On Crystal if you continued right to the third Nurse she is standing in front of a time capsule machine, the method Gamefreak designed to trade between Gen 1and Gen 2. The option though only becomes available after making it to Ecruteak City in Gold, Silver and Crystal and meeting Bill. It also has some limitations such as Gen 2 exclusive Pokemon cant trade to Gen 1 as they didn't ''exist'' in the past. Cross gen battling isn't available also.
I would love to see Russ do a follow up on this to see if the time capsule trading works. I use to catch low level Pidgy or Spearow to trade because they also had very basic move sets.
To be fair, Russ has said he's "too old to have really been into Pokemon back in the day" though he doesn't look much older than me (31) and I adored gen 1&2
I agree! If Garlic OS 2.0 comes out which is set to become a multiple device OS and includes this, we might that there. Until then JELOS did something similiar recently for which Russ also made a video.
@@TarikA Well the core is in RetroArch, so it should have no problem working with another device, though it may need official support for the quick hosting and quick joining netplay features for Pokemon specifically. I hope they support it. Quick Netplay hosting/joining is already neat, but this is even better.
@@Lucifronz Sure, in the end it's RetroArch and the Dual TGB core that provide this functionaliy. But it's the special scripts of the Onion and Jelos teams and do some magic in the background to make it that user friendly and you're right, unless RetroArch doesn't implement that themselves, it won't become any easier.
Actually, you can trade between the gameboy and gameboy color games. In the gameboy color games you just need to play up to a certain point in the gameboy color games until the time machine is unlocked, after that the process is the same.
@@CHICKENmcNUGGIESMydude I guess I should have expanded: a great selling point" to me" lol. Actually one of my friends who I recently was talking to about getting him his first retro device and I mentioned the miyoo mini + and the retroid pocket 2S and some of the + and - of each..... And he actually really liked the idea of this ad hoc gameplay (along with the pocket size and retro design style) of the miyoo mini+ and preferred it to the 2S. So for a casual player it seems interesting as well (even if 2S has Bluetooth and can support controllers and HDMI to put on tv screen and play 2 players like that lol).
@@CHICKENmcNUGGIESMydude It's a pretty big selling point for people who care. I don't think it'll draw in large crowds far and wide, let's be real, but for someone who loves Pokemon and is already looking at these devices? _It absolutely matters._ It's like buying a movie ticket and realizing you get popcorn, soda and candy of your choice for free. If you were likely going to make the purchase to begin with, you definitely will after.
Thanks to this feature, I've convinced my friend to buy a Miyoo Mini +. Love this, now we can play Streets of Rage 2 like we did when we were kids, as well as a bunch of other 2 player gems
Hey! I'm XK and I coded EN and EN Pokémon.. Aemii shared the link earlier. Thanks for covering this, im glad it's getting some coverage! Just to let people know who have commented saying your saves will be deleted, they aren't.. they're backed up as part of the process setting up the session & they're in the TGB Dual folder. Which means if you then start the game in Gambatte your save will not be opened as it's in the TGB dual save folder. It's up to the user to move their saves and that's how it'll stay. TGB dual is the only core that supports doing this so that's why I use it in ENP. Thanks & take care! Also edit: it should work for other games but there's not many I've tested on Also: no GBA. We don't have a link cable GBA core 👍
Hi dude, I'm trying to utilize this on we moved are ROMs to the TGB daul save folder. however, every time we start we are told one of us is missing a save file any tips would greatly help 👍
Doesn't have a real time clock so any times events or stuff that requires the hardware clock will work. Like day time and night evolutions and picking berries.
I wish the cross-platform compatibility would be available both here and on Retroarch, that would make the Pokemon emulation on handheld devices complete. Making this working through all the different handhelds, no matter if Linux, Android or Windows based, would be a dream.
Well, theoretically it's already possible. The (super smart) Onion OS devs only automated a script to "magically" do stuff like the host netplay, join netplay and disable the second screen on device 1 and the first screen on device 2 plus a few other things. Imho all that that script does should be implemented right into RetroArch or at least the core settings of the TGB Dual core. That'd be awesome and basically all wee need. That being said, if both handheld owners are on Android (for example with an RG405M and a Retroid Pocket 3 Plus), the Android apps "MyBoy" and "MyOldBoy" can be used for GBA and GB(C) link cable functionality.
Wow man, just came back for a vid after over a year and some change. So cool seeing how big you're growing!! And the quality is just getting better. Keep doing what you're doing mate, you're killing it!
There needs to be more clamshell SP style handhelds. The clamshell works so well to protect the screen. You don't need to be careful about how you carry it, just shove it in your pocket.
@@werejuststupidOnion for MM+ has an internal clock which does trigger the day/night cycle so you can still have timed events in game. Another point to MM+
This is so promising to finally see some progress on the Link cable feature over ad hoc networks! Do you think we could expect to see these features added to Retroarch for other devices, such as the Anbernic lines? I'd love to see this feature on my RG353V!
