As the entry to the Toyota SUV family, the Urban Cruiser launched 2 years ago has been a great sales success. Recently a new generation model was unveiled and it looks certain to continue on the path of the predecessor.
The new model has grown substantially with an extra 370mm in length and an additional 25L of boot space ensuring improved passenger space and comfort.
The range has been simplified to now have 2 specification levels, Xs and Xr. A 5 speed manual transmission or 4 speed automatic in Xr spec make up the range.
All models are powered by the same 1.5l 4 cylinder petrol engine as used in the previous model. 77kW and 138Nm are slightly underwhelming on paper but translate to adequate power for most urban uses. Freeway and open-road cruising can require higher revs and frequent downshifts to keep the engine in the ideal power band. A number of us on the launch drive felt that a 6th gear would be a boon for cruising but would obviously add when it comes to the very keen pricing.
Xr spec does give you items like a 7” infotainment screen with reverse camera, wired Apple Carplay/ Android Auto, 17” black alloy wheels, keyless entry and start and 6 airbags.
Around town the car is light and easy to drive in all conditions. When cruising, it feels solid and stable with engine noise due to the higher revs needed being my only complaint. This applies to both manual and automatic transmissions.
As before, the Urban Cruiser is twinned with the Suzuki Grand Vitara. Whereas the previous generation had the 2 versions fighting head to head in the market place, this time they have taken very different paths.
The rationale for this is very simple. Toyota have the Corolla Cross in their stable and want to ensure that the Urban Cruiser remains as an entry SUV placed below the Cross. In this regard, both the spec levels and pricing of the Urban Cruiser are spot-on and although some felt that they baby sibling could have had more spec, this would move the pricing up further than Toyota SA wanted.
Pricing: including 3 year/ 100 000km warranty and 4 year/ 60 000km service plan
Xs manual R329 400
Xr manual R347 000
Xr auto R369 900

Hi Allan! How would you compare the drive with Tiggo 4 Pro?

Same engine bigger body. Won't it be slower on the road.

I don't have the exact technical figures, but they have definitely changed the gearing and gear ratios so that should compensate. It certainly felt more responsive on the road than the previous model

Is this the same as driving a starlet on heels?

I would rather spend the R23 000 extra from the XR A/T and go for a Corolla Cross Xi model.

It's always a matter of choice. A fairer comparison would be with the XR manual, then the difference is around R43 000 and you are getting a much lower spec level. From Toyota's perspective, they are giving you lots of choice

Which is a better buy between this car and a starlet?

It really is a decision of which style of car suits you. They use the same engine and drivetrain but obviously the Urban Cruiser offers a bit more space and ground clearance if you travel on dirt roads.

If you are in South Africa, I suggest you approach the dealer you bought from. Most cars sold in SA have rust warranties

Most cars made in India rust quickly. Look at the first dusters . Poor quality steel
