if you don't have a spare under the bed you can pour most of it directly into the diff housing using the spout on the gear oil container. it's why those spouts are included on the bottles. oh yeah, for the gear oil to flow smoothly, just spike the bottle at the back, like shotgunning a beer.

Just a comment/question. The local Toyota Dealer here does not recommend using a Synthetic in the rear diff on the TRD with limited slip Diff. They use non synthetic GL-5 with one bottle of Ford XL-3 friction modifier when doing changes. They did say ok to use synthetic in front diff and transfer case. Your thoughts or experiences with rear diff LS clutches chattering?
@Tacomaholic
@Tacomaholic 5 лет назад
There might be some info about that on TW but often dealerships will say things like that to get you to buy their fluid.
@TearDropTravels
@TearDropTravels 5 лет назад
They weren’t trying to sell me anything, I know the parts guy. He told me to just get the Ford friction modifier at the Ford Dealer, less than $10 and use any GL5 non synthetic I wanted. I normally use Lucas gear lubes. No need to buy expensive Synthetic. Does your truck have limited slip and Diff Loc? Mine is a 2015 TRD OFFROAD

Do not spend time trying to refill from the bottom. Same thing applies for transmission. Fill from the top. Get a length of heater hose - put a small 3-4" tube in one end - clamp it tight with hose clamp - feed it down to the refill hole - then stick funnel in the other end - hose slung over the top of the rear tire - pour in gear oil slowly - pull up just a hair on the funnel to create a vent for better flow
@Tacomaholic
@Tacomaholic 5 лет назад
Yeah I won't be using the pump next time for the rear diff. PITA. The trans fill hole area is pretty tight though so the pump might be needed for that.
@MR-nz5pg
@MR-nz5pg 5 лет назад
For the A750E/A750F auto trans - use a 70" length of 5/8" OD 1/2" ID clear vinyl hose. Fits nice and snug into the refill hole - no slipping out. Refill from the top under the hood - same deal as diff - funnel. See post #29 in this thread - 5th Gen 4Runner - but same transmission used in that vehicle as 2nd Gen Tacoma. www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/186930-transmission-temp-check-mode-2.html

That's what I wanted to hear about. Isn't that spare tire mechanism crazy? I am going to put 4 quarts of gear oil in a tub of hot water first, connect hose to the bottle, invert it and insert the hose end into the fill port. @@michaelmisiaszek2514 putting bottles of oil in a tub of hot water is weird. Hot water will build pressure in those sealed bottles, probably not enough room under your truck to do that anyway, just get a pump, it's not a marathon of who's quickest, and it's alot less mess.

Just a small pro tip. Where some cheap nitrile gloves. Saves you having to clean our hands with all of that oil on them. Also if no one has said so, you can get a drill pump, which is a cheap siphon pump that you connect your drill to and drive it that way. Simple and easy. And one more thing if you think about it. I think Fumoto makes a drain valve for the differential, so putting one of those on there to do small oil quality tests without having to drain the or open the differential helps too.

I looked into seeing if Fumoto makes a valve for the diff. They don't and not one I can see. However, you could put a threaded adapter to tie in a Fumoto into the diff, but I think that would stick out so far as to be impractical. Especially if you go offroad. It might even be impractical even if you don't now that I really think about it. Okay, NVM. Forget I even mentioned it. Lol.
