@@you_can_fuck_your_own_ass_69 Absolutely no regrets. I have a daily as my 4 seater 2013 Honda Accord Sport original owner 116k miles. The Supra is just a special car specially for spirited drives in the canyons, highways, etc. Such an amazing handling car. The GR86 was also nice and would have fixed my itch for a sporty car, but I was discouraged after reading so much about the 2023 GR86 RVT potential issues. Not sure if the rvt issue will cause permanent damage or just simply exaggerated by the internet, but I didn't want to take my chances. Supra all the way. The manual shifting feels like butter in the Supra. Get it or test drive one and you'll see what I mean.

@@tone3560 I never drove a 2023 GR86 becuase I couldn't find one in my area to test drive. Kind of hard to drive it if I couldn't locate one nearby, but I'm sure they are easier to find now. I thought people freaked out too quickly, but I don't own one so my opinion is simply that.
In Australia a supra is $96k The gr86 $49k The brz $44k So i got the brz, and putting the extra cash towards an investment property Thank you for the video ive really enjoyed your gr86 comparisons to other cars
I have a 21 Supra, bought brand new, I DD mine. I’m currently at 45k miles. To me, it has enough trunk room for what I need. You’ll be surprised how much you can fit in a fastback. Fyi, my children are grown and are done with High School. So as a two seater, it fits my life style. I wouldn’t recommend it as a DD if you have small children.
I've had a GR Supra for a little over a year (3.0 premium - got it for ~$55k before markups went crazy) and it's been a blast. It gets a ton of attention everywhere I take it.
@@camokiller9119 I’m doing ok, six figure income and live in a state with low cost of living. I paid a lot up front so my loan payment is ~$400 a month. Also have a Tundra that I daily and my wife drives a Highlander.
There are lot of loan calculators for free. Unfortunately, cars got really expensive. Better off to keep your car expenses low imho unless you have a good salary.
I went through the same dilemma but hear me out, I went with a Camaro ZL1 with the 1LE track package. It's by far my favorite car of all time and that's coming from someone that's owned nothing but Toyotas ever since 2006. I still don't understand how Chevy made this masterpiece of a fun driving machine.
@@RicobacaI bought mine used for $59k. I don't think I could have bought a better car for that price. It hasn't given me any of the typical GM reliability issues but it's six years old now so perhaps it's too early to tell. Great video and I think there are some people that might be cross-shopping the two, mainly to see if they can save 25k by buying the GR86 instead of the manual Supra.
Except enjoyment and driving feedback. Supra has dull/numb steering, worse driving position, and feel disconnected to the road. Essentially the supra is overall and objectively a better car but it's not a more enjoyable driving experience unless you like going fast from 0-60.
@@shinn43 Depends what you want from a car. Will it be your only car, or multiple? And what is your commute like, do you actually live near twisty mountain roads? I don't, and I'm not in my 20s anymore, so I wouldn't buy a BRZ if it was going to be my ONLY car. It just feels cheap with all the road noise, cheap interior, and the way the motor sounds agricultural.
Objective performance (stopwatch), or sensory feel/engagement? Those are not the same. The GR arguably has a bit more of the latter, at least IME. Extremely tossable near the limits. Love both cars, and I’m actually considering between both ; but I think I need to first figure out which of my other cars it would be replacing . For my club’s time attack events, maybe pick the supra (maybe even pick the AT variant). but for just our twisty mountain backroads, I think I’d prefer the GR’s lightweight feel & rotation-happy personality , & also pocket the change…
@@MonicaHolly143 You get what you pay for. The Subaru feels like a cheap tin can compared to the Toyota. The doors, the dash, the plastics, the road noise, the paint quality, etc. And then there's the cold startup, when Subarus sound like frozen peas shaken in a pot.
