Mind Over Munch aldi is owned by aldi süd and trader joe’s is owned by aldi nord - the parent companies in germany. these two companies original owners were brothers. now in germany there is a very clear line throughout the country- below that line there are only aldi south and above it are only aldi north stores. the two companies are starting to work together now to reduce costs in germany. so the companies are quiet literally brothers- not really distant cousins 😉

I guess Trader Joe's belongs to Aldi. I live in Germany where Aldi comes from, and here we just get a few products from Trader Joe's. I've been to USA a couple of times and I can't tell which one I like the best because the two supermarkets have totally different concepts. In Germany all the products have their price for 100 gr or kg, so you can compare while buying. Also I find very funny what North Americans consider healthy or organic. Lots of the product from Trader Joe's USA would never ever be allowed to be sold as organic in Germany. Greetings from your Brazilian follower! ❤️

Never been to either one. Closest TJ is 6hrs away and Aldi is 12hrs away. So don't think I will ever shop at either one. But think I will do the spreadsheet for my local stores. Thanks

I'm glad that you really express that people need to look at ingredients and unit pricing. Especially because prices vary so much. Ever I live I have access to several aldi, Walmart's, sprouts and whole foods and from one store to the next their prices are different. I can go to two stores same chain and have Disney different prices.

I absolutely love this video. I am a special education teacher and teaching students about price comparison shopping can be challenging, but with videos like this, breaking down not only the better price, but also highlighting the importance of paying attention to package size or quantity, makes teaching this concept much easier. This is my favorite video you've ever made! I'm glad you had fun making it! It would be great if you could make a video comparing vegan meat and cheese replacement. Which store has the best price for beyond meat Kroger or Whole Foods, something like that. Also, when the pandemic is over, you should come down to Texas and do videos like this at HEB! I have a Kroger around the corner and I drive 10 mins away and do most of my shopping at HEB. The best comparison if you've never been there is, if Fiesta is a grocery store for latin american cooking, and H-mart is for Asian cooking, HEB is for Texas cooking.

I love Aldi. I'm in NY and shop there weekly... but I can tell you all that produce is waaaaaay cheaper by you. Cucumbers are .50 and cilantro is $1 and I paid $1.49 for 1 avocado. Crazy. Another great video!! Thanks

This is really interesting. I think your produce prices at your Aldi were cheaper than my store. All things considered, I will try shopping at Trader Joe's more! It may be a bit more, but seeing the price/ounce and comparing the ingredients at TJ's was an eye opener! Thanks so much for doing this.

When I use to live near an aldi, I always bought produce and not many shelf items. At trader joes, i never buy produce but mostly freezer and shelf items. My local Target also has great prices, especially with coupons in the app. I think for me it comes down to quality and convenience. Love these comparison videos! It just makes me miss Aldi! 😣

cassienicole333 the aldi produce that I used to buy did not last 2 days in the fridge and always looked kinda wilted and sad. Unlike Trader Joe’s. Their produce is so fresh and even in some stuff cheaper than aldi. For example, the organic bag of Spanish is $3.49 at aldi while its 2.29 at Trader Joes in my area. For me, it’s not worth it to buy stuff from aldi as I used to threw them after a day. And there is a lot of talk that they get the worst produce while places like Costco get the best.

This takes me back to a junior high assignment many years ago comparing prices between Acme, A&P and ShopRite supermarkets. Currently I shop at both ALDI and Trader Joes with TJ's being the primary because of quality and the fact that so many items come and go from ALDI. I will try anything at ALDI's at least once because some items are surprisingly good but I have learned that the with the dried fruits and the nuts you are getting what you pay for so I now buy those at TJ's. Overall I am happy to have the option of going to both stores on the regular basis.

I love this, even though my nearest trader joes is 1.25 hours away (making it effectively only a good place to stock up on random snacks on the rare occasion I get there!). One thing I will say is the price of produce at Aldi varies drastically week to week- I suspect the cheapest things you found were just on a super good sale that week! Do you have fresh thyme in your area? I'd love to see them compared to Aldi! I feel like the produce is comparable to Aldi prices, but suspect everything else is more expensive (but haven't taken the time to number crunch!)

That nyc aldi is my aldi! eyyyy! lol love that place. so in nyc - the prices for produce are much closer to TJs but still cheaper. also, you mentioned, price per ounce is KEY, thank you for highlighting that! the pantry items folks have to watch out for because the packaging can be deceiving

We don’t really have any Aldi’s near me either. We have a similar store though, Grocery Outlet. Which is a store that gets discounted products that are either out of season, discontinued brands/sizes/flavors, or are overstock from local stores, warehouses, companies, or farms. It is totally different every week.

I feel like this is good for established individuals, with families or not. But for students or other who have a more fluctuating life situation the bigger pacages might just lead to waste, so it might just be better to buy the smaller, cheeper option to reduse waste

Trader Joe's has such yummy snacks. I grab some frozen items for quick dinners (fried rice/orange chicken) .. Aldi on the other hand.. I walk in with 2 bags and walk out with a super awesome variety of veggies and fruits. I noticed trader joes was pricey but didn't realize about the smaller packages at Aldi. Would love to have a TJ here in Germany where I live! Aldi Nord stores are not as nice and fun and Creative as those TJs in the US are! When I have the chance I shop at my Aldi Süd, the quality is way better and selection is also much larger there!

