Thank you very much. I'm in a 2016 Kia Soul. I just pulled in my drive way on a Sunday morning I've noticed this little button before but never really knew what it did. Your video explained it very well. My shift lock release is just above the Park. The cap literally reads SHIFT LOCK RELEASE. Thanks again.
Excellent resource. I waited for over 2 hours for the dealer to return my call, so I viewed the video. My 2019 Toyota Avalon Hybrid can now be pushed out of the garage and flat bedded to the dealer via AAA.
Do you need to keep holding it down when pushing the car ? I know you need to hold the button to shift into Neutral but once shifting into N do you need someone to continue holding it down or be hands free and push down again when ready to shift back into Park?
Hi Damian! Awesome question. You are correct that the button needs to be held down to shift to Neutral. Once the vehicle is in Neutral, you do not need to hold the button down. Of course, best practice would be to have a second person in the vehicle to apply brakes while you are pushing, but if you are alone and can move the vehicle off the road, you can do so once the vehicle has been shifted to Neutral. Hope this helps! Thanks for your comment :)
Thank you for the information. I have a question about Toyota starlet Xs auto. Is it possible to set the doors to lock automatically when you start moving, if so how does one go about it.
Hi Angela! Thanks for your comment. The Toyota Starlet is a vehicle that is not sold in Canada, so I am hoping the instructions I am giving will still work on yours! Press SETUP (or settings) then VEHICLE then DOOR LOCK SETTINGS. In this menu, you can set the doors to lock/unlock automatically, set the relock timer, adjust the feedback tones, etc. I sincerely hope this works!
Hi Zaid! The shift lock release is always very similar to the one in the video. The positioning sometimes varies among models, but it is near the gear shift and requires continuous pressure to be able to shift into neutral. The button you have is likely a different function- maybe a lock differential button? Thanks for your comment!
If the vehicle is running, you should be able to change the shifter from park without needing to press the shift lock release. If you are having issues with the shifter while the vehicle is running, it's best to have your local Toyota service department look at your vehicle.
Sir Im a new driver . Can I know about shifter button. When I press the shift liver P to newtrel there need to push shifter button.but when I move the gear liver drive to newtrel there I can to move with out pressing shifter button. Actually what is shifter button.!
Hi Savad! This is working normally. Typically, you are able to shift from D to N without pressing the brake pedal, which is why you do not need to activate the shift lock release in this case. The release is used to shift into Neutral in cases where you would not be able to operate the gear shift (ie. if the vehicle has a dead battery and cannot be turned on). Most people would use this feature to shift to Neutral so they can push the car into a safe spot off the road! Hope this helps :)
@@belletoyota Thanks for this info; I drive a 2019 Yaris and today at a stop light I accidentally hit the gear shift when moving my arm forward suddenly, and accidentally shifted from drive to neutral. I was concerned something was wrong, because I thought I needed to press the release shift release button to shift into all gears. I checked when I got home and was in the garage with the car running, and found I need to push the shift release to go from Park to Reverse, but *not* from Reverse to Neutral, and *not* from Neutral to Drive, or from Drive back to Neutral. If I am understanding correctly, this is all normal. If I am missing anything, please advise. Thank you for your time (and for the video).
This sounds like something you would want to have your local dealership take a look at for you. We would recommend booking a service appointment to have this checked out.
The shift lock always engages every time the vehicle is put into park and turned off to ensure the shift gear can't get accidentally shifted/moved causing the vehicle to roll/move. If a vehicle does not get driven or turned on for a while, the battery will drain, and if the vehicle can't be turned on the car will not disengage the shift lock. The only way to release the shift lock if the vehicle can't be turned on is to either boost your battery, or if that's not possible to follow along the video showing how to release the shift lock manually.
Depending on the year and model of your Toyota, as well as the cause of the lock, it is best to contact your local Toyota dealership and have the service department take a look at your vehicle.
What about prius i have 4th generation , i cant switch to p position cant start event becouze working only two modes akccesory and ingnition i cant change to on mode can somone help i see on my dash shift manualfunkcion
If you mean the small cover for the shift lock release, you can place it carefully in the same spot you removed it from just as Bronwyn does 2:50min of the video.