Thanks for this ownership comparison, nice to see an unbiased perspective about daily usability. I’ve been cross shopping them, and the 86 is very attractive from a pricing perspective, and I love the styling/packaging of it. I tend to nitpick with ride quality, and I think the supra/bmw’s B58 engine sounds awesome with aftermarket exhaust, so still planning to go for the Supra manual. The waitlist continues 😅
Hey buddy, I'm also cross shoping them two. I'm looking for a second-car track toy that is reliable and I don't really care about the daily usability. For that the gr86 sounds like a better deal. The wear on the track might be immense and maintaining a BMW seems like it would eat into my wallet too much. Manual Supra is a sweet car, but the waitlist is too long and the b58 is almost 2x the power of the gr86. But it also costs double the price. I've also heard the supra is not as compliant on the track as the gr86.
To each his own, but Eric, you have 90k invested in the Supra and gr86. For 75k I have a gr86 and a 981 boxster s…..both with manuals. Both under 3,000lbs…..that’s light….3,500lbs is not really what I’d call light (even by todays standards) Good review and salient points- thanks
@@revmatchtv - I know those are the sweet spot for many, but the shift linkages seemed played out in a couple I drove. Perhaps that’s a short shift kit away from restoration, but I liked the idea of being a little newer with the 981 chassis. Enjoy your stable of cars!
Thanks for doing this video. Im currently deciding between the two because of the price. I understand I can turbo the GR86 and still come out ahead in price but the temptation of the I6 and more refined ride is real.
I live in Japan and if you want to have fun with a car or bike, you need to buy the import models. I used to ride a bike: a derestricted Yamaha FZR 1000 cc. I wanted a car and finally bought a Supra 6MT, without any limiter.
Indeed. You can make an 86 pretty quick, but the transmission can handle only so much torque before it begins to fail and of course you need to upgrade the brakes and wheels/tires. Not that this is a problem, you just need to budget for it.
@@MizzouRah78 Because what it offers is not what matters to me? Also reread my comment. If money is unlimited you could obviously buy both. If money is no issue you can buy a Bugatti instead.
@802 Garage Sorry, I'm the analytical type. What you're saying doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. I'm confused as to why you said to reread your comment. There's nothing confusing about it, and I didn't miss anything. You didn't even mention money being unlimited. That being said, your point is rather moot because you said what the supra offers isn't what matters to you. Considering what it offers is namely superior quality and power, why would you go for a Bugatti? The logic doesn't follow.
It's a street in the game, definitely a place where my flat is. Street parking rules may be changed giving a priority for e-cars, because it's same game street. Such a nice vacation trip highway.
Actually it's a 10 second job. Just pop off a panel and pull the plug. I'll show it in a future video. I leave it on because I can hear the engine noise better through my helmet when I'm on track. I agree it's WAY better with the sound off!
as a long term driver of a 94 probe gt, the sounds of these 4 bangers are pretty hard to swallow..add to that, the fake noise laid On top of it and it would be a deal breaker for me...I love the smoothness, sound and drama of a 6 cyl coming into its midrange and winding out to its top end... as far as the supra, what a car! but its interior fake engine noise sound pretty bad to me as well..I'd be snipping wires to turn that off! its outside exhaust notes are killer but you can't roll down its damn windows to enjoy them!
Have you seen Hello Road's purple Probe? It's pretty rad and he recently got it running again. I turned off the fake engine noises in the Supra. You can do it with an app.
Growing up in the 90s and 2000s, the guys wanted paddle shifters. Now they want manual. The wanted transmission is always the more expensive option it seems
Nice work. I can't recall if Toyota has put the MT into the Supra 2.0, but I 'm assuming you are testing the 3.0 here. I would be curious to see how the Supra 2.0 with the 8-speed automatic compares to the GR86 (either transmission). It would be a bit closer on price. I think you'll like the Borla exhaust. Not sure which one your are getting, but I've had the Borla axle back on my '17 BRZ for almost 5 years now, and have no complaints. The stock exhaust was a bit tame for my tastes, and the Borla adds some fun, plus lets your hear to rev match. It is pretty non-intrusive at highway crusing speeds too. No droning. The axle back was an easy bolt on swap. Have fun! I envy the power of the new gen GR/BRZ. My '17 is the Limited with Performance Pack, which is proving to be a great addition. This package added the SACHS dampers, slightly wider wheels, and the Brembo brake package (for $ 1200 on top of the Limited). The ride is suprisingly compliant given the buttoned down performance in the twisties. But it is almost never harsh. Waiting for them to offer some packages for this next gen. They seem slow to get these out. Finding the new gen on dealer lots in my area is still challenging.
