Trackday Prep No 1. - Ducati 1098S Oil Change

Following my track day at Silverstone National circuit on 11th June it was time for another oil and filter change as I am back at the GP circuit on the 26th June
I like to change the oil after every trackday/race weekend and the oil filter every other. It helps keep the engine in good nick and allows me to spot any potential problems quicker
Camera - GoPro 4 Silver
Oil - Castrol Power 1 racing 10W40
Oil Filter - Champion H301
Bike - Ducati 1098S
This is my first edited video so please bare with me, its a learning process. I have never spent so long doing a quick oil change

Just in case. It will be very interesting to see the collection of instruments required to be able to maintain Ducati 1098/1198 and similar. :) just an idea

​@@svyat1607, In addition to the standard tools: a set of sockets, torque wrenches (at least in the range of 5 - 210Nm) and much more. A special tool is required, the list of which is described in the service manual

Good video as always! I did notice at 11:15 that the positive cable connection to your starter is quite corroded. Hmmm......

Hi, important is also to remove the ring of the oil filter and completely to grease it before its installation. Sorry for my bad english!

Hi Daniele You can do it that way, the main point is to lubricate it so that it does not bind as you tighten it up and cause the ring to get damaged.

I have no idea why the hose clamp was added to the filter and how it is a safety measure, but good video.

Hi JT Wu, its fitted and lockwired to to stop the potential winding out of the filter. Its rare but is a racing requirement. Some oil filters come with a hex nut and facility to lockwire so this method would not be needed.

The highest cc in the isle of Bermuda is200 cc most bikes now are 150cc mostly scooters!! I had a triumph tiger 200cc back in the day mate I do have a 150cc scooter that I enjoy maintaining with these prices today she is thirteen years old our speed out here is only 45.07kph so our engine break in is longer

Hi bud, random question, have you ever had the amber light with the ! Symbol come on and stay on, and if so, what was the problem and how did you fix it? Great video as always 👌

Hi Rollin' Thunder I have never had it come up, but it is the Diagnostics light. You will need someone with a DDS to go in and check the fault and reset it. It could be one of the following things: -Fan relay -Starter Contactor -Battery Voltage - Just charge the battery!!!!! -Traction control if a Ducati fitted unit -Speed sensor -Immobiliser error -Can bus error By the way glad you enjoy the videos

DesmoWerx hi bud, thanks for the reply. I’ve done some research and it turns out that the dash is faulty. Apparently the dash is “bleeding” so it’s allowing light from other bulbs to shine through the same circuit 🤷‍♂️ but it’s not a major problem and there’s no error codes from the dash or ECU, thank god! Also just watched your most recent video, sucks that the bike let you down at the last minute, but there’s plenty of races ahead, keep it up 👌👌👌👌👌

great video bud. thanks for taking the time. not just on this video. new to Ducati so you've been a big help. is there a reason you don't go with the k&n filter. seems that it would make life easier since it has the hex on the end

Hi, It depends on what filters I have in stock, I find the hex attachment sometimes fails anyway so its not really that important to me in filter selection.

A regular oil filter wrench like for a spin on Chevy filter works perfectly. There’s no reason to have the hex.

Do you think it is mandatory to change the oil immediately after an amateur track day? Not racing group.

I do personally, however as a former racer I push the bike very hard. If you are not stressing the engine too much you should be okay. I tend to change every time just to check if there is any damage caused by the higher stresses applied on track.

I have a leak in my 1098, I feel it is a leak coming from left hand side of bike as oil is on case marks of sump, around the sump itself and coming out kickstand fairing hole. Could this be possible or is all oil gaskets, seal only on right hand side of the engine ? I have mugello at start of September so am anxious to get it done. Also I was told to use 15 w 50 fully synthetic but I see you are using 10 w 40 , is 15w 50 OK?

HI Wes, it could be from the alternator cover or a small leak from the oil cooler, this travels back and comes out in the area you refer to if the bike is ridden. The recommended oil is 15W 50 so you will be okay. The owners manual shows the ranges of oil viscosities you can use depending on the temperatures the bike will be used in. 😊

Found the leak,stripped thread bolt in the alternator cover and no sealant in the area also. Will try a longer bolt, see if there's any threads left in the depths of it..here's hoping

What caused the damage to that oil filter shell?

That is a Ducati trait that the filter is recessed into the sump, I can’t remove mine without destroying it unless you get a factory tool, And screwing back on is no cake either with oil all over the filter.
