For urban + long distance driving in the U.S. and Canada, a PHEV makes more sense right now; it's the sweet spot. EV mode for day to day driving in the city/suburbs, and combined EV/ICE mode for highway. When BEV can go 500 miles on a charge, and recharge to 300 miles in ~10 minutes, it will be the winner, assuming pricing is comparable. But that's not for another 2-3 years.
@dougm659

So you can drive 500 miles without taking a piss? Impressive…. Recharging times are much faster than you think!

@@dougm659 It's not about my bladder. It's about not _having_ to recharge until I want to. I make 200-250 mile drives for business, thus 400-500 RT and would prefer not to have to find a charger. Just go, do my thing, come back the next day. My trusty 2012 minivan can go 560 miles on a tank on the highway.

It's been a few years since Toyota announced it'll build a massive $14bn battery factory in North Carolina to manufacture batteries for hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and BEV production in North America. Initial limited production is scheduled for 2025, and completion around 2030. Given that there is strong demand with Hybrids in North America, and that most Toyota models sold in Northern America will offer a Hybrid version in the near future, internal priorities are for increasing production and procurement of Hybrid batteries. Already 40-50% of new car sales in North America for Toyota (and Honda) are now Hybrids. Toyota also bought out one of the Joint-Ventures with Panasonic (PEVE) to strengthen hybrid battery production.

Maybe true at some Japanese companies (just like some U.S. and European companies) but Toyota did a teardown of a Model Y a year or two ago with one of their top automotive engineers (he called it a "work of art"). When the Cyber Truck came out, Toyota grabbed one right away. They are fascinated by Tesla and I suspect they are stealing whatever ideas they can right now. Some of this is due to national pride; they'd prefer to copy from a superior American technology, than admit that the Chinese have surpassed them.
@yo2trader539

Notice they said whether to stop making pure internal combustion which mean they want to have all their Vehicles Hybrids from here on out which means every Toyota model will no longer be offered with a pure gas engine. Props, dude. I looked in the comments first before posting this. The two trucks still have pure ICE powertrains, but have a hybrid option, too. I'll add that Toyota is a worldwide company and they are well aware some of their developing markets do not have the electric power infrastructure to support a 'critical mass' of EVs on their roads. ICE vehicles will still be around for many years and Toyota realizes that. They are well prepared with experience in a variety of powertain options to take advantage of whatever becomes a standard in any part of the world.
@lolcatjunior

Big thing you are missing is that soon US, EU and Japan won't be the biggest car markets and manufactures. Hundreds of countries spend hundreds of billions on importing oil and ice vehicles every year. As electrification spreads, these countries will have green energy alternatives and will no longer spend money on big fossil fuels. Ethiopia for example has ban the sale of ICE vechicles. Fossil fuel industry and western automakes will be cut off from these revenues unless they make changes.

Toyota ICE cars are very strong sellers in California. EVs have slowed badly , almost stopped
@crosslink1493
@crosslink1493 2 часа назад
Sam, I think you need to explain it more clearly that Toyota is not going to a purely EV line-up of vehicles for sale in the USA, but they still sell almost all their models in a hybrid ICE/EV form. Also with China rushing to EVs, they are an authoritarian country and EVs have been mandated by 2030 (or 2035?), so the public does not have a choice like here in the USA. Recently in Southern California there was an all-EV charging 'gas' station that opened up. It looks similar to a regular gasoline fueling station you find the USA but its only for EVs. Its got a large convenience store associated with it with a lounge area. I've got my doubts whether it will be successful. Its in Santa Ana, California, not far from Disneyland. Look it up on RU-vid under the television station KTLA 5 'EV Gas Station opens in SoCal' as they did a short segment on it last week.