Can you elaborate on the improvement in steering feel over your 2020 supra? I drove a 2021 on some tight backroads and had to hold back due to the typical numb bmw steering. How much better is the steering on the 23?
I agree with the conclusion. My favorite thing about the twins is that you can actually ring them out, day to day, and not end up without a license. I also much prefer the styling of them. That back end of the Supra is amazing but that front end is disgusting.
great video! question: in switzerland the gr86 sits at 42k. the supra 2.0 at 52k. supra 3.0 at 64k. i guess with this condition, the 2.0 is the right choice? want to take long trips in europe, and have a lil fun. no tracking
2023 Supra has much improved steering feel vs earlier versions. I have a lot more experience with the 2023 GR86 though because I own it. I'd say it's a toss up, but I'd probably give the edge to the 86.
When you opt for the MT you lose the entire safety suite that Suburu offers in the BRZ! Thankfully an editor of an auto enthusiast magazine thoroughly dissected the differences in suspension & I preferred the BRZ for all the reasons people wanted the Toyota that being easier to break loose the back end; FWIW Toyota made no changes to the front end suspension components; same as previous iteration. Imagine in the midst of COVID a dealership offered $1,750 off of MSRP on a special order /lease for loaded top of the line model when every store in town, regardless of brand, was asking 6K over sticker. It has .99 on the skid pad; previously all my cars were SS Camaros every 3 yrs; more fun in this! (Was afraid it would be a lose lose proposition; less hp less torque smaller tires but I was wrong).
@@80s_Boombox_Collector the Subaru safety system includes the auto crash avoidance that is so good it couldn't be scored for front end collision safety. It had to be disabled to purposely crash the car. That's literal life saving tech.
I think there's some RU-vid processing error on this one. I film most everything at 24fps except the gimbal shots which I film at 120, but there's some stuttering near the beginning of the video.
Right now my only real problem with my GR86 is that it ultimately doesn't sound very good and that's a big flaw for a sportscar. Considering that you need to rev out the engine to even catch up with the traffic, the buzzy rattly sounds that the motor makes get boring and tedious pretty quickly. I tried turning off the active noise, but it basically replaces the buzzy sound with a faint chainsaw noise that's not much better. This is all a shame because the rest of this car is so damn good.
I just purchased a Borla exhaust based on my friend's BRZ Borla purchase. It fixes the problem and it's not too loud (my big concern). I'll do a quick install video in the next few weeks.

Toyota and Subaru don't want the twins to cannibalize sales from other models is the simple answer. Same with Porsche and the 911 vs Cayman. However, I'm personally fine with a lower cost vehicle. More power means more weight for bigger brakes, suspension components, additional cooling etc. I really value low weight.
@@revmatchtv Yeah for sure. Is it reliable where you only have to do oil changes and its still fine? Or do you have to do much more for basic maintenance? Thats why i want japan made toyotas because of that. Subaru is still japanese and reliable.

@1Solace Anyone who claims it's not more fun is either biased, delusional, or doesn't care about performance. To any true enthusiast, HOW would the supra NOT be more fun? It makes no sense whatsoever.
Boy I’m tired of people trying to downplay driving dynamics like it’s something that’s completely irrelevant, but talk up horsepower and 0-60s like that’s the only factor that makes a sports car. “Oh, it can’t beat xyz at a red light so its not a real sports car”. These people lack critical thinking skills.
