We also assess the on-road driving differences between the manual gearbox and automatic transmission, and climb into the back to see just how much space there is.
If you're wanting to buy a compact SUV that will be affordable to own and run, this is the video for you.

Suzuki is a better value proposition. Toyota version only make sense if you are nowhere near a Suzuki dealer. Suzuki is less of a theft/hijack risk and insurance is more than likely cheaper too.

All these countless Toyota rebadges prove that Toyota's success means nothing about how good their products actually are. It just means people buy something that says "Toyota" on it without even considering that the competition might be better.

In Europe Toyota defends itself on the market actually only because of the best hybrid powertrains. Except for that, these cars are horribly outdated inside, not-user-friendly, covered with cheap paint, with naked plastic in the boot, overpriced + aggresive marketing makes it even more disgusting. @@Geebvs I agree that in cases where there is rebadging it is generally better to get the Suzuki because it often offers more for a lower price and I also agree that Toyota is kind of overpriced, but they are good cars though. They're reliable and easier to fix than German cars and they are user-friendly I can't think of anything that is not user-friendly about Toyota and I've never known their paint to be bad we've had a Toyota Camry for almost 20 years now and the paint still looks good despite my dad neglecting that car quite badly over the years.

@Steve-go6oq Год назад
@@pieterrossouw8596 A few reasons because there is a premium to getting the Cross (the top end Grand Vitara has better specs in general and is similarly prices to the entry level Cross we got). It came down to the Cross feeling more solid, more planted and the engine having a bit more grunt (the CVT blunts that a bit though). We used to have a 2013 Qashqai 1.6 and that had more power than the Urban Cruiser/Grand Vitara. I think they are great options in town but for my while she commutes between Cape Town and Stellenbosch and the 1.5 is an OK engine but honestly not enough. Basically we dropped bells and whistles for better ride and what feels to be a more solid package. Funny enough I noticed the tyres, Cross comes with Bridgestones and the UC those Apollo ones.

I think you were being very kind regarding the performance from the 1,5 engine. The power output is abysmal, especially up here Joburg where you lose 18% of available power at the coast. This means you have to constantly be changing gears to keep up with traffic on the freeways as 137nm torque is simply puny. It's a great car (I tested the Suzuki) , well packaged and for me the best looking in its segment but it needs an engine that matches the rest of the car. Suzuki has a brilliant 1 l turbo....

A turbo would be nice but turbo engines are not reliable. This 1.5L engine uses lighter pistons , low tension rings and requires a very light oil specification which is 0w-16. Add a turbo to that and you'll end up with excessive oil consumption and a dead engine in no time. This is the plague of the decade. I am glad there are still naturally aspirated engines available out there and with a reliable manual transmission. I am definitely getting one of these before they are no more made. I love both these cars, but I feel its actually overpriced. Why would one go for these if you can get an automatic Toyota Cross Xi for R350k. The cross is a bigger car and more powerful. What am I missing?

Toyota disappoints on specs. That screen should not be in at that price point. At least start with a nice 8 inch screen. Would have to use the compare tool to get more fine details as to the differences and the prices. I'll take the Suzuki if it's more value for money (ie: more tech).

R50 000, is R50 000. Less Maintenance when you have the Auto-Box. Little Inch here and a Bootlight there.. Not sure if this Toyota/Suzuki Twins are Good for the Market. As Ash mentioned, Dealer Network with Toyota, Service Levels vs Suzuki, normally part of a Multi-Franchise Circus Setup. The Extra Warranty is not a Deal-Breaker, as these cars are not Problamatic ( if it was German, it would be another story ). a Extra Year or Two Extension on Service Plan for Toyota, will cost you less than R20/30 000.

Still no proper middle seat in the second row. Lack of back support and lack of foot space. Not many 5 seater cars caters for a family of 5. Annoying!!

In Europe, is the Gran Vitara called the S Cross? It's confusing 😮 because the 4th Gen Vitara last the Grand name and is now a watered down pathetic Crossover.

Terrible and outdated drivetrain. In 2023 these cars have 77kw/138Nm? What a joke. I drive the Vitara Turbo GLX with a 1.4T and a 6 speed gearbox. Excellent drive that 1.4T is and I easily average less than 5L/100km on short and long distance trips

Unpopular opinion: Toyota is the Nintendo od the car world. Heavily overpriced for what you get. We can all debate reliability etc but times have changed compared to the 90's and 2000's where Toyota reliability was king. There are plenty brands that have great reliability. So that really doesn't stand out for me anymore as a reason to buy a Toyota.

Coming from a Ford Ecosport titanium, I am disappointed. The ford has lots of nice frills compared to the GV. I miss the 1 litre 3 turbo boost and 6th dear and reverse, heated seats, automatic rain wipers, 2 usb plugs in the front, and most import in a country where car hijacking is high, I cannot understand why there is not auto locking of the doors after a few metres? What I like, the ground height clearance of 210, and the comfortable seats and most import the big boot space. The GV unfortunately needs to work on the finer details of future technology if it wants to have a bigger market advantage on new technolo 14:30 gy cars.

@lungelosikobi6980 when i look at a crossover I just want to sleep. I don't understand why people buy these. Get a proper SUV. Sedans at this price usually have more space and safety anyways

I prefer sedans, but now buy crossovers / suv's as this seems to be the trend of all vehicle brands. Sedans seem to be classed as old school and may have much lower trade in values compared to SUV's and Crossovers. 😮
