Traded Tenere 700 for KTM 790 Adventure R

This video comes as a result of an earlier video I did with my friend Riley about his KTM 890 Adventure R and why he traded it in for a Tenere 700. Many of the people in the comments were not happy with his decision and felt that the KTM is the better of the two bikes.
So with that in mind I went to my friend Emily, a full time motorcycle journalist for Motorcycle Mojo and we discussed why she did the exact opposite of Riley. And why she felt the KTM was the bike to have in her garage and not the Tenere.

Had a T7 for almost 12k miles - awesome bike. The suspension is sub-par from the factory if you really want to push the bike. I'm 215 pounds and it bottomed way too easy when you were really pushing it off road. It's likely fine for most riders that only want to explore fire roads and gravel, but ask any experienced rider and they will tell you it is lacking compared to the KTM. I put race tech springs in mine and it helped a lot, but still couldn't touch the KTM. I rented an 890R to ride the WYBDR, and after a week on that bike I got home and sold my T7 and ordered a 2023. Yes, they have the odd nagging issue, but performance-wise there is just no comparison. Quick-Shifter, Cruise, Low-slung tanks - the bike rips both on and off road. No, the 890R is not made in China. The 890R i made in Austria, and the "re-launced" 790 series (both Duke and ADV R) are made in China by CFMoto. This is KTM's attempt to steal some of the lower priced market. As with everything on the internet, people will argue all day long about what the right choice is. The question is what is right FOR YOU. If the stock T7 suspension works perfectly for you and you find all else adequate, then guess what, you have a fun and insanely reliable bike on your hands. Congrats! If you want better suspension, better road manners, and over 100hp on tap and are willing to deal with KTMs nagging issues - then congrats, you have a bike that will give you serious smiles per mile. Look hard enough on here and you will find people that will tell you a TW200 is the ultimate "ADV" bike - what a wonderful world.

So how can the t7 be better if you have to upgrade ,you're fooling yourself
@jonathan6035
@jonathan6035 Год назад
@@cliffordzehmke5650 Well Clifford, that's just the thing - I never said the T7 was better nor worse. The message I was trying to convey was that typically there is no definitive right or wrong answer. The "right" bike to choose will depend upon the rider skill, what terrain they want to ride, how much they are willing to spend on maintenance, etc. For "ME" I had the T7, but decided I liked the KTM more for "MY" purposes. Thus, I sold the T7 and ordered a new 890R. IF you are looking for a black and white answer here, you won't get it from me on this topic. Did you even read what I wrote above? At what point did I say the T7 was "better"? Good day, sir.

Great video! Love my 790. Their Achilles heal however is the plastic L shaped fitting that connects the fuel line to the bottom of the fuel pump. I was able to break this by dropping the bike on a water bar mid hill climb and it left me stranded in the woods. A must for these bikes is either a skid plate that covers high on the tank (like AXP) or the aluminum replacement fitting and guard that Rottweiler makes. Tank itself is going strong through

I pined for a T7 when they teased it several years back to replace my DR650. Then KTM came out with the 790 R. The T7 suddenly became not much of an upgrade performance wise to my modded DR but the KTM was so much more. I'm approaching 20 K miles on my 2020 and it has been stone reliable. The offroad performance is fantastic and on road it rips for 'only' a 790. No regrets! Only hope it remains reliable for years to come. Continued luck and enjoyment with yours!

I had the KTM 990 and the KTM 690, both great bikes. How ever when I bought my Yamaha T7 I found it just fit. Yep I agree. it is not a high tech race ready bike. But I am almost sixty one and find it suits my needs. I think each bike has its strengths. One should be honest with themselves on their skill level. I have only been riding and racing 46 yrs. I have ridden my T7 on the same trails as My 690 and more trails than the 990

I'm a big big KTM fan, but something a bit overlooked if you are thinking about buying a newer 890 or find a used 790 is that they changed the slip mode between the models. On the 790 when you put it in slip 1 it's about the same as slip 3-4 on the 890. I find riding in sand on my 790 I actually stop and turn the slip completely off but when riding 890s in sand I can keep it on slip 1 and get enough push on the rear. I have a short video on my channel showing me going up a sand hill in 2nd gear with 1 slip on the 790 and you can hear how much the slip is pushing back.

Did you also install a lowering kit on it? Stock form it's about 86cm seat hight which is a lot. Ofc you can have a lower seat which gets you to about 84cm but at your hight prolly is either one leg or the other on the ground on tippy-toes.
@EugeneYunak
@EugeneYunak Месяц назад
well. first anyone with short inseam and experience riding enduro bikes will tell you one foot on the ground is not a problem, so much so that I never use two feet even on low street bikes. after getting comfortable with it, it's just an all around better way to stop, and especially to dab - and it's always better to dab and stay on the pegs than to waddle with your feet offroad. anyway two feet is an impossibility for us short inseam riders in enduro anyways, on pretty much any bike, even with huge suspension compromises. and I found that short CoG and slim seat profile + bike profile are MUCH more important for being able to comfortably use one foot. my GF would struggle on pretty much any mid-weight adv bike, but with my 790r it's really not a problem for her or for me (I also have short inseam). and low seat I find doesn't really help and feels about the same as stock R model seat because it's slightly wider. being comfortable with balance and dabbing makes riding 790r with stock height suspension a pleasure, it gives you confidence and I now never worry about it even though I struggle on pretty much any other mid+ adv bike. only other options are all single-cylinder like 690/500.