0-60 sells, but handling is where the thrills are. I did a video on the dynamic difference between the BRZ and 86: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jWTn9AgowPs.html
funny every one of you so called journalist talks about how the shifter is so great vs. the bmw, but you don't talk about the suspension vs. the bmw. Also that shifter sucks compared to many cars, stop pretending otherwise.
If you watched, I said the BMW has a better shifter and I did discuss ride quality in this video including my thoughts on the valving and dampers. I made an earlier video, more in depth discussing both cars in the canyons. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BOTijpnBms0.html I've compared the GR86 to quite a few cars so far including a 9111.
New BMW 2 series is often compared to this car. I passed on 2 series because it’s a Lexus type ride compared to 86. 86 feels like a true sports car Very low center of gravity and you feel the road and it’s not soft like a modern BMW. Shifter is good, tight. This car can be stressful to drive on busy roads when you’re tired because of the noise level and always trying to push the car because it wants to constantly be pushed. 86 is young persons sports car. This car can be driven hard and you don’t have to worry about cost of ownership.
The fake engine noise is there for a purpose I think, besides trying to sound sporty. It actually lets you know the rev because without it, the car is sooooooo quiet you can’t hear the engine or the exhaust until above 4k rpm. Unless you swap on a tomei, other aftermarket catbacks do very little to extract any sound out of this car. That’s coming from my personal experience in a BRZ with STI catback and HKS catback.
The Supra is similar. It's very quiet on the inside. Still decided to program out the engine speaker noise with bimmercode though. An aftermarket exhaust (or even just a downpipe) will really wake it up.
The reason you can't hear the engine in the BRZ (I think you're exaggerating) is because it gets masked by all the road noise these cars have. The other issue is, it's spinning at 4K rpm at only 85 mph. I don't understand why it needs such a short top gear, when you consider that most people would downshift to pass anyway.
@@80s_Boombox_Collector I’m definitely not joking about the inaudible engine/exhaust sound. My 2012 sti was really audible even in complete stock form, granted it has a different engine with UEL headers. But I‘m just saying it’s one of the most quiet sports car that I have driven in recent years. I agree the brz has terrible wind/road noise with windows down!
100% true, when I'm cruising and have the radio on with the fake noise off I can hit up past 4k and sit there never realizing for long periods, not trying to hang that high. I turned the noise right back on. However. I'd love the ability to change or have a customizable noise. So who out there is going to produce us some sound chips? :D
I like both cars but ended up with an A91-MT Supra (one of the 1/500 special editions). It's a nicer car overall for a daily driver. I'd still like to pick up a GR86 eventually, but I already had an S2000, and finding a GR86 for MSRP has been nearly impossible for the last year or so. I decided to build my S2000 as my track car for now. The Supra can be really great on track too (check out Jackie Ding's time attack Supra, in auto), but, for me, it's too new/nice/expensive to be a heavily modified track car at this point in my life, and it would be worse on consumables on track. I'm keeping it as a nice, fun, comfortable daily driver street car for the foreseeable future. Ironically enough, the 8HP auto trans Supra might actually be the better performance car vs the manual. It shifts almost as quickly as the DCT in previous gen BMWs. But the manual is more enjoyable for a street car/daily driver. The manual is largely still in the unknown category when you get into performance mods though. We don't know how much power it can take, and there still really aren't aftemarket clutches available for it yet, whereas the 8hp auto can be upgraded to handle 800hp pretty easily (as we can see already on many time attack and drag cars). I will say I am still very interested in trying a C8 Corvette at some point though.
The manual ECU is not tunable. The only way to “tune” it is via a piggyback device. Personally I think it has a nice amount of power and it feels quick with the lower final drive vs the auto.
@@revmatchtv It is tunable, but it's locked from the factory. It can be unlocked by a company in Finland called Femto. I forget the name of the company, but there's a company here that has a guy physically fly out to Femto in Finland once a month to bring them DMEs in person (to make customers feel safer about having the DME from their brand new car taken overseas).
