President Donald Trump’s decision to put tariffs on billions of dollars in Chinese imports last year shocked the world -- but he's taken a similarly aggressive stance on trade for decades.

In fact, Trump has been talking about a tariff strategy since the late 1980s, when he first tested the presidential waters - and his message back then bore notable similarities to the one that helped propel his winning 2016 campaign.

His rhetoric is the same, and it doesn’t update to include new information. Binary view. Roy Cohn set his beliefs of deny, deflect, attack anyone asking questions or accusing, never admit fault, never apologize, win at any costs. He did switch political parties Republican, the reform party, democrat, then back to republican. Consistent on cheating on wives. Consistent on saying the media is “fake news”...mostly when it doesn’t fit his narrative. Consistent on chumming with complicit pandering cronies. Consistent with an aversion to the truth. Tariffs and sanctions the last vestiges of a dying American empire.
@alxarmedliberationxecutive8363
@pathwayto enlightenment I think you've missed the larger picture. The United States is threatening sanctions on the rest of all the Nations on the planet. For instance on anyone buying Iranian oil. Tariffs are common among a lot of Nations. The citizens of those Nations pay the tariffs. But attempting to sanction countries is an entirely different operation. It's not an attempt to balance trade ( not that tariffs always accomplished this) it's an attempt to impose ones geopolitical geostrategic will on the rest of the world. And I believe that Uncle Sam's going to find that's easier said than done.
@milkshakeplease4696
@milkshakeplease4696 5 лет назад
Nope, not at all. See, the problem with Chinese is they are copy cats, lack critical thinking, and have difficulty thinking outside the box. Essentially, the US is walking away from the global order it created because it is not in its strategic interest to maintain it. The global order was put in place to contain the Soviets. The Soviet Union fell almost 3 decades ago, and many countries have prospered at the expense of the US in this global order, including China. It is unlikely that China can survive without this global order. The US holds all the cards.
@alxarmedliberationxecutive8363
@@milkshakeplease4696 The ONLY reason there's a middle class in America is from cheap Chinese goods (and other low wage Nations). Look at Walmart Target etc. If Americans had to purchase products only from Europe and domestic sources there would be no middle class, only poor and rich. And the idea that the Chinese steal ideas is a red herring. You Merely have to follow the patent infringement suits between American corporations to understand how everyone tries to steal from everyone else. America is a technology backwater now. And a dying empire lashing out at the rest of the world.
@milkshakeplease4696
@milkshakeplease4696 5 лет назад
@@alxarmedliberationxecutive8363 Actually, the cheap Chinese goods have suppressed wages here in the US. The cheap chinese goods have stifled the middle class. And there was a transfer of wealth from our working class to China's. Trump has begun the process of reversing that. The idea that the US is a dying empire is a total joke. Anyone who thinks that doesn't understand geography and demographics. Just wait and see. The Chinese are really overconfident. Yes, Shanghai might be developed, but you know there are plenty of places in China that are from being developed. China has poor demographics, they're surrounded by powerful countries like Russia, India, and Japan, heavily reliant on trade for food & energy, and the only reason the CCP has been able to maintain power is because they've been able to bribe all the different factions thanks to the global trade order the US created. The US on the other hand is in great shape. We have the world's strongest currency. We have the world's most creative population. We have good future demographics. We have the best University systems. We are protected by two huge oceans. We are surrounded by friendly, weak countries. We are extremely food rich and energy rich thanks to the shale revolution. The US is still by far the most powerful country on Earth and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future.
@alxarmedliberationxecutive8363
@@milkshakeplease4696 You're so far from reality it's as though you're from another planet. American companies continue to take advantage of cheaper labor in dozens of countries.. That's what suppressed wages in the US There's a 22 trillion dollar domestic deficit and the market is unstable and over capitalized. China isn't surrounded by enemies it's surrounded by economic partners. It's the American empire with only 5% of the worlds population but consuming 30% of the world energy production annually that's unsustainable That's why the US military and intelligence agencies have been co-opted by the Military Industrial Complex and transnational corporations ( who own the Congress and White House) to try to secure access to resources and markets. Transnational corporations aren't interested in America they're only interested in profits for stockholders.

So people just magically forget what he said about Japan? Or is Japan still an enemy today?
@chrisnapoli8386
@chrisnapoli8386 4 года назад
Japan wasn’t an enemy but they were aggressive trading partners and used back in the late 80’s & early 90’s they were buying up a substantial amount of prime real estate, especially in NY. That may be why he went after them since they may have been cutting into his real estate business in NY. Then Japan has some other recessions in their own country so I believe they quit investing in American real estate. Trump may not have liked that they were going after NY real estate aggressively. But once China got admitted into the world trade organization in the early 90’s that’s when the real trade deficit occurred between American & China which only grew larger throughout the decades.

Yet just wait and see probably coffee tax will be soon and just wait for to say the next president, to vote for I might say I vote for that a candidate and you’ll be happy seeing your mother arriving at New York City dead when a Boeing plane crashes in New York City and the next president do trade sanctions on two Asian countries, that is making better quality products than the USA, probably you’ll be thankful on jacking up the price on a cup of joe if one country won’t buy Boeing products.

On the side of unfair treatment of migrants yes, his focus in on jobs, yet the US might even have to face competitors not just trade with certain products, but also other countries that don’t want to buy certain American products and probably example to say tariffs on coffee in that case, for example one country favors buying a product from a competitor and then decide to raise the price for a cup of joe. As to say Boeing yet need to protect that company seems for example China’s COMAC comes to the picture, and a new comer from Japan comes along. Then a crash of a Boeing 737 MAX hits Japan and then you have three countries banning Boeing products, so what would you do or what would I do see a president that save American jobs in that sector and vote for him. Probably that president says that he will do trade sanctions on Japan and China of not selling their airplanes minus Airbus from Europe having a factory in Alabama, but I vote for that candidate in a heartbeat. Then if that president where to do trade sanctions in two countries and add coffee tax on one country for not buying Boeing planes. Then be happy that the president I vote for is doing the right thing, even though on the next day you see your mom dies in a plane crash at New York City involving with a Boeing 737 MAX because that president is doing what is best to save American jobs.
