Not sure why people keep comparing the Bison to the Raptor and TRD pro. Especially a race. Use a regular ZR2. Lighter. Quicker and a better direct comparison.
Agreed, the Bison has about 300 lbs more than the regular ZR2. It would probably help by a half second or so in the dirt drag race part. But in the baja part of the video it would help exponentially. Granted I wouldn't complain if they were to stick the 3.0tt from the old CT6. Where it had 404 hp and 400 lb-ft of tq.
@@rod7434 Trucks this size doesn't really need more than 400 hp. Power-wise it's on par with the Ranger Raptor. In just the regular ZR2 it would have almost a 400 lbs weight advantage over the Raptor.
EVERY reviewer has slept on the base ZR2. Fairly certain Toyota won't let them put TRD-Off Road against base ZR2, despite them being within $1k of each other once adding 8spd auto, predator steps, and bedliner to TRD-Off Road. That is standard base build on 24 Tacoma TRD Off Road before anyone tries to come at me with the "it's base is actually $42k...". The ZR2 base would have been a much closer race using Baja Mode launch control. The difference in powertrain is even smaller when you take into consideration the Colorado ZR2 comes with 3.43 gears, while Ranger Raptor has 4.27 gears. Why GM put such a lazy ratio in ZR2, let alone Bison, I don't know.
I’m sure someone already mentioned this but I’m too lazy to read all the comments…but as the owner of multiple Raptors (full size Raptors) the side steps are there to block gravel sized rocks from flying up and hitting your fenders and chipping your paint. Since most Raptor owners prefer high speed trails over rock crawling (as this is what the truck is designed for) the benefit of the steps protections your truck from flying rocks outweighs the drawback of lost clearance when rock crawling. So I would definitely not agree that these “need to come off immediately”. Just my two cents…
@@Roman-i4eCounter disagree. The new ZR2 Bision is a beast, but that "grocery getter" ran the Baja 1000 just like it's siblings. It's just a much more specialized truck. The Bronco is Ford's rock crawler.
Sorry. Having been in the tire biz for 27 years, I would NOT recommend going from a LR C to a LR E. It still only has THREE sidewall plies. They're beefier, but the reasoning for it is to hold more air pressure and carry more weight. On the road, you can't use that carrying capacity as it will exceed the suspension capacity. Also, running the LR E at lower air pressures will create more sidewall heat. And being heavier, the LR E will lower your gas mileage.
They're less likely to puncture on sharp rocks, which is the biggest reason I put an E-range KO2 on my Tacoma. It did lower the fuel economy, though, and the front end wanders on the freeway even though it's completely stock otherwise.
It looked like the ZR2 Bison was in 2wd mode on the drag take off. A lot of rear wheel spin. Also, that truck comes with launch control that wasn't mentioned.
Exactly my thoughts. I think the raptor would have still won but definitely made it fight with one hand behind its back. ZR2 had no need also to use any lockers at all.
The Bison was “SLOW”! Despite a terrible 2wd launch and 35” tires, it was barely behind the Tacoma… I think these videos are made with the winner already in mind.
She’s an automotive reviewer and it’s a video. It would be weird if she didn’t say much to explain the review of the vehicles. I’m glad we don’t get to hear you talk.
@@donebeforethespeedster ty for notating that “it’s a video”. Insightful. The real point is that she comes off as desperately trying to pretend she’s excited about this stuff and that she knows what she’s talking about. And together with all of her childish noises filling up every second of the video is annoying.
Call her what ever you want, she probably knows more about trucks than anyone here, she races too.. she’s an incredible automotive journalist, you’re just too thick to understand..
@@vincefairleigh6899doubt that, only sounds like someone reading a brochure to me. I’d take an actual owners word on these trucks over any journalist unless they’re solely for off-roading and Edmund’s definitely isn’t it.
This might be one of the most annoying reviews I've ever seen. Can we spend a few minutes talking like a normal adult who is actually buying these trucks?
Just picked up the zr2 bison colorado and did a 4k mile road trip to colorado and moab. Did hells revenge and fins and things with zero issues. This zr2 is incredible for a stock truck. We were towing a 4k trailer with a razer utv and the power for this 4 cylinder engine is amazing, tows great and pulls all the steep passes no problem at 70 mph. Only complaint on truck towing was the terrible fuel milage. 10.5 was average of 4k miles towing. We had a bad head wind for a bunch of the time and I did see 13.6 for a few hundred miles driving at 68mph with no head wind.
Great review. I don't know why people have to be sexist. Every truck review has guys yelling the whole time. She shows some enthusiasm for the comparison and guys are saying she's yelling and can't listen. People need to check themselves and leave their sexism at the door. This was an excellent review. Keep up the good work.
16:35 not sure why you would think that - this is a prime example of supply and demand - and they are selling well, with the exception of the Toyota. Even before price increases, new models and technology, none of these trucks would have been range for most folks.
