This video helped me tremendously. I unhooked the negative battery terminal. Loosened belt tensioner. Put in 4mm Allen wrench for pin. Removed belt from alternator. Removed lower radiator hose after draining radiator. This gave me lots more room. Removed clips and brackets on wires and lines in the way. Two bolts out of pwr steering pump and bungied it up out of the way. Three bolts and a nut removed from alternator. Removed wires from alternator. The alternator then came out the side wheel well easily. I was surprised because it didn’t look like it would fit. Reverse steps to replace. The bolts were tight and most difficult to remove with so little clearance. I used multiple sockets and wrenches. 10, 12 and 14 mm. Thanks for the video! 5.7 2wd with tow package. 150 A

You just saved me $1,600. That's what the dealership here in DC wanted for a replacement alternator and install. Your video helped me do it myself. One suggestions, the two bolts for the power steering pump are at the 12 and 3 o'clock positions looking towards the truck from the front. I was trying to get the same bracket bolt out you did because I thought you meant the small bracket closer to the wheel well.... Once I figured that out after watching your video for the 20th time...it was pretty easy. Thanks again.

This is pretty helpful, but I found it easier to drop the sway bar, that allowed me to use my hand (not fingers) on the breaker bar and ratchet. Also he forgot to mention that there is another bolt (10mm) on the bracket that holds the power cable to the alternator. I also found very easy to drop it down thru the bottom. Since I'm an older guy, I took the easier way.

Man ooooo man I almost made that mistake of getting the 100amp alternator but instead I got the 150 and thank god I did. I’m about to install it on my 2012 Toyota Tundra limited edition. I would of had to do all that extra work you both did. I called Toyota and asked which alternator it was and they said in their computer that it was the 150 so that’s the one that I ended up buying from O’Reilly auto parts. For all you that are not sure just call Toyota and ask them what’s the one it comes with stock and go from there that way you guys get the correct one and avoid all that extra work from the beginning 👍🏽👍🏽... thank you for posting the video on here and those two cars look cool as heel specially the racing one..

The alternator did wiggle out from the side after removing the power steering pump. My 2008 Sequoia PCM had to relearn. I changed the alternator in cold weather and it did not work correctly until the engine warmed up and I let the car run for about 30 minutes. Finally the new alternator started to work properly. Before that the care kept idling at about 200 rpm and would turn off.

I used to think working on engines in full-size cargo vans was a bit tight when compared to the pickups that I owned in the past. But now I think newer pickups are even worse than the vans. I am currently building a toy hauler out of a Ford E450. Even with the 6.8L V10 crammed in the engine compartment, the E-Series seems to have more room to work on than your Toyota Tundra...

When you disconnect the battery in your Tundra your computer will lose your fuel mixture settings. It needs to drive about 20 miles to relearn them. Idle will be 250 to 350 may even stall a couple times. But then it relearns and will run like normal. Learned this the hard way when I replaced my battery. My truck ran like garbage so I took it back to the part store to have the system tested but it cleaned up and ran great while I was on the way there. Everything tested great but I wonder how it would have tested with the idle so low?

