Nice video. I have a 95' MF231 with the 232 front end loader. I was truly blessed to get this setup when we took over the old family homestead. The tractor was my uncle's, then the property was sold, but the man who bought it sourced and installed that 232 front loader. Then I bought the property back and the tractor came with it. Seeing this video helps confirm the blessing of that tractor and the rare setup that it is. Less than 400 hours right now!

Wow, that is awesome. I did originally look for a 232 loader but didn’t have any luck anywhere within reasonable distance to find one. Then I looked at the aftermarket ones and was shocked at how much they were. I love the new Kioti, but the 231 is still a strong workhorse and I’m so glad I decided to keep it.

I really enjoyed this video. I just got a MF 231 that is pretty beat up so looking at the way you have taken care of yours is joy and reference for me. I like to se that despite having a modern tractor you still take pride on the old Massey. Great video, thank you.

Just realized that I forgot to mention that one of the main things that is present on the Kioti and of course all newer tractors above 25hp is the regen process. No worries about that present on the older tractors.

I have the 1989 version of the 231. Everything you said is spot on. Absolutely love the Perkins engine. Easy to maintain. Ole girl is a diesel sipper. Great for now since it’s over $5 a gallon in my area. Mostly for use of hay rake, tedder, and rotary cutter. Been a good tractor. Biggest complaints are weak lift, and operator station is difficult to get on and off. (Could be due to the flat fenders on mine)

I have a 95, I agree with everything you said. Getting into the operators station is a PITA with the square fenders. That Perkins is rock solid.

I’ve had a 230, 231, 240, 253, and a 255. I loved the 230, 240, and 255 because they had the ergonomic pedals. The 231 ran great like the rest of them, but if you wear over a size 10 shoe and had flat fenders, you had to work to get inside of it. Also, the handbrake would rust up if not used regularly. I used the 253 today. It has been a real workhorse so far. Lasted almost 16 hours on a tank of diesel bush hogging. Love those Perkins engines!

Awesome tractors you have had. I grew up on Massey’s and have always loved them. And you are right about the Perkins engines, they are very fuel efficient. With today’s fuel prices, that’s a good thing. Thanks for watching.

A 130 Massey can lift 2,213 lbs on the 3 path, A 135 Massey which would be closer to the weight and HP of a 231 is 1293 kg or 2850 lbs. The relief on all these tractors are set at 3000 psi.
@backyardcountrylivin1514
@backyardcountrylivin1514 2 года назад
Hi Dennis, thanks for watching and the feedback on the lift capacity. We had a 135 when I was growing up and I always thought that the lift system was very robust. Pretty sure you are correct as you stated that the 231 is close to the 135 so the lift specs should be about the same. Thanks again.

I bought a used early 90s MF 231 with 232 loader, box blade, disc setup, front forks, argriX brush hog, and a grader/scraper blade for $4500. Hydraulics were not working and the 3 point hitch wasn't working. Lots of butchered wiring and had to replace a bunch of parts and 3 months in the shop I now have a functioning tractor that works completely for just under 10k. I couldn't touch that with a newer tractor! It's a workhorse and a great tractor for a farm agriculture use!

Awesome. Glad you were able to get her fixed up and I'm sure it will give you many years of good service. Like you said, it's a real workhorse and a great tractor. There are a lot of jobs that I prefer the ol MF-231 over my newer tractor. Thanks for checking out the video and commenting. Happy 4th of July.

Hi Richard. I had wondered what that was as well. I used to think it was just a standard 12 volt power plug, but not the case. This is how it is described in the owner’s manual. (Auxiliary Power Socket - a 10 amp power socket for use with an inspection light or warning light. It requires a standard continental single pin plug). Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

It’s real close. MF has the advantage with Ag tires, gear transmission and it’s heavier. But Kioti is 4WD. I would have to give the edge to the MF. Gear transmission has more torque. Thanks for checking it out and commenting.

