For the longest time, I've always thought the same as you described but during the same race, we (Visceral 245) successfully quadrupled Mediums in the middle of the night with no issues whatsoever and I also did my fastest lap of the race in 1:34.8, at the end of my second stint. With normal daytime temperatures on the server tripling Mediums would get you to around 30% FL, while in the case presented I was easily above 50% at the end of the third stint. The car was quicker overall because of the cooler conditions and I wasn't slouching at all.
