Both bolts go in from rear of the bell housing and was able to get them out of my 2003 2.4L stick shift using a box wrench and sockets. Got old starter out of bottom with difficulty after unmounting clutch cylinder but found it easier to go in from the top front putting the new one in as you did. Also had to add a nut to the 12v cable since my new starter had a thinner nut and the stupid ears on the side of the lug prevented me from being able to snug it. Thanks for posting that video! Should I take the positive side of the cable battery when replacing just to be safe or does the positive side need to be connected when changing the starter
Replaced started yesterday and it was impossible to remove it from top or bottom. Only way possible was to take it out from the side, inside the wheel well, had to undo the small bracket to the brake line to make some more room and even so it was so hard. Awful toyota design on the 1996 2.7l engine.
