, then you could get good power out of them. I would tell you, go for it anyways. From what I've heard, these are great cars, very enjoyable, and come on. 8250 rpm, how can you say no to that ? If I got one, first 2 mods I would do is upgrade the oil pump (the stock oil pump is underpowered: a few seconds of oil starvation is enough to ruin the engine for good), and fit a shorter final drive ratio. The stock Corolla TS (or Sportivo in Australia) tops 70 kmh in 1st, 110 kmh in 2nd and 150 kmh in 3rd. A shorter final drive getting you to 65 kmh in 1st, 100 kmh in 2nd, 137-138 in 3rd would be perfect. Slight effect on fuel economy, but it would really wake the car up. One of my dream project cars would be a turbocharged, 2ZZ MR2 Spyder pushing 900 crank hp. A supercar killer for sure. Tell me what you think.

It can be done but it’s not advisable because, if you had paid attention to the video.. it points out and shows that the purpose for extra lift and duration is to combat the turbulence associated with higher intake velocity. At lower rpm’s this is not an issue because the airflow is stable and flows just fine. Otherwise they would have designed the engine to run with the valves that far open 100% of the time. You’ll get little to no gains at lower rpm’s like that. Instead, look into other aspects that will improve engine performance

@@rolldog82 I mean disregarding the specs and how it makes more power easily the kseries engines are designed for performance and are designed really well. 2ar is just a big displacement economy engine for suvs etc

How difficult would it be to convert a vvti engine to a vvtli ?
@SVSportscars
@SVSportscars 5 лет назад
You can't really. It's not that you just add the lift part. The head is specifically deaigned for this purpose and does not fit on other engines.
@SaulTamalezX8
@SaulTamalezX8 5 лет назад
So custom head is needed

Eduardo Alvarez for turbo engines this is not very useful. In general the turbo will force air in anyway. Airflow etc is much more important in NA cars than Forced induction.

Borut Goli with these engines you are supposed to go well over 6000 it's build to be a high revving engine. And the short gears make it easy for it to do it. It's a sporty engine and not a low end torque diesel. It's all part of the charm of the engine.

Borut Goli but who would buy this car without revving it all the time? That's the whole point of the engine, that's the character of the car/engine.

@mohammedsalimahmed5230 6 лет назад
SV Sportscars agreed, also random question but im thinking of buying a Celica VVTL soon, what year would you say is the best? Some say 2001 is best performance wise as the Valve lift kicks in earlier and for longer, is this true? Others say 2003 is the most reliable?? It's confusing me :P
