Toyota is urging owners of certain older vehicle models to stop driving and get immediate repairs because an airbag inflator could explode and potentially kill motorists. The 'Do not drive' advisory covers some 2003-04 model year Corollas, 2003-04 Corolla Matrixes and 2004-05 RAV4s with Takata airbag inflators.

Toyota supporting their customers with no-charge recall work for 20 year old cars.

Honda went as far as going to salvage yards to remove faulty Takata airbags to ensure that they were not re-used, and reportedly even went door to door hunting down cars with the falty air bags and replaced them on the spot (that was in the US).

Yes indeed, even offering no-charge tow of the vehicle (removing all the barriers for the reluctant service customers). Honda went as far as removing the faulty airbags from junked cars at salvage yards and going door-to-door offering to replace them on the sport.

That's because they want the financial liabilities off their books. The stragglers prevent them from saying the problem no longer exists and hence they have to keep reserving funds each year for the entire production count.

Takata no longer exists, but the problem persist and now the automakers that once bought that airbags are exchanging them for functional ones. July 11, 2023: Dodge issued a "Do Not Drive" warning for 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck, over 84,000 are unrepaired and still on the road. May 4, 2023: BMW issued a "Do Not Drive" warning for approximately 90,000 cars. February 3, 2023: Honda issues a “Do Not Drive” warning for certain 2001-2003 Honda Accord, Civic, CR-V, Odyssey, and Pilot models Acura TL and CL cars. December 30, 2022: Volkswagen is recalling an additional 37,558. December 19, 2022: FCA (aka Stellantis) announces that there has been a third fatality involving one of their recalled vehicles, among 274,000 included in a "don’t drive" population: Chrysler 300, Dodge Magnum, Challenger and Charger from model years 2005-2010. September 20, 2021: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration kicks off an engineering investigation into 30 million vehicles built by more than 20 car manufacturers between 2001 and 2019, among them Ford, General Motors, Honda, Stellantis (the parent company of Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, Ram, and others), and Toyota. The investigation covers vehicles outside the existing recall that already has affected 67 million vehicles.

I got a recall notice about 5 years ago for my 2008 Corolla and the Toyota dealership in Kitchener told me that parts were not available and to just keep driving the vehicle as it was. I would like to buy a new Corolla but I've been told that there is an 18 month waiting list and in a few months the new 2025 Corolla will be in production and that it only comes in hybrid format for the 2025 year and the price will jump up dramatically from the 2024 model year's price. I'm going to buy a gasoline-powered non-hybrid Mazda3 instead as there is no 18-month wait to get one of those cars.

@@jessecv car manufacturers and dealerships do not have access to the registration office data base, or any data base that is not there own. Especially in Canada. The people who get those letters, had gone to the manufacturers dealership for an oil change, repair, or parts. Otherwise they doe not get the information of who now owns the vehicle if it is sold. They cannot ask who you sold it to either. So as I said in my original comment. They should make recalls accessible for the owner on the website.

They'd have the VINs of the scraped cars. It's reported to the MoT in each province. I dug up 2005 sales and found that Toyota sold 46000 corollas in Canada. If it was about the same in 2004 then that's about 90k Corollas in round numbers affected by the recall. Include the Matrix and Rav4 sales and (guess) that's ballpart 200k vehicles in total. So 4% ish of the affected 2004 and 2005 vehicles are presumably still on the road without having had the recall service performed. I wonder how many still are the road and did have the service done? Purely out of curiosity about just how many of these 20+ year Toyotas are still on the road. We can safely say that it's more than 4% ish. Double? Triple?
