Leon Panetta as Defense Secretary had arrogantly boasted that the Taliban were finished after a large string of their Leaders & Commanders had been killed in drone strikes. It is policy and its effective implementation that is the key to success and not Body Counts. Unfortunately the same sort of stupid policy has been followed since Vietnam. The 1992 Gulf War was a relative success because it had realistic targets and a good plan when to end the war.

My absolute favorite recent TV history was a face to face interview between President Biden and President Vladimir Putin. President Putin asks President Biden, "So you think I'm a killer?" President Biden nods. The RF President smiles and says, "I know I am but what are you?" The look on Biden's face after he got the translation was priceless!! He was dumbfounded and sperchless!! 🤍💙❤️

Are there not at least three reasons for Ukraine's raid into Kursk? One is psychological: to embarrass Putin and strike fear into the populace. Another is practical/tactical: home defense has not proved effective due to superior Russian tactics and equipment, therefore take the fight to Russia which is unexpected and less fortified. The third is strategic: an attack on the Russian home front will necessarily divert attention and men/material from the Ukrainian front lines. Regardless, the maneuver has failed and was conceived out of desperation. Just an amateur's simple analysis...

@ganthrithor
@ganthrithor Месяц назад
I agree with you: Mearsheimer's assessment that, "elite units would be better employed on the front lines," is spoken like someone who's never had to actually run a campaign. I don't disagree with his other points about "Will this deliver any actual value?" and the situation reminds me fundamentally of starting a base-race in a Starcraft match, but arguing that sending these high-mobility units to the front lines of a trench & artillery war is a productive use of the resources at your disposal seems silly. When the enemy is dug in and you don't have the men and artillery volume to contest positions in that manner, you'd best utilize the resources that you do have in the most efficient way possible (in this case, playing defense on the static front to conserve resources there while engaging the enemy where they are weak). This push definitely seems like it's been successsful in making Russia look stupid, possibly screwing up some of the Russians' supply lines, and just generally allows the Ukrainians to get some use out of their special operations units-- if you can't meet the enemy head-on, then catching them out of position and repeatedly smashing poorly-organized response convoys as they trickle into the AO piecemeal is a logical way to maximize the impact of relatively light units. I'm not sure it's the best idea in the long-term or strategically sound in any way, but tactically it seems like pretty good way for the Ukrainians to utilize the tools at their disposal.
@hq3473

I certainly think that Mearsheimer is no military expert, and he's entitled to his opinion, but it shouldn't be taken as gospel. However, I'd agree with him and the others who are saying that this operation is very unlikely to achieve anything strategic. There'll be a minor and temporary tactical victory, that the Ukraine and the West can cheer on, but ultimately almost certain to prove futile. I suspect quite a lot of British gung-ho militarism behind this plan, perhaps with the thought of capturing the Kursk nuclear facility as a bargaining chip? The Ukrainians will find their supply lines vulnerable and could well become encircled. The fact is that Russia has room to fall back and re-organise, it's a vast country, as Napoleon and Hitler found out, and it has a deeply patriotic population used to hardship.

There’s actually plenty of reason for Ukraine to invade Russia. Ukraine’s objectives are many but one of the big ones is to get their land back: Crimea, Donbas, and the rest. It would take a massive change in fortunes to win that land back violently, so another bargaining chip must be acquired and brought to the table. Because the Ukrainian land that Russia holds is probably the most heavily defended territory on Earth today, whereas the Russian border was barely defended due to Putin’s confidence that Zelensky could never be so bold, it makes more sense to take Russian land in order to trade it for Ukrainian land, than to fight for the Ukrainian land straight-up (again).

Was this not an American argument in WW2? Why, Europe, Japan had hit Perl Harbour, now Europe, why Africa, after Africa why Crete, after Crete, why Italy, as American Political and Military leaders wanted land in France in 1943. The argument given here is an academic intellectual view and not an emotional intelligence view. What is actually being stated here, is if America, should withdraw into itself as no longer a Superpower, or should it stay engaged in the world, upholding a basic democratic simplistic rule, that if another Country, invades another, regardless of provocation, has the moral legitimacy to defend itself and should be supported by democracy countries. I cannot remember any war since 1945 that has been condemned by Western published opinion so vehemently like the Russian attack on Ukraine. The first time Western states do not sit in the drivers seat to crush a second/third world power with their advanced military might is a shock for the denounced „rulers of the world“. The main difference is the opponent not bowing to them but rather overcoming their dominance. What a contradiction to support Israel bombarding defenseless civilians whilst condemning Russias slow and restrained advances on the front as the worst war crime ever. It has become obvious that published opinion does not hate war in general but wars that we do not win, although severe sanctions were supposed to underline the Western supremacy. For the first time since 1945 Western hegemony has found its limits. Putin is clever enough to bleed Ukraine military to death instead of destroying them in giant blowups. It is face saving for the Western alliance but in the long run efficient to keep Ukraine out of NATO, which was Russias goal from the beginning of their invasion. They seized those regions which are likely to support them since they were former victims of the proxy regime in Kiev since 2014. The West may finance the corrupt rump state left over now, a dysfunctional unit that serves for nothing anymore but a large scale agriculture. Mission accomplished

There are at least 3 reasons why Ukraine invaded Kursk. The first reason is to put pressure over all Russian borders. Now with this invasion, the Russian army will have to reinforce 100% of its border with Ukraine. Ukraine was doing it already but Russia was not. And there was some kind of assurance from the Russian side that the West would never allow such a special military operation from Ukraine towards Russia. By having the obligation to reinforce its whole border, Russia will lose resources on its other fronts. The second reason is to bring the war inside Russian territory and to sow chaos. Most of Russians are ok with the war IN Ukraine as long as it does not spill over the frontier. That is not the case anymore. And the third reason is it for tat. "I will free Kursk territories if you free ukrainian territories." Simple as that.

In my opinion, the most plausible version of why Ze’s gang went to Kursk is that this is the last realistic opportunity to use all the military potential that the West has provided before Trump comes to the White House, since after this deadline Ze already has such an opportunity simply there won't be up to a complete ban on the use of American military equipment at the front. It's like the dilemma that a drunkard faces - give his salary to his wife, or is it better to drink straight away. He chose to drink it right away. This may produce a media effect in the short term, but will end in complete disaster for the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the long term. since they are forced to transfer the most combat-ready units from the Donetsk direction and expose the front in several places, putting these areas at risk of a breakthrough, which is what is happening now.

I think we have to consider also how the russian glide bombs have altered how Ukrainians can fight and defend. This invasion of Russia is made up of smaller units basically terrorizing the countryside. It's not that they can hold territory, but they can force Russia to use lots of resources to clean up the mess, for a relatively small investment, which relieves pressure on the entire line for ukraine. The Russians are busy putting out fires, and taking loses. Just the threat of more raids like this could force Russia to divert resources north.

John misses the point. Russia has tens of thousands of troops manning an 800 km defended front line. They are dug in like in WW1. Its not moving further into Ukraine. For this reason a frontal assault from Ukraine will not work. What Ukraine has done is deliver a devastating propaganda blow to Russia. As of 11th August, Ukraines troops, and there are only 5000 of them are doing a blitzcrieg, are a third of the way to Moscow. The symbolism is powerful. They are encountering very little resistance. Putin will have to pull thousands of troops out of the occupied areas to the east to stop it. That then leaves an opening that Ukraine can exploit. Just doing that is a victory. Russia can't risk massive bombardments or nukes, because this is Russian territory with Russian people. Its an error of epic proportions.

Assigning who has "blood on their hands" is not particularly useful in a world where virtually every nation carries this burden.