Comparing new tanks to old is very incorrect. Your taking about a machine that is capable of taking out a target from miles away to a old machine that can only shoot a few miles. But as far as the tractors go, old ones were built to be used for long periods a and simple. You knew what you were doing with it so the makers specifically targeted the market. Nowadays you “could” do anything you want with one tractor “plow fields, now grass, dig a foundation for a house” but how fast and how efficient you can do that is very different. Utility tractors are the jack of all trades, but master of none. The row crop tractor was built for the fields. Thank you for the video sir. You have helped to give me new insight on what I need out of a piece of equipment.

I owned the 230 for many years. It is a work horse tractor. Its weight at 4000 lbs with no ballast made it a very efficient tractor. With ballast which adds over eight hundred pounds in 13.6 x 28 tires this tractor out weighs the Kioti with ballast and front end loader by 600 lbs.(approximate of course)

Anyone know about the hydraulic system on the 231? My hydraulics are moving very very very slow. Front loader and back..
@backyardcountrylivin1514
@backyardcountrylivin1514 Год назад
I’m sure you’ve probably already checked the hydraulic fluid level. There is a strainer under a cover on bottom of tractor near the rear hydraulic drain plug. May want to check it, but I’m sure you will have to drain fluid out to check it. Check fluid to make sure it doesn’t have water in it. If all that checks out, it could be the hydraulic pump. Hope this helps.

My 1030 has a hydraulic adjustment knob just under the seat below the seat adjustment. They are very close together, and you can easily turn the worng one. Check that first.

im looking to purchase the MF321 thanks for a good review on them, do you have any complaints about the massey? Im replacing a mahindra 4500, and the massey looks to be the right machine for that. its only lacking the rear remote hydraulics but thats ok too. My kubota MX5200 rear hydraulics are nice and smooth just like they are supposed to be, so apparently the kioti is just less refined with their valving.

No complaints whatsoever. Mine is a 1998 model, but i bought it used back in 2008. It has been a real workhorse. Use it mostly for brushhogging, discing the garden, and with the land leveler. The 3 point lift is far superior than the Kioti's. It operates much smoother and has more lifting power. I grew up with Massey's on the small farm and they were always reliable for us. The Perkins engine is awesome. I feel pretty sure it uses less fuel than the Kioti, even though it has 3 more horsepower. Anyway, good luck with your purchase and i hope it serves you well. Let me know what you think if you do end up getting one.

@@backyardcountrylivin1514 I got the 231, its a E code so its 1996 year model, it has aprox 950hrs on it, it looks great and runs perfect. the sheetmetal is straight, the tires are nearly new. all it needs is a full service. I ran it with my 6ft finish mower and it pulls it like it aint even there. I paid $7k i feel it was a fair price.

@@MrChevelle83 Yes, sounds like you got a great deal. That's pretty low hours, it should last you a long time. Mine has a little over a 1000 hrs. I pull a 6ft brush hog and like you said it handles it with no problem. I think you will really like it. Good luck with it.

A lot Of MF Brochures don't list the 3 point hitch capacity on tractors with 3 cylinder Perkins engines, but I did find a brochure which listed the capacity of a MF 230 as 2600 pounds (per SAE J715B).
@backyardcountrylivin1514
@backyardcountrylivin1514 11 месяцев назад
Thanks for the info. That sounds about right. Another viewer said a MF-135 was around 2850lbs which was similar to the MF-231 in weigh. So I think the 2600 to 2800 range would be pretty close. Don’t understand why they didn’t list it in the specs on the brochures. Thanks for checking out the video and commenting.

I have a full MF product line brochure for 1979. The smallest tractor where the lift capacity is listed is a MF 255 with 3800 pounds. This is a 52 PTO HP tractor with a 236 CI Perkins. I guess they thought that smaller tractors would not be used with any significant implements.

Yes, priced two different aftermarket loaders for the 231 that were around $8500. Then the 231 has no hydraulic connections, so by the time you add it all together you are looking at close to 10k. It was around 2 years ago when I was pricing it, so I’m sure it would be more now.