I love both stores but Aldi is 5min from me TJ 45min. I have made special trips to TJ for things I cant find in regular stores but I mainly shop at Aldi/Kroger/Sams as they close by & have what I need. Interesting research! Thanks for all the hard work you put into this video!

The TJs isn't as close as the Aldi, so I usually shop there. We do get meat at Sam's club a lot though bc like you said, quality. And wow, thanks for the time you out in to this video! What a thorough comparison!!!

Excellent research! I’m a Trader Joe’s gal all the way! We recently got an Aldi in our area, but I just wasn’t impressed by the organic selection and overall quality. I know Aldi works well for a lot of people and I’m grateful for the service and budget options they provide to many.

Wow, talk about in-depth. I would have to say for me because I have both close to me, I would still go to Trader Joe's. It partially has to do with additives and food dyes. I buy very specific items from Trader Joe's - mainly snack foods for my kids because one of them cannot do high fructose corn syrup and food dyes. Most of my shopping is done at Kroger, but for snack foods and certain candy items is Trader Joes.

This is exactly what I was starting to research and low and behold you already had done the work and recently, too. 👍 I prefer TJ's for all natural pantry items and quality meats, but I go for the cheap produce and dairy at Aldi. I wish Aldi in N. America carried the European products that have better ingredients.

Trader Joes ❤, but Aldi is closer to our home so we usually go there 🤷 I appreciate the fact that both stores have a small footprint. I loathe walking thru mega stores (Wal-Mart, Costco, even Target *gasp), so overwhelming and tiring.

I agree with you totally. Usually I pick Aldi for produce and dairy and sometimes frozen. But Trader Joe's IS better for nuts and pantry items. I have the opposite problem as you, Aldi is close to me and Trader Joe's is half an hour away. When I was working before the furlough, there was a Trader Joe's near my job so I'd stock up at that one. The specialty items in the freezer section at Trader Joe's can't be beat for variety and quality of ingredients.

Thank you for taking the time to make this video! It was very helpful and clearly took so much effort! While we see Aldi is technically cheaper, I still prefer Trader Joe’s. I’ve never purchased something I disliked from Trader Joe’s and the ingredients are often very clean. I’m willing to pay more for quality ingredients and great customer service. The employees at Trader Joe’s are so friendly and helpful. Can’t say the same about Aldi.

Our Aldi here is a little ghetto so I prefer to go to lidl if I want to go cheap if I miss the farmers market. I'll go to the local grocery if I'm feeling lazy or need something quick, it's five minutes away.

I go to trader Joe's more because I work there. Before I knew about TJ, I was closer to an aldi so I went there a lot. Now I have to go out my way to go to aldi since I work at a grocery store so I just buy stuff there

Two German brothers founded Aldi Nord (North) and Aldi Süd (South) in Germany. Trader Joe's in the US belongs to Aldi Nord. Which Aldi is near you depends on where you live in Germany. There are some cities (along the so called "Aldi equator") where you will find both stores. I live in the North so I can only buy at Aldi Nord. For just a couple of years now I've found more and more Trader Joe's products in their stores.

Aldi over here in Australia is really good, Espeically for fresh produce, i find brocollini will be 3 dollars a bunch at other supermarkets and 1.70 for the same thing at aldi Aldi over here also sell alot of the same brands as our other shops but at a cheaper price (for example dips at aldi will be 2 dollars and 5 at other shops) Our tinned prices at aldi are also cheaper overall, even for size, and our organic range is really good!!

I like TJ for chocolate chips they are very high quality! I don’t like the cake/ muffin mixes at ALDI, and have found the chicken to be plumped up with water

I live closer to Aldi, so I'm more likely to shop there, but if I don't like a product or it has ingredients I don't want, I won't buy it, regardless of price. Trader Joe's has some really tasty and unique items like ghost pepper chips! We have so many stores and foods to choose from; it can be a pain to figure out which items are the best priced, the most delicious and the healthiest. I just try to do the best I can!

I always shop at Aldi. I live in too rural of an area for Trader Joe’s to ever consider opening a store here

Dominique'sDay it is the same in the area that I live in. The closest Trader Joe’s is in Chicago and that’s over an hour away.

My Local ALDI (SoCAL) usually has 3 egg options: - Organic cage free - Organic Free Range - other ones But during this lockdown, they only have the "other" ones... But Target's Grocery has been good here👍

Our Aldi in Lancaster, pa there are organic eggs. I go there first and don't even spend all my foodstamps there. Whatever I couldn't find, I go then to Giant. No Trader Joe's here. I've found some good items that aren't groceries at Aldi. A good storage container for my coats and jackets. Which at other places would have cost more. Thanks for the comparisons .
