Wow cutting those colored wires to the pins is the gift that just keeps on giving lol! Thank Goodness you have the smarts to get the schematics at least it narrows down the possibilities. Like playing Sherlock Holmes to figure out what the heck they got wrong wiring the poor old machine back to life again. Bravo Ron and you kept your cool like a cucumber.

That extra ball problem would make a great pinball tech challenge. I bet a lot of the best mechanics would give up. Great job Ron! What you have also done is made us realize that there are going to be problems that will take hours to fix and even try the patience of the most skillful mechanic and if we want to own and mess with these machines a lot of the pleasure has to be about fixing them as much as playing them.

Can't thank you enough for filming these repairs. I recently purchased my first pinball machine, a '71 Williams Jackpot (same as Williams Goldrush) and it had A LOT of issues. I don't have any experience in electronics, let alone pinball machines, but thanks to friendly guys like you I was able to fix all problems. And it was fun! Your videos pointed me so often in the right direction. Or inspired me to solutions I did not think of. So a big thumbs up and many thanks from the Netherlands!

I've seen the "hold on" thing before with carbon/dirt. Relay coils need less energy to hold than to initially trigger. Dust, moisture and solder splashes can act like a primitive resistor, allowing enough power to get through to keep the coil energised enough to hold, but not enough power to trip the relay if it is off. This game is a beauty. It needs a lot of help, but it will be worth it.
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 3 года назад
You know what i'm talking about then, it's a strange thing to find but can often be what is going on if you can't figure out anything else. I've seen it do it with flippers, you clean the flipper switch and the dust falls down between the two switches and lands on the bakelite... then when you use the switch, it will stay energized through the dust. Drives you crazy if you don't know to look for it :)
@EsotericArctos
@EsotericArctos 3 года назад
@@LyonsArcade Some of those old relay coils are very sensitive and the higher voltage makes it easier for dust to leak enough through. Still, I prefer those old coils to the modern stuff. Keep up the great work 🙂

I love when you feel you are chasing your tail on some of the problems. One time I had a screw jammed behind the jones plugs in the backbox touching two wires. I chased it for two days until I was going to pull the jones plugs off the backbox and it showed it's the ugly head, I pulled the screw out and the problem was solved. I never took any screws out so I don't know how it got there.
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 3 года назад
Stuff happens! On this one, there was a spring installed from the factory shorting out the lights when you started a 4 player game. If the light came on, it would make all the lights in the backbox dim for about 15 seconds then blow the fuse. The spring was touching both sides of the socket, it had to have shipped like that but nobody ever started a 4 player game I suppose.
@RetroGamingWithHopper
@RetroGamingWithHopper 3 года назад
@@LyonsArcade The I fixed every time you started a game it was like you tilted it. It just went black. Makes me wonder if that is why it was put on the shelf. I bought it from an old operator, it had about an inch of dust on it. But you know those are the fun ones to fix.

Seriously fantastic job there Ron, you have the patience of a saint!. It's amazing how one sees the same issues also in industrial electronics. The cascaded switches are like rudimentary logic gates & it reminds me of PLC ladder logic. One is thankful for the lamp & switch test functions on the newer pins. thks for always reading the schematics, As I'm always interested as I have to completely wire a (back box) S.S.deluxe a pitch and bat type pinball by williams I bought it as a puzzle missing the head and all cabinet's except the run man unit was all there. I purchased a original back box head only every thing gutted. been buy ing steppers a score reels ect got every thing now just have to wire it. From ebay I purchased dif.f colored wire. but couldn't find as many colored wires as williams manufacturing used. But as I studied the williams introduction to coin operated games I was wondering if thats a miss print or just written wrong, the area is where there stating a double make switch and they draw open switches I thought (make's) meaning was closed & break open just like it sounds break /open make / shut ???
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 2 года назад
Make means it connects, break means it opens... but when they draw the schematics, if it's a "make" switch, it would be drawn open because it hasn't closed yet. The schematics are drawn in game over position, so a switch that is supposed to close, wouldn't be closed yet. Thanks for watching Bill, good luck with your S.S. Deluxe, we will be doing a big Pitch & Bat later this year.
@toddament8035
@toddament8035 3 года назад
A friend of mine has a Gottlieb Golden Arrow and I can't figure out why the ball kicks out to the shooter after ball 5 when it goes to game over, I've studied the schematic for hours. I guess I'll have to go back and see what disables the kick-out coil. Lol
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 3 года назад
Might be a timing thing, sometimes if several switches are a little too close in series when they close they close a little faster than something else that's supposed to open and the timing gets off.... so before the one switch opens that's supposed to keep the ball from shooting out, the other switches have already closed and it shoots out just in time.

JOES CLASSIC, when you first turn on the pinball game the ball index relay is OFF or ON? when the ball index relay is turn On it will advance the ball count unit stepper motor giving you an extra ball? I'm not really sure what the ball index relay is doing to the ball count unit
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 3 года назад
When you turn the game on, the ball index relay is off. It turns on when you hit a score on the first ball.... if it's on, the ball count unit will step up 1 place at the end of the ball. If you have an extra ball, it doesn't allow the ball index relay to let the ball count until step up to the next ball (so you play the same ball again). When the ball falls in the outhole each time, it turns off the ball index relay. It turns back on as soon as you score something again.
@waynegram8907
@waynegram8907 3 года назад
@@LyonsArcade thanks for the help. When the ball falls in the outhole each time it should turn ON the ball index relay so the ball count unit will step up 1 place. I thought the ball count unit is counting the outhole balls also.

Why the Jones plugs aren't shown on the schematics?
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 3 года назад
Just to simplify things, they are really only showing you the logic lines, not the actual wires. so sometimes there are also a couple wires connected on a switch that go to two different things, but they don't show it like that, they might show the connection in the middle, or over by another switch, etc. Since the Jones plugs don't change how the logic connections are made it doesn't show them. It does show Jones plugs that are moveable, like the high score adjustments, or the 3/5 ball jumper, etc. because if you move them you move the logic signal.
@bobweiss8682
@bobweiss8682 3 года назад
@@LyonsArcade But by that logic, they shouldn't be showing wire colors, relay contact numbers, etc., as none of those effect the logic functions implemented. Guess I'm just used to industrial ladder logic diagrams, where things like terminal strips, connector pins, etc. are all shown.

@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 3 года назад
Usually yes normally open and normally connected (or closed), the 'normal' state of the relay is with the power off and it not energized, so in that state is that switch normally closed? Or is it normally open? Then when it pulls in, each switch on the relay should reverse, go from closed to open or open to closed.
