Yes sir!! Just ordered one my self! :D any chance you will have Ed o'brien on the show some time? :) also, maybe an ambient sound episode? :D Cheers guys, from Denmark
Micah Buzan Ed is the out and out guitar player. Thom plays piano, guitar, electronics and writes the songs - Ed’s own words. Jonny does the emphasis parts on guitar, plays keyboards, electrics and does the orchestration on the tracks. You need to hear Thom play Clocks solo to hear how good he is. - on stage he adds the acoustic elements. Ed is awesome. One key that gets missed about it being a Mexican body etc was because ED wanted it to be cheaper so it wasn’t as restrictive a price range for younger, less well of players. He basically told Fender I want it affordable, so he pegged it personally to the £1000 mark. Signature models for all others add about £1000 just because of the name
You nailed Radiohead’s influence in what you said . Us 40ish types that were molded by alt music in the 90s had a bond with ok computer it was more than music .still is actually it’s just more. Great video .thanks for long form content that’s enjoyable.
That episode on strings made me experiment with different strings on different guitars. Changed quite a lot of things about the way I sound and play etc.. I am indebted.
With out a doubt my favorite Fender Strat of all time. I recommend watching the video with Jonny Kinkead on the setup with this guitar. Extremely knowledgeable about guitar setups.
You guys have a really special narrative that reaches way beyond the gear - although you dive deep enough into that stuff too. Very special. All the best, cheers! P.S. A strat from Ed O'Brian - where can you go from there!
totally feel free to make ed's episode 2-3 hours long nooo worries there ;) seriously though would love to see him go through some of the uses/applications of different delays he's used over the years (dd5, dmm, etc) and cannot wait for that episode!
Ed mentioned that single coild bridge pickups tend to squeal horribly when the sustainer is on. That's probably the reason why there's no coil splitting function as it would confuse some people.
Hey Dan, I recently bought a EOB Strat. Loving it! My quetion is about batteries. Mine drain quite quickly. I was wondering if you have played with the strength of the sustainer pickup for better battery life? Currently I do use rechargeable 9v batteries, but they still go quickly.....Any suggestions?? Or does all that tone simply come at a price?
Hope you figured it out, but you likely need to unplug the guitar, at least that's the case with active pickups. If not, may just need to remove the battery after sessions
How does the sound of the front pickup (when the sustaining feature is disabled) compared to the average normal strat neck pickup? Also how are you digging the JB in the bridge vs either a single coil strat pickup (or tele) or a normal full sized humbucker? keep up the great work!
I just tried one and I loved it! Extra amazing that yours was a gift from Ed himself! You mentioned that it ships with 9 gauge strings- and that you swapped them for 11's- what (apart from the normal set-up- intonation, etc.) needs to be changed to properly accommodate 11's (which is what I also play). Does the nut need to be changed?
Omg Dan, your tone truly is something to behold! And boy do you make it sing! Please do update with the vear you used; that was killer! Especially at 5:15 and onwards
Very interesting strat!!!!!!!!!! Daniel Lanois talked about the invention of the sustainer many years ago. He had the two prototypes and gave one of them to the edge. They called it the "inifinate guitar". The result was the song "with or without you". In the song there is a nice combination of sustainer and shimmer. The Edge now uses the Ed O'Brian strat, too.
Way to go Daniel - did you at least have Ed sign it "for real" on the headstock? I agree about strings, after your program about strings I decided to go to 9's on my 25.5" scale guitars and should have done 10 years ago. I have arthritis as I get older and now my hands don't ache all night after playing, and they are way twangy too - LOVE IT!
Is it weird that my immediate reaction is "where can I get that sustainer pickup on its own, to put into several other guitars"? Do they sell the pickup by itself, or only in the signature strat?
Rob Flax Pretty sure Fernandes hold the patent for the sustainer. So I believe they're the only ones who make them, meaning you should be able to get that exact one. I think, not sure though.
+ Rob Flax - Like Sam Anderson said, they're available through Reverb and eBay, and you can get a humbucker style too. However, they require a 9 volt battery, so installation is not so straightforward as simply replacing your existing pup.
Dan points out that the sustainer still functions when not plugged into an amp (yet the strat remains plugged in). Please clarify, if this strat is not plugged in to an amp and the sustainer is on, will you hear the sustainer functioning anyway “acoustically”?
HEY DAN! i know this is your video and i think you will like this too but this is for mick i have found THE BEST TS STYLE PEDAL EVER MADE!!! i know you have heard of hudson electronics you have played and loved the broadcast overdrive well i give you the......................HUDSON SIDECAR! it has a TS style front end with germanium clipping with active bass and treble controls so you can boost or cut both and it has a lot more gain to it will go into fuzz like sounds at full gain.BUT the best thing for me was it gave me the best p. sayce like sounds i have ever got.i was so pumped after playing it i called my mum! she didn't know what i was on about but i just had to tell everybody i know.KILLER PEDAL!!!
I actually am the Nigel Tufnel, sum Fripp/Belew using an ebow for 25, and now with a Fernades Guitar. I can actually metal with this, but I more of an ambient guy.
This looks to be a very versatile guitar. I’m a church musician and today we are basically cover bands; we might do a hymn and I️ pick up my classical, then strum on an acoustic if there are parts, and recently many uses for ambient electric sounds, I️ think inspired by Radiohead, are popping up - and yes that Guitar might be my next. But taking versatility in another direction, you might guess I️ really would jump at an excellent acoustic simulation and the question of 12 string electric, piezo, or pedals to get me there. I’m not all that good so the pretension of getting 3 guitars on stands seems out of place. Of course I️ went down the dark road of digital but learned I️ seek a more dynamic sound. This program has been huge for me, so thanks. But maybe you can think to deal with the acoustic electric switcheroo I️ do every Sunday.