The KTM 790/890 is a brilliant design, great suspension and weight distribution. Had the T7 for 8mths, great engine but top heavy, suspension needed alot of work. I would buy the 790 in a heartbeat but the complexity worries me. Reliability has been a concern, camshaft wear notably. This is an adventure bike, if reliability is in question then the concept of real adventure is compromised. The 690 although not as highway capable is now my choice, in the dirt it will be superior to the 790. Great looking bike those graphics really set it off.

hey man just to let you know, 790 never feels lighter than 690. it does sometimes feel almost as light as 690, and that's the great accomplishment, but 690 still trumps it offroad with ease, especially in jumps, stopping distance with limited traction, confidence downhill/uphill etc. in slow riding I feel keeping balance is about equally easy/hard. i would only switch if you want more street comfort. for reference I rode 690 + 1190 and now switched a couple of years ago to 790r and exc500. if I was touring with a passenger i'd keep the big vtwin though.

You mixed up MSC and MTC, rally mode doesn't turn off MTC, it turns off MSC which reduces excessive torque drag (like a slipper clutch). It's MTC that remains active and manually selectable from 1-9, only relocating the rear abs sensor to the front disables MTC completely

@adamhrachowina9119
@adamhrachowina9119 Месяц назад
I had to watch the video again, it's been a year since I posted the comment 😂 Yes switching it off in the menu is meant to disable it, unlike MTC which still has some tiny effect on the bottom setting. I have heard of people complaining that with MSC switched off they still get MSC failure banner pop up after prolonged spinning of the rear wheel whilst the front is stationary. I disabled the MTC and MSC completely along with removing the abs. It's nice now to feel what the rear is doing when changing down hard and easier to back it into a corner as the tyre breaks traction. On the dirt it works way better for me, feels like a proper dirt bike. On the Duke i also don't like the KTM electronic interaction on the track, changing the OEM slipper for an old school simple slipper only assembly works way better. The abs is a liability off road and on the track, in certain circumstances it's nearly caused me to crash and after 40+ years of bikes without it, I was glad when it was gone. I've removed over 55lb in dead weight from my 890, had TTM factory fully rework the suspension. Narrowed the bike 4" with the twin rally tanks and now it really feels like the bike KTM should have brought to the market. Nice vid, I was diggin the blast though the deep sand 😎

Just because information was omitted, don’t assume someone doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Emily is not only a seasoned rider, but also knows bikes inside and out. She grew up around motorcycles, (probably learning how to ride one before walking), competes, and is a professional journalist for a motorcycle magazine. She’s the real deal, not just another “instructor” or influencer selling bikes for commissions.

Excellent story telling :) Reliability of T7 is better than KTM´s, Yamaha motor produced in Japan but maybe not assembled in Japan. Will see how KTM´s reliability is in new 790. April Tuareg has also reliability issues, then again there is not going to be a perfect bike. I agree about height and top heaviness. Will wait for some time before purchasing new model of any bike.

The KTM is a great bike, except...once your camshafts, valves and followers fail at low km you'll struggle to trust it to carry you out in the wilderness. When twice as many services as the owner's manual calls for equals complete head rebuild with nasty cam at 31,000km you can no longer trust it. There are so many cases now its absurd, I wont own another KTM, nor would I suggest anyone deliberately put yourself through having KTM treat you like using their bike for its intended purpose is somehow detrimental to their bike.

@@rangeroadmoto its true the info is arbitrary and not too solid. Some of my research states that the 790 production actually started in China in 2019/2020 and some states that it will start in 2023. That being said they have a history of reliability problems which will only get worse with the move to China. And for $15 to $16 k??? keep me posted. I personally have had very good luck with my Aprilia Tuono in the past and will be getting a 660 Tuareg. I like the intake for the air box being clear up above the steering head, Down in Central America There are many rivers that will swamp a under seat intake.

T7 is bad enginered and the worst is suspension. Any adjustments not change that. Its like with good tv, if you bought good tv, first what you do, you turn off all acceleration setting and image is great. On bad tv you have hope thal all that fancy settings change something but after a few weeks of strugle you know that you have garbage tv. Tenere 700 is all garbage. All thing you have to pay on your own to change and still you have top havy, overheating, bad enginered motorcycle. Very overpriced garbage.