@@justsomerandomguyman Just going to add that any reputable shop can have a relationship with Femto and ship directly. I did with my local tuner here for my '22 Supra unlock and tune.
@RevMatchTV I just don't understand how that can be your honest opinion. The supra is better in every performance related metric...how does that not equal more fun? Lol
@@MizzouRah78 I have a model y performance and a 23 BRZ. My tesla will smoke my BRZ in just about every way, but it is fun driving a slow car at 9/10s vs a fast car at less than half of its ability
@@MizzouRah78 Not every performance metric. It weighs 500 more pounds. That means if you really put some money into the BRZ/GR86, like a turbo setup and a big brake it, it could potentially be a better track car. But, yes, stock vs stock, the Supra has a way better engine. The engine is the one weak point to the BRZ/GR86. You do really feel the extra 500 pounds in the Supra though. It's noticeable.
The Gradysix is everything I wished the old Toyota Celica was. The Celica caught my attention around 2000 with that design that looked great at the front but turned into a rectangle at the back. This feature of the rectangular backside was a fatal flaw for me, I hated it so much. But this car has a great look all over and in the interior as well.
If I want supra like powertrain I would buy used last gen M2 CS. I bought BRZ though and so far I'm loving it. I would probably look into the C7 manual Corvette next.
Thanks for the great video. I debated between the 86 and Supra and decided on the GR 86 Halo Premium. I bought it purely for fun and will drive my F150 in the winter and BMW X2 on longer road trips.
If you’re debating on which to the get… Supra vs the 86… then you never wanted or can’t afford the Supra. Not in the same price point. Don’t even know why it’s even being compared here.
@@ChowderTIO your point being is bc you have an expensive truck, so therefore you can easily afford a Supra? I’d actually think it’s the opposite, especially if you’re still making payments on that truck.. fact is, most Americans can’t afford to buy a Supra, especially as they are being sold marked up. So no shame if you can’t afford it. The Gr86 doesn’t compare to the Supra. Period. It’s like comparing a boxster to a 911 turbo. This video comparing the two is just weird. They’re not in the same price range. Supra is just the better car between the two without a doubt. To say that you’re debating between the two, implies you’d actually consider them being comparable… when they’re not. No one would actually choose an 86 over a Supra.
@@theojk part of the decision was based on availability. It’s been almost a year but I wanted a white manual and couldn’t locate either a Supra or 86 in my area. The Supras that were available were not manual, which was a must. I had to drive a few hundred miles to get the 86. Also, I get what you are saying as the Supra is a higher end vehicle.
“A quick review” …. Nearly 15 minutes later. 🤦🏼♂️ a quick review would be the Supra is like 20k more car. But the “BRZ” looks better and is really fun. There that would take like 2 minutes, that would be a “quick video” 😏😁😁
My problem with the 86 is.. it’s no Honda s2000. And you can get a decent s2k in decent condition/miles for about $25k (right now). Comparing it to the 86, The s2k is (IMHO) better, pretty much in every department, including the “feel” factor you get when on the road, which is the main appeal to the 86. The Honda is just more visceral in that regard. I gladly paid slightly over MSRP for a white 2024 GR premium Supra in manual, and even if it’s over twice the price of the 86, I still see more value and car for the money, in the Supra. There’s just no comparison.

That’s idiotic to buy a used 25 year old car for 25,000 dollars and pretend like it’s fiscally responsible
I could see cross shopping these two cars. The cars I on my list to consider were GR86, Supra, Mustang Mach 1, Corvette, Nissan Z. The negatives for each are: Corvette - No manual transmission option anymore (thus not appealing anymore), Toyota Supra - Actually a BMW. Thus BMW reliability and BMW maintenance costs (thus not appealing), Mustang Mach 1 (only major negative is they won't be around much longer and the 2024 Mustang Blackhorse looks nowhere near as good), Nissan Z - Don't really like the front with the giant rectangle grill. GR86 - Wish they could make it a little more powerful w/o compromising weight, not sure about Subaru engine reliability, and backseat is smaller than Mach 1 (I view back seats as not a requirement, but a positive). I don't care about most technology in new cars. I want something fun to drive (light weight goes a long way to fun to drive), with good looks, and reliable as possible. The GR86 seems like a pretty good fit. I really like that it is about as simple of a car as you can get today. You don't need super expensive suspensions and brakes when you have a very light weight. The Mustang Mach 1 is also very appealing, though it is heavy. Those two are really the only two I would have interest in when I end up needing a new car.
