If you look at tests done by Speediagnostix, at least the original BMW 0W20 oil from about 2017 is a little bit different from another oil tested that should be a little bit comparable. Compare the amount of friction reducer and anti wear additives! So if BMW itself uses original BMW oil, maybe it can last 30,000 km/18,000 miles, but note 24 months. Many suggest once a year and 10-13,000 km/6,000-8,000 miles, which I try to follow. Is the BMW oil exactly the same as some other marque oil manufacturer? I don't know, it may not be that way nowadays, because anyone can demand any amount of any additive to be used in their oil. Nowadays "everyone" knows which additives must be used and which to avoid, and they also know quite well what it means when a certain amount of a certain additive is used. I think, I could mix two different oils in my 30d engine. Out of 6.5 litre, I could use 5 litre of a "cheap" 5W30 oil, and add 1.5 litre of some interesting "racing oil" which contents and add "interesting" additives that the cheap oil lacks. Can Red Bull make their own mixture, then I can do the same... 😁😁😁

@@leiflillandt1488I don’t think the 0w20 oils are widely used by BMW Dealers in the UK. BMW Assist carry 0w30 BMW branded LL04 And even though my car can use 0w20 LL17FE+ no BMW Dealer has ever used it. It has always had 0w30 LL04 When I do my interim oil and filter changes I use 5w40 LL04 If an oil meets the BMW specs then it’s a high quality oil meeting a difficult to meet spec So making up your own Frankenstein Oil Brew is pointless. You can simply run the oil that is used in Europe rather than 0w20 which seems to be the only oil specced by BMW USA

Always amazes me how some people can abuse an engine and still keep it running, knocking, burning oil, no oil pressure, one that sticks in my mind, it was an Audi 80 or 100, I was young and never noticed, it was nice, but the guy never looked after it, one day it went bang in a big way, but was still running, rough but running, he ran it until the MOT was due, took the head off, found a rod had snapped, the piston jammed in the bore, it was a 5 cylinder, and he ran it on 4 for months, it could have dropped into the crankshaft at any time, but stayed stuck, sound crap but he just drove it into the ground.

@George Austers - George can you measure the distance from the inner back wall (oil pump sprocket face) of the Sump, to the centre point of the Pickup ttube, and the diameter of the pickup tube head at its biggest point and provide the dimensions? I bieve that despite the failure of the guides, this could have been avoided IF the pickup tube had some protection (like a small cage or metal net surrounding the pickup) then even with the guides failing, the oil starvation could be avoided. Given how many engines fails due to guides, and in this case even shortly after a chain replacement, I think it's worth looking into making a safety net that can easily be fitted to the pickup before reassembly. This will add a layer of protection by ensuring the pickup doesn't get blocked. I can come up with a concept but without a spare sump and oil pump assembly it's difficult to speculate on dimensions.

Lack of oil change, sludged up oil starvation definitely did it, add on top the restrictions in the pick up; I would check the turbo too, turbo is the first thing to go when they start to starve. You need to check the main bearing, all the load would be at the bottom (which it is possible to replace, but not ideal): you need to messure the front and back of each main bearing race to see if it is still cylindrical or conical on each bearing race with a Dial Bore Indicator at three different areas, front and back of the race for each main bearing without the bearing installed. if they're within spec, just replace the bearings and crankshaft

You should invest into an engine level. I'm sure you've seen them before. It's a steel beam that has an attachment at the top to go onto your engine hoist. Hanging off each side is a chain. In the middle it has what appears to be a long screw. There is a handle at one end and there is a handle at one end and there is a handle at one end and you can turn that handle to lower the engine downwards or have it tilt back. They are very inexpensive and a good part is it would give you that little bit more of getting into the engine compartment of your car. It also helps to point it in the right direction as you are guided it in there. As long as you take care of it it will last a lifetime. Mine is over 40 years old and they still make them the same way today. As far as the engine I would clean up what you got take it to a machine shop and get their opinion on it. If it's worth saving they can do the work and tell you ahead of time what it will cost. Looking forward to your next video.

