Just bought Reaper, and subbed to your channel. I'm recording my brother-in-laws band using 8 mics on his drums, and gonna have to comp a few parts so great info here. BTW... my guitar buddy Mike looks so much like you it's uncanny, like brothers from another mother type resemblance lol. Anyway, can't wait to show him your channel.

While my AMAZING cameo added incredible value to the video, you cover some great stuff. I have to give lanes a deeper look. More than that, the video is a demonstration of how little I've optimized my own workflow with actions, custom key commands, mouse modifiers, and just a better understanding of what Reaper has under the hood. In short, thank you for giving me a homework! ;-)

I would love to explore the possibility of instead of using SWS snapshots, using fixed item lanes and takes in a cohesive system to be able to save each part of the process of the production. As the lanes can be renamed, having a custom action that takes the lane, names it "comp" or something, duplicates it, then moves it to "edit" or something. So that you can easily look at each step of the editing process, like for vocals, having a "comp" lane, then a "tuned" lane, then a "synced" lane, (like with realign or vocalign), and then a final glued version of it all which is what you show on the track. Right now my thought would be to save an SWS snapshot after each step of that process, but that makes recalling and going back a hassle sometimes if you only need a specific part, but with fixed item lanes, if part of a sync or tuning went wrong, its easy to comp it with a previous version that didn't have that processing on it then move on

i tend to do a "save as" when i move to a different phase in the process, i.e., song-bass tracking, song - guitar tracking, song - vocal editing, etc. This way, my automatic backups inherit the same project name and are timestamped. Not exactly what you are looking for, but for me, it gives me plenty of "save states" to go back to for any phase of the project. NOTE: If you go this route, be sure to uncheck the "create subfolder" part for each phase, as each project file will still access the same audio files in the project directory.

@@LetsTalkAboutReaper I certainly think this is a good way of going about it. Interesting to explore it however. Thanks for all the great content you make!

Thanks Myk, this is awesome and I look forward to trying it. I always track real drums. I need to watch your other video and use more monitor mixing via the routing. I start and stop Reaper via my phone when I’m recording drums. If I could also use it to mix the different elements of what I am monitoring, that would be huge. Also, hope you are getting over whatever is causing you to reach for cough drops. Have another cup of coffee. It’ll be good for you!

DUDE, THAT IS AMAZING!!! And that gave me a crazy idea! What if I took the signal from this project and sent it to a new project (on another tab) and hit record? Kenny Gioia has a video on that. Could I make a single take in this new project that would be a "collage" of a manual switching between lanes in the original project tab, just like if I was improvisating with "drum samples"?

Hi Myk, just wondering why you shift the whole performace when really just that first kick was out of time... anyways, great vid, thanks a lot!

I just like to make sure that i have a good starting point for all the different performances. It helps to prevent a glitch when looping back around and it pretty quick to do. Had i been working with this for reals, i would have been careful to make sure my snare top and bottom were lined up along with the overheads, and also make sure my room mics are aligned
@Smutjehannes
@Smutjehannes 9 месяцев назад
@@LetsTalkAboutReaper yes yes! the only thing I am critiquing is, that with an edit on that first BassDrum you could have left the feeling of the original performance intact. Now you're changing the timing of the whole performance when really what you want to correct for is only that first kick.

Thank you for these videos! I have a question, how can you set up the lanes for multitrack editing with takes from a previous recording session made with Reaper 6? Reaper 7 does not recognize everything in the previous session.
@LetsTalkAboutReaper

You can convert takes to fixed lanes, if you'd like. If this is not quite what you're asking, please join my Discord server so you can share some screenshots and help us to better understand the need and be able to help. ru-vid.comCs70Wle-BPM?feature=share Thanks for watching!

Hi. Thanks for the content, very useful. I just have one problem if maybe you can help me. I have all my tracks grouped like you said in the video, but when i try to edit items in lanes it only edits selected items and not all items in lane 1 for example. Sorry if my explanation isnt clear...if i select item on lane 1 it doesnt select other lanes 1... if someone can help me i'll be very happy :)
@LetsTalkAboutReaper

I might need to see some screenshots to be truly helpful, but my best guess is that you have the tracks grouped for media/razor edits, but do not have the option turned on in the right click menu of the grouping icon that says selecting one item selects the group. If this is not the case, hop on Discord and post some screenshots, and I would be glad to help. There should be a link in the description to join the Discord server, if you're not already a member

hey there, LOVE the video, i got a Question about the Headphone mix i just CAN'T wrap my head around: Let's say i want to make a Pre-Fader Hardware output send on my tracks (Or Cue Bus) for a headphone Mix like you did. I am Recording an artist and now i want to listen to one of the tracks in solo for whatever reason, but i DON'T want the Headphone Mix to be affected by this (obviously) Is there a Solution for this where i DON'T have to duplicate my tracks (i want my session to still be nice and tidy) I know that Pro Tools can do this and other Daws can do this as well Cheers :D
@LetsTalkAboutReaper
@LetsTalkAboutReaper 9 месяцев назад
if i understand the question, this can be accomplished with Solo Defeat on the headphone mix track. Right click the Solo button on the headphone mix track and you should see that option. i tested this morning on a project where i had a headphone mix for my drum monitor, and i was still able to hear everything sent to the headphone mix regardless of what was soloed in REAPER

@@LetsTalkAboutReaper Hey thanks for the Answer! Yes that makes sense, i am trying it right now and it still doesn't work the way i want it to, what could I be doing wrong? my Setup: A Track Called "HP" which sends on Output 7-8 on my interface (Audient EVO 16) my drum bus and my Guitar bus are sending to that track (Pre-Fader, Post FX) The HP track is on Solo defeat and i can still hear it on the Headphones when I am soloing something

Did you group your tracks using the "media/razor edit lead and follow" options? Check my recent live streams, I did one on Thanksgiving where I edited drums. Skim through that and the grouping is explained
