Hi Joe, here's your answer: your machine is from Switzerland (and so do I), operators here used this frequently. It is actually a "safe"; the pinball machines keys were stored inside; then a lock with a common key came on top of it to secure them (which you are missing). It allowed the operator to go anywhere on his locations with only one key and retrieve the machines keys directly on site. Hope this clarified it ;) And if any viewer comes to Switzerland, my pinball club www.shootagain-fribourg.com opens one WE every month!
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 4 года назад
Why would the operator not just change the locks on the front doors of the games to make them all the same lock? it seems much more expensive, and time consuming to drill a big hole in the side of the cabinet to put a key safe in that you still have to put a lock on!

@@LyonsArcade That one's easy: Security. If all the front doors had the same lock, then a thief would only need one key (and someone to keep the employees distracted, and no hidden cameras) and they could steal all the money. Especially if they made the effort to look like the guy who normally does that job. "Oh, he's sick today, I'm filling in for him."
@JamieVegas
@JamieVegas Год назад
@@SpearM3064 If all safes have the same lock (which they do) then all front door keys are equally accessible, so that is not a valid point. You're just moving the universal lock to the side of the machine. So, it's not added security. It's that all machines, including pinball, will have this universal key, whereas a universal key for the front door would be key type (pin tumbler, tubular, disc, etc.) specific to fit the cabinet, so they can't have a universal front door key for all types of machines, but they can have a universal safe key that stores all the different keys within the machine itself.

That's something german and it's called a Gauselmann key safe, what means that there supposed to be a cylinder in it wat holds all the keys of all the machine's on that location and that cylinder can be locked so only the serviceman on that location has acces for all the service keys. So in fact you're missing half of this safe👍
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 4 года назад
I believe that's it for sure... not sure why you'd need it though, seems ridiculous to me to drill a hole in the cabinet, install a safe, just to put a key for the front door on. Seems simpler to just put a new lock on the front door ($2.59)

@@LyonsArcade I guess it's more for puttin' the keys in of the jukebox and slotmachine's (rotamint, triomint called in germany) of that location so the service guy doesn't have to carry all the keys with him. @@LyonsArcade Most german locations had one machine with this key safe. It contained all keys for all the machines in that location, pinball, jukebox, slot machines. The serviceman had to carry only one key for all locations. That key was individual for the operator. When they took the one machine with the safe out of service, they removed the safe, leaving a hole in the wood that would be closed with metal covers, still available today. The safe went into the new machine.

@@LyonsArcade Perhaps it's considering selling on, you would have to change any lock back on the machine itself or you would then have a machine in the wild with a key to all your on site machines... so managing and not losing the original lock/key is an issue or your buying new locks and keys when you sell ? Also for whatever reason you may wish to prevent access to a specific machine (safety issue?)... you can essentially do this by removing the access key from the safe thus people with the safe key can't access it but still access all other machines you want them to.

The only thing I don't understand is, why not just change the locks on the doors, instead of drilling a hole, installing the safe, and keying all the safe locks the same? You'd think they'd just put the lock on the door instead of on the safe lock :)

This would of course simplify the work of criminals. The fact that there are different keys made their work difficult. But there were also public places. cinemas, pubs, swimming pools and snack bars. The key safe might just be so they could use secured collectors. That means you have one keyed-alike lock on all machines (your arcade location has "OWNER KEY"). Then you would have a "OWNER KEY" inside the key safe (putted on ONE machine only at that location).The secured collector, would have a "SAFE MASTER KEY" that would fit ALL arcade locations enroute. The secured collector, could then with one single key, go and collect all the arcade locations in one go. I think the tube is possible to unscrew from the inside, or it have an opening somewhere. So you could put the owner key inside without having a key to the cap. Think like the door tubes on some apartment doors, where you can put your apartment key so the landlord can access for service. The problem with using a keyed-alike lock on ALL arcade location, is that you as a single arcade owner, would be able to access ALL arcade location enroute, even those that you don't own. The reason this system were used, is that wafer locks are difficult to master key without introducing security risks. In TSA locks master keying are done by having 2 different profiles for the user key and master key, and then have a wafer with a cutout that is different on the left and right side. But that requires manufacturing a lot of wafers, it would actually require creating X * Y different wafers, where X is number of key positions, and Y is the number of key depths for a single position. (number of different wafers required: X*Y manufactured, and number of different key combinations become X^Y) Nowadays, in arcades that use secured collectors, they use a master keyed lock instead on the cabinet (ASSA DESMO). Secured collector then legally owns the lock/cylinder, and then the secured collector has 1 key that goes to ALL locations enroute, and the arcade owner has 1 (or more copies) of a key that goes to HIS machines ONLY. usually the wafer lock is removed and then stored inside the machine, so if machine changes owner, the original wafer lock can be replaced. Technician usually don't serve multiple arcade locations, so he have only OWNER KEY.

