You sir did a fabulous job putting this project together. One of the hardest things to do sometimes is taking your time and completing the project to your best ability when you just want to get it together and use it. However you took your time obviously and It came out great.
I'm so glad I finally found a video of one of these actually being driven and put through the paces! Definitely building one now! Great job with making the video
Super cool ! Im thinking of making one myself, but i will keep the suspension I believe it will make it less bouncy and more contolable when loaded. Great work.
Awesome Video! Thanks for the inspiration. Just saw a SnowDog video, but I just can't part with $3k. I love to tinker, so this was right up my alley. I have a junk Yamaha Ovation that will work perfect for this!
Very, very, awesome, Nic! Cool build! The old snowmobile must have had a 20 inch track then? You should do a follow up vid showing after impressions about what worked well and what you would change if you were to do it over again.
I've just bought a donor sled and new engine to start building a similar project. What size sprockets did you end up using and what's your top speed? Thanks!
I liked and subbed I picked up 4 Polaris 500 indys...long and wide tracks and I was thinking of making a side by side track (dual tracks one motor driven thru a differential and keep the gear box ...hi...low and reverse....and sit in the middle...doesn't need to be fast....a some how let them FLOAT off some pivot not rigid.... great build......
Was/am considering building either an entirely new maybe 1” steel tube frame to carry the track components, and one concern is incorporating a boxed in storage area top of the track, pails, auger, maybe a 3 man flip over hut, whatever extra weight is over top that track in my mind will make for tougher steering but should give better traction rather then having no weight over track. Now see if I was still your age it would be loaded down with beer and likely some whiskey too haha.
Great job! I am watching this video because I am building one also. I found a dead snowmobile I had planned to use, but now I'm told two tracks are better than just one. Also the sled runners inside the tracks limit it to snow use only. Two tracks with basically wheel barrel wheels inside can be used in the summer too. What size engine did you use? I bought one through Northern Tools 420cc. This video was back in January, did you find any problems or anything you would change? How do you like it now that you have used it more?
OMG'sh! 😂😅😂 I love fishing but that looks like too much fun! Not sure if I would get any fishing done with that cool toy around. 😂😅😂👍🎉🎊🎉 Now ya just need a long rope a snow sled and drag them behind across the frozen lake. 😂😂😂
What primary and secondary clutches were used? Were they princess auto or ordered from CV Tech? What tooth sprockets were used for the exposed chain drive. From Northern MB and hoping to build something like this with a high school motors class. Thanks for the info.
Very interesting build. Without a ski does it get enough lift for deep powder snow ? I'm not interested in great speed but where I live we get VERY deep snow. Atb
Hey Nic, when she was struggling up that hill a lil in the video was it power related or weight related? Awesome build..... looking for my donor sled now!!
I can get one locally. I been brainstorming how to outfit a sled to transport my friend whos handicapped ( a gimper) without too much unstableness which would be disasterouse and painfull. but I could use a means of hauling him rather than trying to traverse a wheelchair guy over ruts, ice crust and general winter terrain. And still haul the 2 shelters and all the gear. Looking for Ideas.
Nice build nic. Did you end up playing with the final drive sprocket size ? Like start with a 10 tooth and work your way up ? Would be awesome to incorporate a low/high and reverse transmission of some kind, maybe off a lawn tractor, some red nic engineering !! More vids please. There are a lot of people out there that are interested in building something that is economical, reliable and fairly cheap to build . For myself I would like to build one for dragging logs out of the Bush, nothing fast just a lot of torque.
I plan to try and build one this summer using a old Arctic Cat Jag 3000 . Don't suppose you would any hints on what to look out for . Just waiting for spring to get here in Manitoba
Did you have to add a keyway to the jackshaft for the final drive gear? Looks about a 12T gear? I am just beginning my conversion from an 89 ski doo mx with a lifan 6.5hp motor, a cvt clutch kit, I just haven't picked a drive gear yet
Gets me into most areas for the day without refill. Though I usually bring a little extra fuel in a small tank. Like camp lake etc. If you end up playing around lots, then you would want the extra
I built almost the same thing i used an 8hp briggs from a snow blower with the 110v electric start and swaped the starter to 12v....if you buy new i would get the winter motor
i'm not 100% sure right now, (its in storage) but i know it was the largest i could fit between the shaft and the tunnel with the chain on. and i believe there was only one inch of clearance between the shaft and deck