Hi George! Wow - absolutely not expecting that sludge! Really jolted me awake at 1am when I "have a moment"! Looks like whom you bought the vehicle off - same old lies about "how they loved their car" as "Project KFC all replaced". My suggestion - talk to breakers within 100-200mi radius or so, pick a viable replacement engine with a 2.0 control unit - an instant upgrade in power already that makes this story worthwhile (DO make sure you replace valve cover, oil filter assembly seal, timing chain n guides, clutch, rear main seal, possibly dual-mass flywheel in ANY case, and, while you're at it - the "sponsored" starter - but who am I preaching to)! A new turbo if in budget would be the "guarantee" that you're seeking, maybe you can get the DPF rinsed professionally, in all then you should have a great, reliable car that will fetch some value should you decide to sell (I'd rather let "KFC" go, own the F30 4pot Diesel myself so - biased!) - Cheers from Connecticut! - Chris

Don’t be fooled thinking it’s just the lower end replacement; with such extensive damage/oil neglect, the turbo has probably taken a hit too, with at least 1 free play piston it might have hammered the head too (bent/invisible cracks), and there’s that timing belt job which raises some questions if properly done. Was oil neglect the single root cause? Did you check oil breather etc…upon proper inspection of all this there might be very little you can salvage or trust after rebuild.

It's a poorly maintained engine with (probably) a poor quality aftermarket timing chain kit fitted which has failed, perhaps due to the fact it was all sludged up already. As I said in a previous video, if it was a "special" car for some reason then it would be good to keep something of the original engine but this is a complete bucket job in my opinion. It's not worth trying to keep the head or cams or pistons or anything, because what's the point? Best bet IMO is to get a low to average mileage engine from a crashed car, and depending on the mileage, maybe give it a new timing chain and clutch and whatever else you think it needs. Maybe take off a bearing cap or two if you really want to, but I think just dropping the sump or taking off the rocker cover will tell you what you need to know. If you can get a warranty then great but not essential IMO. Most warranties have so many exclusion that they are pretty much worthless anyway. Thanks for taking time to reveal the root cause even though many of us already knew it was going to be pretty bad. I think you knew too most likely but good viewing anyway. :)

Horrible engine George. Absolutely smacks of long term neglect. Autodoc get some quite bad press, I've been going to give them a try a few times now, but have always found a better deal elsewhere for what I've needed. For my money, a good second-hand engine would be the way to go, the only caveat being the time implication. Because cars in general are written off and scrapped for relatively little nowadays, somewhere there is going to be a well cared for engine in a scrap car, it's just how long it takes to come up and find. I may be wrong because I have not looked into buying one of those engines that's been properly re-conditioned, but it would probably destroy the financial numbers for the car. I thought it was your idea to flip it for a profit on the way to the next car, in which case you can only look at the cheapest way to get it running and sold on. Tough one George.

Hi George, I have commented before on the N47 engine and the troubles I have had having to rebuild the engine after a timing chain guide fail which blocked up the oil pickup. When I had it happen it put the car into limp mode, I had the red CEL (I think) and a red oil light come up, fortunately it didn't starve the engine of too much oil to cause serious damage and it is still going strong over 3 years on, however the previous owner would have probably figured something was wrong if they had the same symptoms that I had. I would try to get a low mileage engine from a breakers yard if you have a decent one near you then strip it down and rebuild it, best of luck though, hopefully this will be an interesting series to watch!

I’d buy a known running engine, strip clean check, replace chain etc and sell on if your not keeping it, maybe clean and sell the head etc off yours, first I’d way up costs, obviously you will get content out of that, to buy a fully reconditioned and fit is easier but little content and high cost, need to way up projects and content 🤷🏼‍♂️

I'd stay AWay from anything "reconditioned". if you have the ability and the tools, do it yourself. But also if it was me I wouldn't be stripping down another engine I'd just get a new crank, replace the bearings and clean the engine properly.

@@GeorgeAusters Go crazy! You could temporary drive 130 as a daily :P No seriously - how about buying just the bottom of the engine or one with broken head like after chain snapping? Woudn't that be cheaper and quicker? As you''ve said top is salvageable (or i think you did say that.... to many beers) Well. All the best as always mate. Good luck! EDIT: Just found one for 300gbp on ebay. Chain snapped - 100k miles. So yeah, these exists.