@SpearM3064
@SpearM3064 4 года назад
@Bob Toad Actually, if you're talking about arcade video games... no, they haven't banned those. Or pinball machines. They even have businesses that specialize in spare parts (Perth Arcade Machines, Just Pinball Sales, etc.) _Brendan was referring specifically to the cost of shipping a pinball machine to Australia. It would probably cost about $2,000 just for shipping._ So it isn't "can't get a pinball machine", it's "can't *afford* a pinball machine because of the cost of shipping". Now, as far as computer and console games go... yes, they did ban some of those for a while, because until 2013 they didn't have an equivalent to the M (Mature) or AO (Adults Only) ratings. If it wasn't suitable for age 15 or under, then it was "denied classification", which is not the same as banning it, but it might as well be. A game that has been denied classification can't be sold. When they (finally, after much lobbying) added an AO classification in 2013, they went back and re-evaluated some of those older games that had previously been banned.

Hi Ron - A request, if I may; I truly enjoy the the game demos you do for us (both pinball, and video), and I was wondering if you might consider, for the pinball demos, filming the gameplay with the playfield glass removed, so that the reflection of the backglass doesn't distract from the action. This may also afford you the opportunity to manually demonstrate certain features of the game(s), without having to rely on... let's go with luck... to activate a particular feature (By all means, when demonstrating actual gameplay, refrain from cheating in this manor). Thoughts?
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 4 года назад
I've thought about that and it's hard to find a good solution. There's 4 ways to do it and none of them are perfect because of the long nature of the playfield... you can film from directly above which takes a lot of rigging and is a p.i.t.a.... and then you have a bunch of dead space in the picture you have to fill with something else, or you can film it like I did with the glass on, in the dark which makes a reflection... or the glass on, with the lights on which I just don't really enjoy playing them like that, or I can take the glass off like you're suggesting but to be honest they are 0 fun to play like that because it messes the sound up. You can hear the flippers and all the coils fire much louder with the glass off and I just don't enjoy playing them that way.... I'm kind of test playing them when I play them, because usually we just finished them up for a customer or to go out the door so I like to play them kind of as they'll be played, glass on, everything buttoned up, the lights out, etc. but I understand it's not as good on video! Thanks for watching, I'll see what I can come up with.

@@LyonsArcade Hmmm... Perhaps a compromise, then? I, for one, would enjoy a single game (or two) played with the lights on, glass off, to show an overview of the playfield in action, and again, allow you to manually activate/demonstrate certain switches/sequences, and then a 'normal' play demonstration, with the glass on/lights off. It's up to you, of course (since it's your channel, and all... :-) ), but you might consider trying this, and ask your viewers what they think. Just a thought... I'll keep watching either way... ;-)

@@LyonsArcade Mucholocodawg's story reminds me of a pinball machine that we had in the student center at the university I attended. I discovered that the tilt sensor had been disconnected, so you could just pick up the whole front of the machine to keep the ball from going down the drain, or even score millions of points without ever using the flippers. Of course, your arms would get tired after a while, and there was always the risk that someone from campus security might saunter past... (and I always worried about the extra stress being put on the back legs of the machine, which is why I never took advantage of it.)
