This was a very comprehensive instructional video on tech stream and tpms sensors, thanks

Thanks for the video. It was very helpful. So many people on different forums were posting that you only needed to enter the new ID code in Techstream. Obviously...that info was NOT correct. After entering my three old and one new code for my single new sensor, everything worked perfectly. Thanks again!

@14:00 What is the purpose of that aluminum washer? Is it crush washer? When you install TPMS sensor w/rubber stem, I assume (I've never work w/tires w/TPMS sensors) you need to apply some mounting lubricant pasta (I used Bead Don on rubber stems), like for usual stems w/no TPMS. But do you need to apply a bit of that paste on metal stem, like you have? Or something else should be applied, or just nothing? In instructions for another similar metal stem they don't say anything about any lubricant on the sensor stem. But the metal stem also has on the bottom the Rubber gasket as well, so should be lubricated I think. Thank you for the informative film.
@paulkelley86
@paulkelley86 Год назад
The aluminum washer is just a washer, not a crush washer. It helps distribute the clamping force. You are correct about the rubber seals making the air tight seal. You can go with no lubricant, but I personally prefer a little tire paste. You are again correct, service information likely will not specify.

@@paulkelley86 Thank you. But is it better to put that washer, if the original nut didn't have it (but is longer and has something on its end, which I even don't know how to name. It is kind of tiny-slim washer (~1mm thick) from black metal, and it is attached to the nut w/4 tabs, bent inside of the nut. It rotates free on the bottom of the nut, being attached to the nut w/those tabs. many expensive sensors come w/that attachment on the bottom of the nut)?

How do you know which sensors need a tool/programmer to pull the ID from them? I have Techstream, want to install new sensors but keep reading that I need a tool to read the new sensor and wake it up before programming with Techstream. Is this true?

Some toyota/Lexus have a "set a" and "set b" button but not sure about that model specifically. Some don't have that. Look for the a button with the tpms symbol and a the word set on it. If you find it, press it and learn the 4 winter tires and those will become set be. Once they are all learned you don't have to relearn over and over, you just click the button when you switch wheels and the vehicle will look for the other set. If it doesn't have this button you have to learn them every time you switch so keep the tpms sensor ID written down to make it easier.

Thanks for the video! I have two sets of wheels for my GF's 2012 Prius-V (meh, but my Cummins Jeep negates it, lol). Yesterday I installed 4 Schrader 29079 valves in the winter wheels. I'm early in my searching, but it looks like that Techstream cable is only $25, but is the software costly, or a subscription? That VT56 is not cheap! Is there a more reasonable alternative? I have winter and summer wheels and don't want to pay a shop (for anything for that matter, lol).
@paulkelley86

There are aftermarket tools like the atech and similar that can do it directly, and much easier. Not sure those techstream lite imitations work. The legit one is $500

There are "cracked" versions of older Techstream software that can be used. Your car is old enough so if you find an old version the of software, you can use it.

if you actually buying that $25 MINI VCI cable, it comes with "old" techstream for you to use. It works in my old WinXP 32b straight after installation. You can also buy PMV-107J for $10 a piece. The price is very reasonable!

I have a 2021 4Runner. The dealership already handled the issue 2x but TPMS light keeps coming back after a day or two later. Yes they’re OEM SENSORS. I know for sure that they’re not damaged because the dealership won’t be able to re- initiate the sensor. Although on my last visit they said that ID#2 not responding, they were able to reinitialized the sensor. The tpms light went away and all four tire pressures showed. After a day later same problem came back. All four tire pressures are blank with the TPMS light on... I’m so frustrated!!!
@paulkelley86
@paulkelley86 3 года назад
Sometimes there are factors that are being overlooked. I once had a Kia Sorento with an intermittent TPMS light, it ended up being interference caused by the customer working at the airport. You will have to keep giving them the chance to find the root cause, if it continues to be an issue with sensor 2, they will likely replace it, but if the lost communication ends up being with different sensors, maybe there is an issue with the module, or if all 4 sensors, maybe even an intermittent voltage or ground loss type of issue. Don't underestimate the complexity, and the fact that it took a day to happen again makes it difficult since when they reprogram it, it appears to be fixed, at least for a time.

Great video but I still have a Simple Question that I cannot find the answer: do the Denso/Pacific “First Time Fit” sensors (exact replacements for OEM ‘09 Highlander) need some sort of process to “wake” them from “hibernation”? I’m assuming they ship in hibernation to prolong battery life. If they do need to be “woken up” - how to do that? You do not show or comment on this step. The reason I ask is that I do not want to mount new sensors only to be told “they’re bad”, particularly if I end up being told “ they’re bad” only bc the shop doesn’t know how to wake them up. I’m trying to avoid the Dealer service dept for obvious cost reasons. I do understand that Techstream has to be used to input new sensor IDs into the ECU, but I just need to figure out how to prove I have good replacement sensors to start with, before mounting them. Any guidance much appreciated.
@paulkelley86
@paulkelley86 3 года назад
Assuming they are the same as OEM, they should be good to go if programming the numbers like I did. If you are using an aftermarket tool to communicate directly, you may need to drive it a bit to get the inertia switches inside to wake them up. As far as I know, all tpms sensors go to sleep when stopped for a long period, and many come asleep from the factory.

I have a Prius V and 2 sets of tires and have been using them for 8 years. Recently I switched to the summer wheels and the TPMS light went on. I reset with the button under the steering wheels but after a day is on again. I have Techstream and went into the system and all 4 sensors are working reading temp, pressure, and voltage. I am not sure what else I can do to diagnose or reset the TPMS light. Any suggestions will be apperciated.

Is the light on solid or flashing? Solid typically just means low-pressure. Be sure it is set to the tire placard spec in the door jamb. If flashing, using techstream perform health check. Report back with the dtc's/codes. I'll help you. So far what you did sounds good.

@@michaellau371 it sounds like the sensors have not been programmed to the car. Maybe the first set of 4 have, but at least some of the sensors in the second set have not. That's why some of those codes mention "sensor not initialized". You should be able to program them through the techstream utility but you will need the numerical codes from the sensors. Either by breaking the tire down and physically reading the numbers from the sensor, or using a different tool that can communicate with the sensor and retrieve the sensor ID numbers. Then write them in the techstream utility. But I do understand you have been using them 8 years. Have they always been problem free? All 8 wheels? Never had the sensors replaced? Because that is typically the length of time before the batteries fail and they require sensor replacement. I don't have a great explanation for why after 8 years the module "unlearned" the sensor(s). Maybe it was accidently done when trying to troubleshoot. Try a tool like the atech. It can wireless communicate with sensors to be 100% sure they are good and also indicate battery life.

If an ecu won't communicate, next steps are to verify it is getting correct voltage, good ground, and connection to communication/ can network. If all OK, replace module. Those steps are a little more in depth and require knowing terminals and having dmm and ideally oscilloscope.
