Tractor Pulling with the 16-48 Russell Steamer

EDIT: To those that keep commenting that the weight box doesn't move! Believe it or not, the weight box does actually increase. Here's some evidence. First off, notice the sound of the tractor, it starts off quieter and smooth and eventually gets loud sharp barks by the end of the pull. That in itself is distinct evidence of a increasing load. Secondly, weight sleds don't just use the weight box to increase drag, they also have a mechanism that pulls the front of the sled down against the skid, raising the rear and transferring weight to the front. Last, and most visible, look @ 4:00, at the front of the sled is a large, black sprocket that starts turning. This is the sprocket that draws the weight up the sled. Why would it be letting the box back down if it never moved in the first place?
Yes, the box moves. Yes, the sled was functional. No, the sled was not made easy just for the steamer. It was on the exact same setup as it had been used minutes earlier for other professional class antique tractor pulls.
-
Wow! The camera does not do this thing one bit of justice! This past weekend, we had the privilege of running a 16-48 Russell steam tractor, built ~1912, in a local tractor/sled pull. This was the first time the tractor had ever tried pulling a sled and it did not disappoint us! At ~105psi, it pulled 274.99ft at its top speed of 2.2mph. I do not know what the weight was on the sled but they didn't go easy on us. Even though this tractor weighs over 22,000lbs, we lifted the front end off the ground on another run! The pull was run by the Oregon Tractor Pullers and was held at Alan Schurman's "Schurman's Iron Ranch" in Ridgefield, Washington. Alan is also the owner of this steam engine and several others.
I have a couple more videos that I'll get up as I can.

It doesn't have the sound of a V8, but that steam tractor is deceptively powerful. It always amazes me to see them quietly drag those sleds all the way to the end of the run, appearing not to even break a sweat, while internal combustion tractors blow engines up, break transmissions and drive trains.

It's amazing what a 50:1 gear ratio will do. Also, a single-cylinder double acting steam piston has as many power strokes as a four cylinder four-stroker per rev (every stroke is a power stroke).

You might not think so if you had to fuel it and maintain it and had lots of work to do! There is a good reaon why steam was replaced by the internal combustion engine on land, sea and and rail! They are grate for exhibitions and tractor shows but they are a lot of work! But they are the engines that brought in the industrial age! Actually horses were still in wide use in the era of steam and even the early combustion engines!

Up until steam most thrashing, hulling, milling, pumping was by hand. Maybe a little by animal, wind and water. It really liberated a lot of people from back breaking work. It took internal combustion to really spread power though. By 1900 farmers were belting up washing machines of engines. I think that’s how MayTag entered the market.

The thing to remember is that these things have horsepower ratings lower than "a preschool on a rope" but they generally have maximum torque ratings 3.5 to 4.5 their "running" torque rating related to the horsepower and they just don't stop. A triple expansion engine is, pound-for-pound the most powerful pulling engine we have in the world. Built to modern standards one the size/mass of an SD90MAC would have around 5800hp and more than 10,000ft/lbs of torque at the drivetrain.

Even the weakest steam cars have more torque than a 550hp diesel. Steam may be slow and old, but they're carbon neutral when running on wood and are probably the best option for someone living out in Alaska or somewhere distant like that. Back during the early 20th century there were some railroads in the eastern US who used locomotives with compound cylinders. They developed tremendous tractive effort and were well suited to pulling the slow, heavy coal trains they were meant for, but they were restricted to low speeds because the compound cylinders developed unacceptable vibrations at higher speeds.

i would love to own piece of history like that . the power they have is crazzzyyyyy due to every stroke is a power stroke piston going up an down all power! believe it or not but that thing is just off the idle a tad bit. can run them harder bbut for shorter distance obviously an i know people dont want to hurt it when doing something like that. check out the 110 case road loco if your going down a rabbit hole of tractors an old machinery
