I've done it this way for a LONG time. BMW works the same way. I use a funnel because of the never ending wind here. I repeat doing this over a couple of weeks. No getting under the truck. I use a disposable syringe, I got box of the them I got from a relative

I just jammed a couple of inches of tube on the end of my turkey baster. Worked great.

On the 2017 tacomas its just a clear plastic canister that you can see how much fluid is in it without a top cap dip stick. How often you change yours out never had to change power steering fluid just add on previous vehicles I owned.

…apparently the shop I had my power steering flush done poured in regular PS fluid instead of ATF fluid. It’s not pink/red, it is yellowing clear fluid. …and I can’t find full flush video so can you post link to it??

The power steering reservoir on almost all Toyota’s with hydraulic power steering have a filter screen on the bottom and if you have the time it makes a huge difference to take it completely off and clean it out. When I did it I got a drastic change in how much force I had to turn the steering wheel, got that one finger steering back.

Where is the motor cover? Great video, i did it a few times over the last year and it is pretty easy, I used a transfer pump and it was very easy. I went with mobile 1 ATF synthetic. i read in the forums it works wonders and I haven't had any issues.

Oh I took the cover off a while back. Dirt was still easily getting under there from wheeling.

I think a full system flush is recommended every 30k, so you could do this "refresh" every time you change your oil to keep on top of it.

Jack the front end off the ground. Suck out old fluid fill with fresh. Start engine turn wheels all the way left and right a few times. And repeat a few times.

Michael J Fox could have done better.... LOL... Done similar with the wife's Rav4. My 2013 only has 20K miles, so not necessary yet. Looking forward to the complete flush.

Does anyone know what the OEM power steering fluid is? Even if it is ATF? Everyone is putting dexron 3 and its red but the factory fluid in my power steering chamber is light green.. My friend is a mechanic for BMW and he said to look further into it before I put in a completely different colour fluid into the system.. Even if it is just a dye.

Great video, great tips. Yesterday on my 2012 the power steering just felt wrong and had pockets of resistance. No noise from the pump, but fluid smelled burnt. Time for a fluid change, right? Pump still fine? What do you think? Thanks!

@@Tacomaholic thanks for the response. I tried to flush the system. It is barely cycling. Would have taken 2 hours to flush it all. I think the pump is starting to go.

Figured it out. That weak u joint along the lower intermediate steering shaft was seizing. I found a thread online about it. Spray penetrating oil and flush the joint thoroughly. Let sit for 15 min. Then spray lubricant over the joint liberally. Worked. Maybe this will be routine maintenance on my Tacoma.

@@Tacomaholic Yes! Just like new! You could do a video on it. From what I can tell it's a common problem. Beats replacing the part. Search: Tacoma stiff steering. It will come up on Tacoma forums.

Yes alot of vehicles use some form of trans fluid for power steering as well (Dexron II or III for Tacomas)

A lot of late model vehicles actually use trans fluid in the PS system. Double check your owner's manual to find the exact one for your vehicle. 👍

You're just mixing the new fluid with the old fluid from the system the moment you turn on the engine.

Yeah, so the fluid overall is in better condition than it was before because of the new fluid.