Absolutely awesome...Aw man sorry about the old Strat that got stolen I can relate I had an original red FF that got stolen and haven't liked a single fuzz pedal I've tried since then Hopefully one of these days soon OR pluck out close to 2K for an original before their all gone Cheers Dan
I love Sustainer technology! It can be used in so many different ways - but my favorite is with high gain to enable an extended note paint brush to melodic metal that doesn't compromise staccato notes.
I'm sorry to hear that you were a victim of theft, Dan, especially of a dearly beloved instrument. I've been the victim of theft, too. It really stings. But, to quote Tennyson, "'Tis better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all."
"It's not an expensive guitar" "It retails for about a thousand pounds" Woah, we seem to have some differing definitions there :D Killer guitar though, definitely worth the money.
+Zaronion Ahem. Context I guess (Mick here). Custom Shop Fenders and Gibsons are now 3-5k+, and we tend to be around those guitars a lot - vintage guitars too - through our own instruments and dealing with artists. Apologies if the comment caused offence!
Any chance of an episode where you compare different speakers, alnico, ceramic, vintage vs newer reissues and how this impacts on pedal, amp and cabinet decisions? Enjoy the shows a lot, thanks.
+Colm Rogan Lots of people asking for this. There are soooooo many variables it’s really hard to know where to begin. It needs a series really. Hmmmmmm
Wow- you guys are on this new axe fast. Love to see you guys test out the new electro harmonix mig50 - esp. if you could get your hands on an older sovtek for comparison.
Any word if they will release new colors ? And say a builder goes and paints one, could the electronics be a tricky problem to put back in place (considering the sustainer) ?
I'm sure you have a tons of comments, but I have this guitar and was hoping maybe you could tell me how you balanced the pickups. Would greatly appreciate some specs. I'm just having trouble with the bridge pickup, SD JR, being way too bright and shrill. Thank you
Can you please tell me the individual saddle sizes? I need to replace one of them but can't find the info on the spec sheet (I only see the fret size listed).
It would have been nice for some explanation on how the sustainer works, it settings and what the switches do. A video just on the sustainer would be great. Love the guitar though, I already want one!
Arthur & Pippa's Vlogs the sustainer uses the bridge and neck pickups to create a magnetic field that keeps whatever notes you’re playing ringing out. The switches are on/off, and fundamental/harmonic/blend. The rear tone knob on the strat is replaced by a sustainer intensity knob.
Thanks. I knew the bit about the magnetic resonance but I am interested in what the knobs & switches do sound wise. Let's hope for a more detailed look at it from the Pedal Show.
Daniel, my man, that is an excellent guitar. Did you guys get a hold of the new Tumnus Deluxe? It looks absolutely fantastic and barely more expensive than the original. It'd be great to see in a Pick'N'Mix!
am looking to see if you guys did a show on the Danelectro Billionaire series, or featured any of them; I am very interested - I saw Pete Thorn ( horn parp) use them on his channel then realized there were more than the two he used, any thoughts?
Haven’t tried em yet. We’ve noticed that people have sort of stopped sending us new stuff... I think in case we’re not glowing about it! So we’ll get them in time. :0)
that says a lot about those who do so, if i go and buy something and don't like it i may go immediately to social media and pan them, they can't stop that. This the death of the writer birth of the reader thing isn't it, once out you can't hold control what people think. that's sad. They may just get a lot of people buy things just off the good word of TPS and other shows or monthly mags like Total Guitar etc. thanks for what you do guys.
I would love to see a show on in guitar effects like the black ice ovedrive mod or other effects and maybe the use of piezo bridges in electric guitars.
Love my EOB but Im finding that the bottom E resonants a lot more than the rest of the strings on my setup. Can anyone offer any advice on how a can set up my EOB properly to stop this uneven resonance on the lower string? I havent really changed the out of the box setup. Please help.
Sounds like you need to change the pickup height it may just be too high but if its just the low strings strats traditionally have the bass side on the pickup lower than the treble
If someone can vouch if this is a full on strat I am gonna buy it this Easter. Does it have a the usual strat neck pickup jangle, 4th position chime, 2nd position quack (like Sultans of Swing) and bridge pickup bite/twang for country? I am looking to buy this strictly for clean stuff and to play just one song using the sustainer (U2 WOWY) as I already have a Les Paul for more heavy work. Please don't recommend an Ebow as it's clumsy and I dont like Fernandes guitars. What I need is a full on Fender Strat that sounds like a usual strat with the sustainer system already installed.
I think this is the only guitar that will tick all your boxes without any modding. If you only need the sustainer for one song, and don't plan to use it much otherwise, you might be better off getting a pedal for sustain and harmonic shifting (since you're opposed to the e-bow) and using another guitar that can you you the single coil chime you're looking for, this is humbucker single humbucker, so you get a little quack and chime but its still pretty thick sounding overall because of the two humbuckers.
I'm so sorry your strat was stolen Dan, must have hit you hard to make you stay off them for so long. Its great that this beauty found its way to you and hopefully put things right. Its sounds brilliant! Looks like you were going through the vox?
Hi Dan - just got an EOB strat myself. Indeed awesome! My one concern is that if the battery dies, then all of the pickups become inactive. Are there any mods that can be done to fix this? I would love to have access to at least one pickup if the battery dies. Cheers!
That drive tone from 05:30 is sick! Love it, how did you dial it in? Was it an amp distortion, pedals, combination of both? Please share as I am really digging it. Keep on rocking!
Hasn't Dan previously said that he owned a strat which unfortunately was stolen, and as a result he could never bring himself to having another? Well in case Two Rock should read this and are feeling magnanimous, I unfortunately lost a studio 20, and have never properly gotten over it