Great developments here :) I was hoping that full link cable support was implemented, so you can play Tetris against someone. But since they call the feature specifically Pokémon trading I doubt that works right as of yet. Link cables are hard to emulate over the network because it doesn't handle the delay/lag from network connections well.
You can trade to the past, you just have to go to the girl all the way to the right. Thats her soul purpose in the game lol. But you have to get to a certain point in the game to trade to the past.
Some emulators on android can emulate the link cable and load up a second instance of the game and then you can trade with yourself locally. For example both the pizzaboy emulators do this. I really hope something like this can be implemented rather than relying on another physical device
Ooo that’s cheeky. So what must be happening is, the save file is shared to the host, which emulates the 2 instances of Pokemon, and does the latency free linking between the instances in one device, while sending over the screen buffer over the wifi as hoc network back to the client device and once the trade is done it sends the save file back and the client user is none the wiser that their file has been in fact sent over for a while. Amazing idea.
That is pretty nifty! Nobody misses the days of the tangled GameBoy Link Cables! I do wonder if there is a way to connect your Pokémon R/B/Y to like a rom of Pokémon Stadium 1 or 2? Basically, to emulate the use of the N64 Transfer Pak.
Actually, you can do cross-gen trades between 1 and 2 games, you just can’t logically do it as-is since Gen-2 canonically takes place 2 years after Gen-1 (making it, not B2W2, the first sequel Pokémon games) so you need to first find Bill so that he can help you harness the power of time travel for the purpose of sending a rat or bird to the future or past.
It's extremely cool that you can use this RetroArch core for GB link cable content. I imagine since this is a special core that was converted for RetroArch that any compatible system with RetroArch should be able to use this feature, but I don't even have *one* of these systems yet, let alone two to test that out and see how it might be possible. OnionOS does seem to make it *very* easy to host and link up, though, and that's awesome. I sincerely hope that GarlicOS 2.0 is looking towards including this same feature if it doesn't have it already, as I definitely want it in the future for the RG35XX Plus. Even if I never end up having a chance to use it, there's some odd comfort in knowing that I *can* some day.
I hope so. I looked this core up and it's based on, what I think to be, an emulator made for GB so you can link trade... but whether or not that kind of core exists for GBA, I have no idea. There aren't even good ways to trade and use link cables in GBA, you have to use an entirely separate emulator that, in my opinion, was way more hassle than it was worth. But again, I *really* hope so. Because that would be cool.
Can you do a guide to get multiplayer working between the miyoo mini plus and a steamdeck? Im trying to trade pokemon but i cant get retroarch to stay connected
All we need is an offline RTC workaround for Pokémon and this will device will be perfect! Yes, I know rom patches exist. And the 4 hour time increment workaround. But it would be nice to play the Pokémon games as originally intended.
Russ, reason it’s saying you can’t trade to the past is because that Second Lady is for only for generation 2 game trading. You gotta use that third lady to do the trade because if I am correct the game does a check to see if GSC has gen 2 Pokémon in the party which won’t work on RBY. If the GSC save only has generation one Pokémon it allows you to trade with RBY 😊
Russ in Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal (Gen 2) you can only trade to Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow (Gen 1) using the Time Machine. On a Gen 2 game go all the way to the end of the 2nd floor of the PC and on Gen 1 just initiate a trade. You will now be able to trade Gen 1 Pokémon with Gen 1 moves to the past.
This would be great if they could use WiFi and allow various retro handhelds to connect and set up multiplayer. While this solution does work, there’s a lot of conditions to make this work. For example the likelihood to find two owners of the miyoo mini plus, with an updated onion OS and have the same game (not sure if the file name and etc matters).
If the emulator cores and the ROM files were the same, right now different Retroarch can do netplay on different OSes. I tried with the RG35xx Plus and it can connect with my Android smartphone via WiFi.
Link Cable emulation is that one thing I wish there was more research on. More than anything, I'd love to be able to play Kirby and the Amazing Mirror online, but GBA netplay is more or less nonexistent to my knowledge... at least until it comes to NSO.
To trade between Crystal and the original games (R/B/Y), you need to use the time machine on the right. It should be identical to the normal trading process, just talk to the lady on the far right in Crystal
Pokemon Gen 2 had a very specific Time Machine trade feature in order to trade with gen1 games. I believe it needs to be unlocked by defeating the elite 4
Very cool to see, might have to pick up a second Miyoo to play with my wife! Do you know if there is a way to play multiplayer link cable games? (Tetris for Gameboy, Dr. Mario, etc)
Bug report: you must go into the game section under each system and highlight the game for this to work - searching and starting a result will not work! OP can you please test and confirm?
Wait a min so I can't get extra moonstones I need those to complete the pokedex in emerald and this kinda sucks cause I'm trying to complete it for the first time
Ironic that I just started up Yellow after many years! I’m guessing this multiplayer option will also work with the arcade games you tried in a previous video? Hubby and I each have a Miyoo Mini Plus.
