After going and reading on what You added. Mine has 344,??? mostly curb side. I have seen 04-08 both sidea and bad. All the hand to hand prepping we did every fall when we were just a little younger was cosmetic compared to what I have learned over the last couple years. Rusting from the inside out. Now one of the shows can't remember Washington State or Minnesota the Gentleman Mentioned that there was a Recall for frame repairs. Sequoia, and Maybe Tundra and Tacoma. No 4Runner Dealer said that there's to many. I think that's what I heard... Mostly I am on late at Night Focused on the 2000 4Runner. Water pump 2 + Years ago was Re-Educating... Gotta love good old Toyota rust rot. Most guys don't realize that Toyota has had serious rost rot problems since the 80's. The 1st gen Tacoma had such terrible rust rot that Toyota was legitimately concerned that the US gov was going to force them to issue a recall. When the 2nd gen was announced, all the Tacoma fans said "yeah the 1st gens have frame rust issues but Toyota fixed it with the new frame the 2nd gens have". The 2nd gens still had terrible rot, right in the areas we see here. It's partially the design of the frame and how it holds muds, leaves, and salt. It's also partially the fault of Toyota and their supplier. Toyota claimed they had no idea the frames weren't made to spec, but that's impossible. Toyota sees the complaints for frame rust. Toyota has a quality control department that inspects all parts, monitors patterns of issues, and audits their suppliers to make sure they are made to spec. They did absolutely nothing for decades about the frame rot. We'll see how the 3rd gen Tacoma holds up. Supposedly they made changes but that internet claim has existed for as long as the internet and the Tacoma has been around.

I know it sucks it looks hurtin, and of course it’s not as strong as it once was, but that outer c channel on a frame like that is the thick one the inner c the rotten one is just thin. Helps make the frame ridgid. No hopp under any GM, ford, dodge and notice none have a boxed frame, and it’s not because of rust, it’s because it’s cheaper to not bother.

Fixed a few frames from cars, trucks, semis with double frame. Best patch is not 1 with square corners. So make a diamond shape with rounded corners. That way it's more sound and strong and don't look like a 1st graders art project. Kill rust with Ospho, etc then use weld through primer. Even if u can get to backside still use weld through primer. Few coats. that way if and when rust tries to start it will eat up zinc in primer 1st. Good idea to use a master coat, Eastwood, rust bullet etc type paint with aluminium and zinc. Old farmer used aluminium paint for roof and I laughed but each time I change his oil, I look and looks new still almost decade later.

on this one the frame is open about 2 ft back I took air and blew it all out knocked on the frame with hammer to get and loose stuff from inside and blow out or if hole is big enough get a hose on shop vacuum and run it through the frame. then coat the inside as best as possible undercoating / rustolium flood it with the stuff don’t cut the whole frame out unless you have it secured in place where it won’t shift or twist the replacement piece is larger so it still needs most the old frame to slip over and weld to for strength

Most frames are repairable by a competent welder. I prefer tig. Avoid big patches like this that cover things up and trap future moisture and salt. Go with patches, and you’ll be good to go. Make sure to use weldable primer, and rust prof the heck out of the frame afterwards, especially the inside. Use a good rust converter and fluid film.
