In this video Big Tractor Power is out in the field with four classic tractors plowing to demonstrate what fall tillage looked and sounded like in the mid-1970's on a large farming operation. This video shares the sights and sounds of fall tillage in Central, Illinois. Viewers will see this tillage team working side by side in the field. Watch for a 125 pto hp 1975 JOHN DEERE 4430 tractor on a 4-16 International 720 plow, a 113 pto hp 1969 INTERNATIONAL 1256 Turbo tractor on a 5-18 International 720 plow, a 161 pto hp 1976 INTERNATIONAL 1566 tractor on a 6-18 International 720 plow and a 320 hp 1974 STEIGER Turbo Tiger 4wd tractor on an 8-18 CASE 700 plow.

Great video !! Always did fall tillage started when I was a kid learning from my Dad and Uncle on a two cylinder John Deere with a trailer play on the contour strips on our west central Wisconsin farm. Then to semi mounted plows and chisel plows to finally mostly not till.. thanks for the memories..

Love that Steiger... We had one and there was nothing it struggled to pull thru the field. Really brings back memories having a 1206 & 1256 Turbo, just a phenomenal pair of tractors... something very genuine and wholesome about farming back in the 70’s; the best of times.

I could watch the IH 1566 Black Stripe & IH 1256 all day. Makes me wish I could've been there to smell the freshly turned dirt & diesel. Thanks for sharing. Hope you & your family have a Happy Thanksgiving.

There's just something so satisfying about moldboard plowing, I always loved plowing, rarely do it anymore, but when we do I really enjoy it

Agreed, I only plow a couple acres every year with an IH 450 3 bottom, but I love everything about it. From the smell of the soil, getting the furrows rolled perfectly, even to the sound when you hit a rock and those IH auto trips go off. Love it.

Plowing was my favorite job on the farm, just love to watch the soil turn over. At night it was even better. Great memories of 70+ years ago. Thanks for the sights and sounds.....

Oh yes miss them days oliver 1850 with 6/16 trip bottom and 1655 with 4/16 trip bottom 3rd gear direct drive with both nothing like the smell fresh turned dirt

Awesome video! My neighbor up in the southern tier of New York had plow daysFrom 2015 to 2019. Neighbors from all over would come and they would plow a field. Tractors ranged from a John Deere 530 to a Steiger pulling a bottom plow. After the field was done we would go to his farm and have a dish to pass. It was great.

Love old iron, grew up with the oldies. Only time we used a plow was to turn old pasture. Watch almost every video you put out. Keep em coming(33 year old part time farmer)

Awesome video!!! Love old iron. Worked at a Case/ Steiger dealer in the mid to late 70’s an Allis Chalmers dealer hired me before I graduated high school an later on I worked at a John Deere dealer for 14 years. Love the snap-on duals on the cad International. At 64 I still love working on old iron an construction equipment Thank you again

All the tractor s featured in this looked and worked very impressive, but that old Tiger which looked cosmetically rough appear ed to be mechanically very strong and matched along effortlessly with the plow attached to it ,all cool great machines and a excellent video

My dad had a CASE 2090 tractor with a 4 bottom moldboard plow when I was growing up in the early 80's man that was a rough ride as a kid lol!!!

Learned to plow on a D17 3 bottom snap coupler. Loved to plow but the AC plow didn't work to well in cornstocks. Had many "discussions" when they would plug up......

I am finishing plowing tomorrow with 1255 Case 1986' with 4-16 custom build plow (Corona virus delay the work but thankfully weather is good here in Greece)

Awesome video! One pass and all corn stubble is 6 inches under soil and turning into compost, instead of disking it 4 times to break the stubble down and fight with the trash on top of the soil next spring👌

I have always like watching moldboard plowing. I'm not sure if that form of tillage was ever common here in Louisiana, my Dad always used a disk, field cultivator/digger depending on your region or a subsoiler. I grew up around Case,International and John Deere tractors so I am one of the few people that can really choose one over the other. I will say the 5488 International, 2590 Case and 4755 John Deere were my favorites.

Well, here in Poland we plowing every year after year, for seedbed or before winter time, Plowing is still a very popular cultivation method in Poland and in Europe in general.

I think if you liked plowing, then you liked all parts of working ground. I rode on the tractor for a lot of plowing but was allowed to disc and harrow on my own.

I have great nightmares of plowing. Field was so full of rocks that I would have to stop after every round to tighten up the plow lays and frogs on most of the 8 bottoms. Fastest speed was 4.2 mph.

@@bigtractorpower Oh, I know...and honestly, in dealer literature only is where I've seen the black trimmed 7030. You know, the 70's...it was a horsepower race!! IH's, the 18, 19 and 20 series Oliver's, David Brown's...everybody had their entry in the muscle tractor market! What a time...I remember the old 426 in that 7030 had an almost angry sound! I loved it. These tractors feel better when they're worked hard.

Cut my teeth on plowing with a 1086 IH and a 5-18 IH automatic reset plow. Miss those days.

While I didn't cut my teeth with that combination, I did rack up many many hours in a 1086 and 5 -18 in the mid 80s. Fond memories, young and strong and running against the wind to borrow a phrase.

I spent many hours plowing with a 1976 IH 1066 in the early 80s, even though I greatly preferred to run the 1974 MF 1085.

@@bigtractorpower There was something about the engine and transmission sound of the 1066 that kept me on edge the entire time I ran it. I think the MF cab did a better job of deadening the sound and it had a much more comfortable seat, both of them were used extensively for fall tillage by my Dad and uncle. They kept the 1085 until my Dad retired in 2009.

I'm not sure what it is, maybe it was my youth being with my dad in his milk truck being on the farms, maybe it's the sharp lines but in my opinion these are 10x more beautiful then any of the new tractors out now

International, John Deere, Case, Minneapolis-Moline, Massey and Krause all had one way disk plows. These were sold in the wheat belt in Texas and Oklahoma. Corn is too heavy and thick for a disk plow to be effective.

In the 1970s we had a first generation J.D. 4020, pulling a 5 bottom John Deere hydraulic reset plow, when the plow frame by the tail-wheel wasn't breaking it was OK. The hydraulic reset worked well. But there was something weird about the plow itself, they had 14" bottoms that were spaced 16" apart. But actually turned soil OK, the tractor was able to pull it but had a hard time keeping the front wheels on the ground.

The 4020 is one of the all time greats. John Deere tillage did not have the best reputation in the 70’s. International and White Farm Equipmemt pretty well dominated tillage sales back then.

@@bigtractorpower,, seemed to be the situation, our upgrade went to a Farmall 856 & I think it was a "White" 4-18" spring reset plow. We put 18.4x34 radial tires on the 856, such an improvement ! !

Nellson Stout, where I’m from in Mid Michigan majority of us still pull moldboard plows. The rest have rippers. No minimum till or non-till around here