A few questions: 1. When you said you were starting from a downloaded save point, do you mean someone uploaded a saved point and you downloaded it, therefore you were starting the game at someone else save point? 2. Are these games pre-downloaded or do you have to find them and download them from the SD card? 3. What is Onion? 4. Does it have internal memory or is the memory strictly on an SD card? I really want one of these but I’m very curious on how user friendly they are. They seem rather user friendly however, I’m not very tech savvy anymore so I’m hoping it’s as simple as turning it on, picking the game you want to play and then pressing start. Lol I think my confusion would come from linking two of them together for co-op. The original Gameboys were so simple 😅
2.) there’s places where they sell these with a memory card full of roms. Don’t expect those roms to be good or accurate or whatever. If you can’t find roms, go and look up “vimms lair”.
Question: Not too tech-savvy but this channel seems to be perfect to get help. Would this possibly be considered the current best option if my goal is pretty much solely focused on simplicity, battery life and Pokemon specifically? Context: The last handheld and game I purchased were the DS and Pokemon Platinum, around 14 years ago when I was leaving high school. I've held on to them and all the other pokemon games that work with the DS because I intended it to be my "emergency console". I just got back from a weeklong trip and I don't know why but the battery seemed to die pretty quickly compared to what I'd have expected. I knew ROMs and emulators were a thing now and got curious if there were any handhelds dedicated to that purpose. Turns out YEAH THERE ARE A LOT ACTUALLY and I need help figuring out what I'm looking at.
DS emulation on this device isn't that great. If I were you, I'd just get a replacement battery for the DS. They're pretty cheap on amazon and other places and not that hard to replace.
@Retrogamecorps Hey, for trading/battling between Crystal (Gen2) and Yellow (Gen1), you talked to the wrong woman. You need to talk with the rightmost one from the Time Capsule. This is the only way it works originally, and also works for mGBA on Windows. Maybe trying it on Miyoo Mini Plus might work (unless stated otherwise by the firmware creators). Also, bear in mind that Time Capsule has lots of constraints before allowing trading/battling across different generations: - You must use only GEN1 pokémon. - Your GEN1 pokémons shouldn't learn and GEN2 moves. - Your pokémons shouldne't carry any items. - Only GEN1 battle rules are taken into consideration, meaning no Dark type, some move types are drawn back to normal instead, etc.
Does anyone know if it works for GBA Pokémon as well? My friend and I each bought one yesterday with the hopes of playing through Ruby/Saphire, and battling at the end of our play throughs. Any help is appreciated!
Huh. None of my Pokémon Roms show the netplay share/battle option. And if I change the core to TGB Dual all my savegames are gone (until I change it back to gambatte)
Hi Russ, for some reason, the Easy Net Play options do not appear for me in the App List on the Package Manager. I am running 4.3 stable build installed from OTA. Any ideas? Thank you
What would be really nice to play together is Zelda four swords. I hope they solve it somehow in the future. I don't know where or who to talk to about this.
Really want to know how to do this between my steam deck, and PC. Tempted to buy two of these miyoo mini's just to be able to complete my pokedex finally.
I don't suppose you could try the Atari Lynx cable emulation, if any? The original allowed more than two players to connect with daisy-chained cables, not that you were ever likely to find more than one person with a Lynx. :-)
This is great, can this be done between two RP3+ too, without a wifi router/hotspot? Or is this unique to the way it's setup in OnionOS/Retroarch the way it's doing it directly between the devices? Just thinking it makes a great travel option for many devices if it can be done without a 3rd device/wifi hub
@@SchmurtzAlex Thanks for the reply, good to know! Love the simplicity of it, really makes a huge difference when introducing people to these types of devices :)
Wow, this is a game-changer! So no need to join any hotspot or local wifi at all? This is Switch level voodoo! Ps: did you have to go to the Expert section to run SNES as the stick one used to not work with local MP?
So on the Pokemon trading part we changed the gamecore from the default Gambatte? Do you have to revert this after your done trading? Are we changing this permanently? What all does this affect/change on our game other than allowing the trading access?
So I am doing the Pokemon trade stuff, and everything is working up until the actual connection of the two devices. For me both devices will connect then say that the client has no save file and then disconnect. Both are running the same rom, and both have the saves in the correct area Saves > Current User> Saves > TGB Dual
Hey man I am new into this but noticed your videos and I need help with some questions. It is possible to have this trade and battles on anbernic rg35xx not the joystic one. I am deciding between this device and the anbernic one. I have a friend and I want to play with them. Since you have both devices could you try if it is possible to crossplay between two consoles? And it is possible to instal the gameboy rom to both devices so I get the old classic loading screen? Thanks
The question I have is if you're playing say secret of mana on the the she's for instance in 2 player which is a long game, how does this work with saving and save states? Can you save state or save game in game and continue later with the 2 player? In a perfect world it would allow you both to just turn the miyoo mini off automatically making a save state and turning it back on later and auto resuming like currently with single player but for 2 player too.
Hey question, I have a miyoo mini Plus and i just got a miyoo mini v4 are the onion OS exactly the same? Like what I be able to duplicate the card and put it into the V4 or would it have to have its own onion OS put on separately?