I've considered most of those things as well. I bought my Supra in 2019, and the GR86 in 2022, but honestly I really, really enjoy the 86 because it's so engaging to drive, despite not being perfect. It checks most of the boxes, and it's pretty cheap to operate. My next move is installing the Borla exhaust to fix the sound issue.
Bmw makes a good motor and I’ve heard multiple times that Toyota did a great job with the shifter but I don’t care for the exterior design of the Supra. More importantly I prefer a sports car that’s light vs heavy….regardless of 0-60 times.
What is this car faster than? I keep hearing its fast but not that fast. I keep hearing its a great performance car. But what does it outperform? I heard someone said it wont win any races 😢 what the hell
At it's price point, you're looking at a Miata as the main competitor. The Honda Civic Si is much slower power wise. On track, the 86 is quite fun and not terribly slow at all.
@@revmatchtv so it's just a car that "acts" like a sport car through handling and sporty geometry? But can't hadle the job of a true high priced performance car? In other words it's an amateur "sport" car that has no extra tweaks and powers like the higher end monsters.
Unfortunately, these two aren't real Toyota sports cars. The Supra is basically a rebadged BMW Roadster and and the GR86 is a rebadged Subaru Sports car. So I wouldn't pay much on either of the two. I can also imagine if Toyota brought back MR2, that will basically be a rebadged Porsche Boxster.
The GR86 isn't a rebadged subaru sports car, it was a joint venture. If you've read the development story of the GT86 it's a full JOINT venture from both Subaru and Toyota. Product planning, engineering design objectives/targets, concept and approach attributed to Toyota Development and production, and components to Subaru. Without Toyota, Subaru couldn't ever make a sports car like the BRZ. Without Subaru, Toyota would've abandoned making this sports car or taking a substantial amount of time to develop an engine that fits the design objectives/criteria (low centre of gravity). All in all, don't hate joint ventures/collaborations, its pursued to offset manufacturing and R&D cost that would've eitehr drive the price of these vehicles ALOT or taking an abnormal amount of development time.
What sports car did little old Subaru offer to Toyota to rebadge? The 86/brz is such a mismash of Toyota Subaru parts it doesn't even qualify as one or the other. The rear differential is from an old Toyota, the transmission is from a Lexus IS; the EFI system is Toyota's, the stalks are out of a Corolla. I mean you can just go on to see the parts bin special going on in the 86/BRZ. Meanwhile, the Zupra isn't a rebadged roadster since one isn't a roadster.... The Zupra is BMW parts modified to meet Toyotas quality specifications because we all know how BMWs electronics are finicky as hell. There was a deep dive article in the creation of the Zupra and its far from just rebranding a Z4.
This is the normie braindead opinion that everyone likes to give. The reality is neither of these cars would exist without the partnerships, and they are both great cars. The Supra is as rigid as a Lexus LFA and has a great engine that can make a ton of power with light mods. The GR86 has a great chassis. It's like a modernized Nissan Silvia S15 in terms of chassis design. What's the point of being a Toyota purist? A good car is a good car. (Although I can agree that the Subaru boxer engine leaves something to be desired.)
So wait, you'd pay more for the Supra if it was 100% Toyota, rather than a partnership with BMW? What makes you think a pure Toyota vehicle would be any better? The BMW motor is proven, and the interior quality and isolation is nice, probably nicer than what Toyota would have come up with alone.