I live in rusty ass NY where RU-vid videos are only fantasy. Anyways, top power steering bolt broke even after soaking in liquid wrench for a day. What a shitshow.. I fought that fkr for 10 hours trying to get that pump out. Finally leveled up though and final boss is tomorrow. 🦾 word of advice - take out the fan and shroud, remove upper and lower radiator hoses (after draining radiator). I know it seems like more work but there is much more room to access the power steering pump bolts, and soak the shit out of every nut and bolt with a good penetrating oil for at least 24 hours if you live in the rust belt. I'm replacing everything but the water pump and ac compressor while I have this apart (alternator, steering pump, belt tensioner, idler pulley, belt, steering lines/hoses, reservoir). I hopefully never have to go through this shit again. I hope the engineer that designed this layout burns in Hell. 💀
@SD-unlimited
@SD-unlimited 2 года назад
I'm in New England attempting this now on a 2011 5.7. I'm at the "soak the shit out of every nut and bolt" phase and will take your advice of draining the radiator and removing the shroud and hoses. There's just no room in there. I just barely started rounding off the 12 o'clock position power steering pump bolt. That's when I called it, soaked everything and began re-evaluating. Really hoping I can get that top power steering bolt out without breaking it or rounding it completely. Everybody working on their vehicles in those dry, arid states don't know our pain!
@paxster76
@paxster76 2 года назад
@@SD-unlimited Jesus, don't round it off lol. Just be patient and let the penetrating oil do it's thing, and if it feels like it's gonna break it probably is so back off a bit. Just apply steady pressure. It might creak and pop but it will eventually come out. I was rushing and paid the consequences (broke the bolt). Removing everything is the hardest part of it. Like I said - if you can afford it, replace any components you can while you have it apart or you might be reliving this one day. Good luck!
@SD-unlimited
@SD-unlimited 2 года назад
@@paxster76 It's done. Had about 6 hours into it but it was stupid stuff affecting me like one of the bushings was rust-fused to the old alternator. Took heat, PB Blaster, drifts, a hammer, more heat, etc to get that out. I also did my tensioner, idler and belt while in there. With the fan, shroud and lower radiator hose removed, there's plenty of room to work. Anyone who's not in a dry, arid state shouldn't even bother trying to take it out the side. Not going to happen with any amount of rust present. If I had to do it again it should easily be half the amount of time or less. Draining the radiator took about 20 minutes by itself. Now knowing where, what and how to take everything off, it wouldn't be as horrible a job. As you mentioned, ANYONE in a rust belt state, don't even bother trying to only go through the wheel well. You need access from the wheel well but opening up the front helps so much. Drain the radiator, take the fan and shroud off and give yourself as much room as possible. The hard lines are still a pain to work around but it can be done. There are two bolts/brackets holding them in place - one on the alternator, one back further on the transmission pan. Use 6 point sockets/wrenches when you can. Use lots of penetrating oil. Wire wheel all the hardware and use grease or anti-seize when reinstalling to make your life, or the next guys life easier when it needs to be done again. Thanks @paxster76 for the advice on this. I don't think I would've been able to do it without reading your comment here. Much appreciated!
@paxster76
@paxster76 2 года назад
@@SD-unlimited Really glad I could help out! Yes the bushing didn't come with my new alternator so I had to lube, soak and carefully tap the old one out to reuse. They're impossible to find. And just so everyone knows, the power steering bolt I broke cost me $18 at the dealer (wtf). Of course it's an odd ball size so you can't just go to the hardware store to replace it. This is definitely one of those jobs where you feel like your truck is fighting you every step!

You would need a larger alternator because the additional electronics require more voltage, the autozone guy wasn't electronic system savvy

Pulled mine out from the bottom. Jacked up the truck, let the tires hang. Removed shield. Rubber mat by wheel Left wheel on Serpentine Belt removal 3 alternator bolts. 130 A have towing package Did not need to remove hoses or power steering pump. Power steering pump had 2 bolts and 1 nut on the front by the pully. Wasn’t necessary to remove. Pulled out from the bottom from where I removed the rubber mat.

Do you have 4x4 and a 5.7L v8? Just bought a 320 amp high output alternator for an audio system and I have to swap them out.

Yeah bud this is the 4x4 5.7L you cant just pull it out from the bottom on this 5.7 L. I have been fighting this pos for about 5 hours so i decided to watch a video to see if there is an easier way and this video is by far the most efficient way ive seen

Stay away from AutoZone. They have the worst parts available. Their product brand is called Duralast. They need to change that to Hope it last. They give you a lifetime warranty but, who wants to change an alternator or starter every six months? Especially on at 5.7 Tundra. Go somewhere else and buy a Denso alternator. If you want quality, buy Denso parts for your vehicle.

Another reason the previous gen tundra is better. Litterally an hour job and that includes dropping the skid plate.

Owners of some FWD Tundra's may have a huge undercarriage skid plate like on mine... to deal with also! 🧐

The mounting dowel pins that go behind the unit are rusted into the alternator. I went to the dealership and they said that they don't exist...??? I need to replace them on my new alternator. Anyone have a part number? 2007 5.7 Tundra. Thanks!!!

Pep Boys told me, $500, several small shops told me $600 - $800. Cost me elbow grease, tired fingers, neck cramps, but used the money I saved for a shrimp dinner. Good luck.

Call your dealership and give them the last 8 digits of your cereal number. They can tell you which alternator you need.
