Freddie Hubbard’s 19-chorus solo on his blues Birdlike is a tour de force that has been transcribed by many aspiring jazz trumpet players. In this video, the third in a sequence on solo transcription, I envision what it might have been like to trade choruses with one of the greatest trumpet players of all time (who was in his early 20s at the time of this recording).
While there is little doubt who would have the upper hand in this situation, the listener is invited to assess the relative merits of me playing transcribed and memorized choruses from the original solo compared to choruses of my own in which I try to retain the spirit of Freddie’s solo without playing his notes. The video delves into the question of whether solo transcription might turn one into a copycat or suppress individuality, and suggests ways in which you can extract additional benefit from the solos you transcribe. (As an aside, it’s a bit bizarre to see myself playing left-handed…)
ABOUT THIS SERIES
This is the 13th video in the Jazz Tactics series, exploring elements of playing jazz music, especially improvisation, based on my book of the same name and a university course that I’ve taught for over thirty years. The sequential videos in this series will provide a solid foundation of understanding of the principles and practices of jazz improvisation, on both and aural and intellectual levels. Beautiful playing Chase -- your Freddie re-creations are fantastic, but you're own voice inspired by Freddie-isms is artful. this channel continues to be an excellent resources -- fantastic work!

Thanks, Mr. Ali! My intention is not to recreate Freddie (and would be unable to do so), but to use the inspiration I feel when I listen to him. Thanks for the kind words!

I played on tour with Freddie for a month. You are holding your own with him here Chase. But he had so much explosive power-especially on fleugel horn- so I don´t know how you would fare physically. He was a big guy. But you are a master and have done your homework, so I think you would throw him off balance for sure. Big respect Chase!

I appreciate your kind words, but if the comparison was actually between me and Freddie Hubbard (rather than my recreation of his solo), there would be a knockout blow in the first few seconds. Very few trumpet players could place themselves on his level, and certainly not me! I am not trying (nor am I able) to put forth a credible imitation of Freddie. But I find it interesting to compare the effect of improvising vs. playing something that has been memorized, and the degree to which the internalization of his solo impacts my own.

Thankful to be around in a time where such high quality info is being made available on RU-vid. Even when I began my under grad in 2016 this type of info was scarce online. Thank you chase

Hi, Chase-- Thank you for your great channel! My question has to do with the part of this lesson about trading choruses with your solo transcription. Do you suggest working your way through the solo inserting your own choruses after every one in the transcription? Or, are you choosing just one of the transcription choruses and going back and forth with that one chorus? Thank you! Danny Weiss

Each time I played one of Freddie’s choruses it was a different one from his solo. I honestly don’t remember whether they were in sequence for the purpose of the video, but if I was working on my own I would play along with the solo as it proceeds, possibly trading choruses or just dipping in and out of the solo at various spots and then back to improvisation. This is a good test of how well you have learned the transcription-whether you can jump in at any point and go from there. At some point in the (distant) past I wrote just the first bar of each chorus and played them in random order (not with the recording). One tricky aspect of playing this solo is that at several points he plays a phrase which is similar to but not exactly one he plays in another part of the solo. It’s easy to get off track as a result. Thanks for your question!