@@TheMcdred not really there are not alot of bisons and there are very few pf them marked up its simply ford and toyota saying we know what we got no low balls even though they jacked up the price as a matter a fact i saw a bison for 58,000$ last week
I’m just going with ZR2… NOT THE BISEON. Only 49k which makes it move faster. And if I wanna go as fast as the raptor, I’ll put in bigger turbos, tune it up a little bit, and straight pipe it to sound better. ZR2 not Bison is hands down better bang for your buck. Getting heated AND cooling seats, vents in the back, physical buttons, in my opinion looks better. For the raptor your spending 10k more MSP probably 15k after markups just for the power train
Hopefully, that screen doesn’t fail in that Chebby like the Equinox junk, you’d be driving without lights at night. But at least your ass won’t be sweaty….
@@erikturner8687 it’s set to auto, and you can still use your high beams. So technically it’s not a big deal… but the Raptor has too much tech on there screen to where if that screen doesn’t come on your can’t make it hotter or cooler in the truck or turn on defrost
@Morg_-wu1kk Good luck with your ZR2, after the upgraded turbos and tune you will be near the price of the Raptor and stuck with a way inferior suspension and transmission.
ZR2 was in 2WD on the quarter mile... not saying it's going to be faster due to the lift and bigger tires.. but still.. your job is comparing trucks.. put them all in 4WD
As for the lady, maybe practice being a little less energic and control her volume. As for you mate, practice being a little more empathic to people ✌️
The TRD is like the vegan version of an offroad truck. Hats off to the Ford Performance Team on building a great midsize capable truck. Note: Recommending going to an E load tires isn’t a good idea. The C rated BFG is Percocet for the truck being a lighter weight and the suspension is tuned with that sidewall. The C rated tire is better with snow traction and has better grip offroad.
The C rated tire is better in snow at the correct air pressure. People putting 10 ply (E range) tires on these can't run the same air pressure. And I agree that airing down a 6 ply (C range) tire does less damage to the sidewall plies.
Results line up. The highest horsepower pulled the hardest at the top end. TRD pro as I suspected, is basically just the 4 cylinder after you've exited the low end part of the power curve where the torque-fill from the hybrid motor occurs
I don’t think the Ranger Raptor needs to change anything. It’s a Baja vehicle first and a rock crawler second. If you start putting a lift kit and bigger tires you’re starting to take away its strengths.
Since most Raptor owners prefer high speed trails over rock crawling ford decided to add those rails and make them steps as well. nothing needs to change about that truck
@@rowdyjoshy1798 And just like the F150 variant, those steps are intended to prevent rocks from flying up and damaging the paint. This is always overlooked by every reviewer
@@patana256 seems crazy I know. I own one and the launch control actually makes a huge difference. I’m not doubting the raptor is faster it has 100 more HP.
Rock crawling is the RR weakest link. That’s fine with me, as I don’t plan on doing any of that. I will drag race you Chevy or Taco on pavement, dirt or mud🤠
@@WeldonGage Weak link though, only for hard core crawling. With F&R lockers, it'll go anywhere it's clearance will allow. Plus she complained about lock up speed, when I've heard many reviewers PRAISE how quick Ford's lockers work !!
Long before reviews like this came. I told my son who wanted the new Tacoma to go for Ranger Raptor. Better bang for the buck and seem to have the edge in most stuff. And the areas it gives up to others can be easily fixed with bigger tires and slight lift. Off-course, he argued about reliability. But he doesn’t realize this Tacoma is all new. And has turbo engine, different transmission etc. So you can’t really go by the reliability of last version.
So you pointed out that the "35" inch tires on the Bison are really only 34.4 inches. Go look up the specs of most 35-inch tires. They are all below 35 inches in reality. The BFG KO3 in 35x12.5R17 is actually only 34.5... that's normal, industry wide. Only a very small minority of tires actually come close to being true to size. Nitto is one of the few that come close, but not quite advertised size.
From day one, I knew those low-hung sidesteps were a poor decision by Ford. They will be the first thing I remove and replace with frame-hugging rock sliders.
they are only there to keep rocks from hitting the fenders when off roading at high speeds. Since most Raptor owners prefer high speed trails over rock crawling ford decided to add it for that reason.
@@rowdyjoshy1798 I understand, but those sidesteps should have been removed for the test-no one would seriously consider wheeling with them still attached.
@@chiemekaa why would you drive one vehicle to go offroading? Need at least two trucks to pull the other one out 🤣. Just how many non drivers are you taking?
Love the Ranger Raptor. Packaging, power, suspension…just a great all around product from Ford. As a F150 Raptor owner, maybe I should get a baby Raptor too.. 🤔
Great Video drove all 3 and I too like the Ranger Raptor the other too just gutless 4's. Loved the Raptor so much just bought one and agree the A/C in the Ford is the best. We get 110+ heat in the summer here and the A/C needs to be great. Love my Raptor Ford did great on this truck and I even got mine at MSRP just have to look around.
You are incorrect on a couple of things with the Raptor… it’s not a 3.0 L V6… it’s a 405 hp twin turbo 3.0 L V6 and that makes a big difference. Also the side steps are also built in rock sliders.