In addition to the fact that Toyota isn't capable of designing an affordable and appealing EV that can be sold at a profit, a big reason Toyota is pushing hybrids is for their dealers. Now they get maintain their profits from maintaining gas vehicles plus the added profit for maintaining the hybrid components. Dealer networks will go broke if all they sell is EVs that require 1/20 the maintenance and can be updated over the air. But in the next 5-10 years EVs in t he $20k-$30k range will kill off the hybrids . . . and possibly most traditional auto manufacturers. $12,000 to $20,000 EVs are being built and sold in China today. The government may be able to prevent the import of a $20,000 Chinese car, but the knowledge of how to build those cars isn't subject to tariffs.

A lot legacy ICE car makers and western governments are in denial over Chinese EVs. CHinese EVs have become or very close to becoming better than ICE car based purely on their value proposition alone. The trigger for Chinese EVS rise is their government's investments in developing EVs and battery tech (and I say this aa a critic of the CCP for opposing democracy). For years rightwing political pundits have ridiculously claimed EVs and alternate energy like solar will never be economically viable and the importance of oil and coal to the future., Looking forward to the day when they all eat crow. A decade down the road ICE cars are going to be a niche legecy market, And global oil and coal demand will plummet due to cheaper more ecologically friendly tech and energy alternatives. This co2 issue is a prime example why the argument free markets always does things better is a bunch of Randroid bs. The private sector alone wouldn't solve the co2 problem without government intervention necessary to level the economic playing field between ICE and EV and other technologies long enough for them to compete. What works best is mixed economies. A mix of regulation, taxation, services AND private sector. Use the right tool, for the right job.

Chinese money spends just like any other. And they pay their lumpers well. Toyota is a business and will make decisions on that basis. As for Pratt, the irony of him calling someone a muppet is not lost in me. Most people don't want the current generation of EVs. That will change as they become practical. The EV muppets think usually have a less than noble reason for gaslighting about EV technology, namely they have money invested in EV companies and need the rest of us to keep that stock price up. So their motives are less save the world and more save my portfolio. This is especially true of Tesla fanbois who bought high and lost a ton of money since. Now will I buy an EV at some point? Probably yes. But only after they no longer require me to change my life to accommodate it's deficiencies.

So a Corolla sold in Japan is not the same size, engine spec, interior, or trim as Corolla sold in North America, China, Europe, or developing countries. Each market/region is uniquely different in its preference, which is why North American models are increasingly designed in North America. I breathlessly thought to myself.."gonna....get...me......One... of...Those. And I did. So 10 years at saving about £50 a week. No tax, Insurance, Traffic jams and if I want to ride like a plonker... No road rules ! You're correct in that whats holding back general adoption is the stupid prices wanted for EV's but totally wrong on the pollution EV's make whilst being created. Do you realise it takes the power (electricity) of a small city to run an oil refinery ? They don't run on pixie dust. Cobalt is also added to the refining process. Then there the exploration for the oil Extraction and the danger of oil slicks First stage transportation - Getting the crude from the well to the refineries. Second stage transportation - Getting the refined product (Petrol or diesel to the servo's) Then You going to the servos to refuel and then burning it all mostly in single occupant transit to work and back. NOTHING is 100% environmentally friendly. When EV's come down to a reasonable price I will be chopping in my trusty 2007 dirty diesel Civic for one. I can wind/solar generate my own Leccy so will beholden to no outside influences unlike the strife in the middle east that's about to send the price of a barrel skywards.

We in America do not have the grid capacity to power all the cars with electricity. Now, if we’d work out how to power cars with Solar, we could work it out. I’m very happy with my non-plug-in hybrid Kia Niro. I get 54 miles to the gallon, even better in the city than on the highway. The hills and curves are my friends.

EVs are not going to be a problem for the grid. Rather, they may be a solution to grid inadequacy since they can charge at home and even carry home loads . The weak link of solar power is lack of storage. A 100KWH car battery will level out a residential demand and still be available for short trips. Most households have at least two cars; the second and third can assure that you have enough energy stored that you don’t have to import much grid power.

Tired of this guy. Buy all the EVs you want. I’m not buying one. I think I’ve got some company.
