This is a test video! I want to see if I can make a 360/VR video with "amibsonic" four-channel sound rather than the usual stereo output. I'm not sure how it will work when you play it back...
The GoPro Hero Max as the option to record in four-channel audio, but basically it's a PITA to access it and get it into a video editor to work with. Multiple steps are required and it's very frustrating that GoPro's own video player cannot export the four-channel audio itself even though it has the option in the interface to do it (which you can't even switch on!!)
Anyway using the FFMPEG command-line utility and following RU-vid instructions, and then after about seven failed attempts I found a way of doing it! I'm curious to see if it will work when I upload a video with four-channel sound to RU-vid.
I guess it would work best with a VR headset such as an Oculus/Meta Quest and I imagine that as you look around, the sound will seem more realistic if a bike overtakes me or vice versa. Another good way would be watching this on a mobile device I think... when you move the device around, it changes your point of view (POV) and again the audio will be more realistic...
Finally, if you are watching this on a PC or TV hooked up to a surround sound system, you should be able to hear bikes ahead and behind me, from the left and from the right!! I do have a surround system myself but my hearing is not great at the moment (don't ask as I don't want to bore you) and it's hard to tell if it's working.
Even if it does work, chances are the sound of the R1 is probably going to drown out the other nearby bikes and it was a quiet track day...
Other points; its' recommended that Horizon Level and World Lock are not enabled when generating the video from the GoPro software if you are trying to output four-channel sound, because the sound and the video may go out of alignment otherwise... so I'm sorry that the horizon tilts to the left and right, which you wouldn't usually want to see in a 360/VR motorbike video, if you are watching this in a VR headset. The 360 camera would ideally need to be on a gimbal so it could stay upright... but I'm not made of money! 😂
Also, you might ask, why am I running adverts in this video if it just a test (you money-grabbing !$^"%). Well I'm not - at the moment - but You Tube may choose to put ads in this video and there is nothing I can do to stop it.
I will get you more video from the day at some point in the near future... the weather was perfect and the Yamaha R1 is an amazing bike to ride around Donington!