Very fun video. I like the side by side comparison. From day one I been saying that the Bison needed different gear ratio for the oversize tires. They are also heavy. We can see how slow like a slug it is.
It would be fun to see a "budget option" compete. The Frontier Pro-4X can be had for $36-$37k. You could buy a RZR XP side by side as well and still have cash left over for gas.
And you would still have a worst truck compared to these actual off road trucks. You are missing the point that these are capable off road trucks and the Nissan isn't.
Sand mode was the mode for use in the tacoma for this. It changes the shift timing. The Q3 fox shocks in taco needed to be adjusted and the seats were probably not adjusted for your weight and maybe not set on in off road mode.
@@beexiong2995 Frontier hasn't been last at everything unless 0-60 times is that important to a buyer. The powertrain has been in production since 2021, and the chassis was never a problem. It's properly built as a mid-size work truck. Overall reliability has been second to none, and even more so, considering the new Tacoma isn't fairing too well from blown engines and parts snapping easily.
@@0HOON0 well yeah. It's the oldest truck on the market. Priced the same as the last gen tacoma which it benchmarked the old tacoma. Why would anybody pay more money for an old truck. Nissan knows this
The ZR2 also has a launch mode you can access when you go into the right mode and turn off all the things. I have yet to see anyone use it yet and have t tried it in m4 24 ZR2. Would like to see it in action
"Reliability" isnt a factor anymore considering Toyotas recent engine failures and axel snapping on their products. TFLs exact same spec of this Tacoma broke on an off-road trail.
@naveenthemachine let them come. Toyota has the most cancerous fanbase on the planet. They think their cars are God's gift to man. ANY video about a car, Toyota or not, will have them in the comments bragging about how superior they are. You could be comparing an 89 camry to a 25 audi and they'd still claim the Toyota is better because it's "more reliable".
I've been wanting a new Taco but now considering a new Colorado/Canyon because of the price differences. The only thing holding me back so far are the problems I'm seeing current owners having to deal with on the Colorado forums. I know it's the popular thing to hate on Toyota these days but if you spend 5 minutes on the Colo/Canyon forums you'll see GM's reliability is still nothing to write home about. Dented roofs, electrical issues, and yes engine and transmission problems too. But spotlight's on Toyota I guess. Also out of 80k+ new Tacos sold so far it's not unreasonable that you'll see a number of failures, especially with a new product launch.
The TFL failure has not occurred again to my knowledge. The new Taco's transmission is a bigger concern. It overheats easily and several complete failures have been reported.
I have the GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Bison and it's been flawless. It had to go back to the dealer for a TPMS issue but it was fixed. The engine is great. It's not a power house but it feels and acts like a diesel and has a forged steel rotating assembly and Billet Camshafts. Has a Borg Warner turbo that is super loud too. It's been great. @@tm68669
@@ytj22 They’ve been out for over a year in the Australian market mate. Haven’t heard any cries of reliability problems. Unlike Chevrolet. Or let’s talk about replacing 100,000 Tundra engines.
@@slingerriggin5226 I'm just saying what Ford is saying about their own products, that's all. I didn't see the Tundra in this video, but you raise a good point, it's pretty amazing that the company is replacing all engines, even though 99% of them haven't failed.
ZR2 Bison by a mile...not even close. The ZR2 should have been used in this comparison and that's even better! The only thing the Ranger Raptor is better is the powertrain that Ford went with. GM should have went with a V6 turbo but the 2.7 turbo they use is not bad.The ZR2 is the best value at around $52k loaded. The best all arounder as well. The ZR2 Bison should have been a small block V8 with a 10 speed automatic to keep it different than the ZR2 and justify it's $65k price tag.
Did she pay you to say that? I have always thought she was the most annoying automotive personality on RU-vid although I will admit this video was easier to watch than all the other videos I have seen her in.
Jack of all trades…. Taco ha yeah right! the bison is the jack of all trades. It was in the 17s with 35s in a drag race. Did better in whoops. Taco came in last place for me. Ultimately i would choose the RR.
Baja mode on Colorado doesn't put it in 4Wheel Drive. You must still select it. Also, it turns off/reduces traction control. In a drag race on lose dirt may not be good choice.
To be fair, the ZR2 Bison has 35" tires, I would assume that it would've beaten the TRD Pro (probably not by much, though) if it were the standard ZR2 with the 33" tires, like the ones on the TRD Pro and the Raptor (I believe).
Once again: in this class is Ranger Raptor and everyone else. If the Raptor proves to be really toughte, Ford has hit the ten! (And a retractable step in the facelift...)
The "aggressive" styling with the fake vents, sums up what Chevy and Toyota are trying and Failing to do. Good job Ford for being the real deal AND still the only performance pickup even in "the States"
wtf are you talking about ? These are off road trucks , what the hell do fake cents have anything to do with off-roading. It’s ok being a ford homer but come with something more serious
ZR2 and Raptor are 2 different vehicles made for 2 different functions. The Raptor isn’t really made for rock crawling and the ZR2 isn’t really made for Baja-ing
